UPDATE: The Dnepropetrovsk Maniacs – Igor Suprunyuck, Viktor Sayenko and Alexander Hanzha
On February 11, 2009, the court in Dnepropetrovsk found Igor Suprunyuck and Viktor Sayenko guilty of premeditated murder and sentenced both to life imprisonment. They were also found guilty of robbery and sentenced to fifteen years in prison. Alexander Hanzha, who was not involved in the killings, was found guilty of robbery and sentenced to nine years in prison. Hanzha said of Suprunyuck and Sayenko: “If I had known the atrocities that they were capable of committing, I would have not gone near them at gunpoint.” The judge stated in the verdict that the crimes had been committed so that the youths “could prove themselves and overcome their fear of people.”
The court’s verdict was several hundred pages long and was read out over a period of two days. The lawyers for Suprunyuck and Sayenko announced their intention to appeal, saying that the authenticity of the photographic and video evidence had not been established beyond reasonable doubt. The claim was dismissed by Edmund Saakian, a lawyer for one of the victims’ families, who commented: “In theory a photo can be faked, but to fake a forty minute video would require a studio and a whole year.” Larissa Dovgal, a representative of the victims’ families, claimed that other perpetrators involved in the crimes could still be at large.
The parents of Igor Suprunyuck and Viktor Sayenko repeated their belief in the innocence of their sons. Vladimir Suprunyuck claimed that Igor had been tortured in order to extract his confession, with the police covering his head and forcing him to inhale cigarette smoke. Speaking at a televised press conference, Vladimir Suprunyuck cited irregularities during the investigation, and said that the case against his son was false. Igor Sayenko claimed that his son had been made a scapegoat, and that the crimes had been committed by the relatives of senior officials. The parents plan to appeal to the Ukrainian Supreme Court and the European Court of Justice. The parents of Suprunyuck and Sayenko also argued that the sentence on Alexander Hanzha had been too lenient. An opinion poll conducted in Dnepropetrovsk found that 50.3% of people believed that the sentence was fair, and 48.6% believed that the sentence should have been more severe.

So there’s finally a resolution to this disturbing case. The two ringleaders, Suprunyuck and Sayenko, were convicted of 21 counts of murder; Murders that occurred during June and July of 2007. We wrote them up in December of 2008 – if you would like to review the case, click here. What made the crimes all the more depraved was not only the extreme cruelty of the two perpetrators, but their total lack of remorse that bordered on a complete inability to feel anything human. Because I saw nothing. No sorrow, no pain – no soul. Igor Suprunyuck and Viktor Sayenko may be the closest things to real demons to walk this earth since the Biblical days.
I’d like to thank Patryk Ostrowski, a young man who I’m guessing comes from around the Poland area. He is the person who informed me of the trial’s outcome, and also needed some clarification on the sentences. Despite the language barrier, we had little trouble expressing our feelings about this case to each other. In his broken English, he told me he didn’t understand why these two assholes didn’t get death. Sadly, I explained to him, for the victims and their families that sort of justice is not available in the Ukraine.

Sweet. I’m actually kind of glad they didnt get the death penalty…seems to easy. They are very young and will spend the rest of their lives in prison to be hopefully tortured or become someone’s bitch!
SO agreed!!! I cant tell you how much this story bothered me. I have watched the video all the way through and i couldnt get it out of my head for weeks!! I wanted them dead and worse than that i wanted them dead by my own hands. I am not a hatefull person and cant even kill an ant! But after watching the video, i felt a rage i have never known!! Justice will never be served no matter what!! The only justice i can see is forcing them to torture and murder their family and friends. i couldnt watch half the video, i think they should be beaten severely with a hammer and a pipe then stabbed in the stomach a couple times with a screwdriver then take a knife cut the hole so its alot bigger then stuff them with salt a sew them shut, or attach jumper cables to the hands and put them in a 25×25 see through glass box and fill it with water and give them no way to rest their arms and tell them “how much pain will you go through to stay alive”

Former Soviet Bloc countries are not really known for their cushy jails. So I think in this case, life in prison is a good punishment. Death by firing squad is too fast and easy for these animals. Sitting in a dank, moldy, rat-infested jail while waiting for their descent to hell? Hell yes.

AS i have done some research on this case, i have found that the third party stopped hanging out with the two boys after the cab robbery. He was not around durring the murders. But who knows! This is just info from a bunch of different internet sites.
He most certainly WAS around during the murders. Somebody was holding the camera and recording everything while Suprunyuck and Sayenko killed the guy in video that was posted here. He knew they murdered people, he did nothing to stop them and did not report them. Here in the US that makes him an “accessory to murder” whether he actually killed anyone or not. He’s just as bad as the other two and should have gotten WAAAAYYYY more than 9 years.
What no one mentioned here is that the “life sentences” they got is a piddly, measly 19 years. Less than one year for each person they killed. They”ll be 40 years old when they’re released, still young enough to go right back to doing what they did before.
I hope everyone who says they’ll never live that long in a Russian prison is right. These shitbags don’t deserve to keep breathing our air, drinking our water and eating food that could be fed to decent good people. They don’t deserve to live another day.

Even though I believe they deserve the death penalty, former Soviet Union prisons are horrendous and worse than death. That would be fine with me as long as their life is a living Hell. These monsters are worse than Charles Manson and Ted Bundy.

there were only two people involved in the killings. there is a common misconception that Alexander Hanzha was the one holding the camera. he was not there. It was only Sayenko and Suprunyck, with one of them always behind the camera.
Hanzha was involved in an armed robbery before the murder spree began.

1. Many of the jews that were massacred in the holocaust were infact polish except at that time it was Prussia. Its name changed with the redistribution of territories (much of Prussia was absorbed by East Germany under the Russian occupation). Poland has produced some wonderful people. Although I’m not religous, pope John Paul II was a kind and compassionate man.
2. No where do I see you reference Nazi Germany in any of your remarks regarding or eluding to the holocaust. Still no reason to tar all Germans with the brush of evil..
3. The shitbricks in this case are Ukrainian and not Russian. The only connection this case has with Russia is that Both countries were major member states in the U.S.S.R.
4. There are good and bad people in all nationalities, races, genders, sexualities, religions, etc. You would be better served seeing people for what they are as individual entities. Judging people as entire groups such as race, religion, etc. is how horrors such as the holocaust happened. It is an ignorant way to view the world.

I agree with everyone else that the third kid was probably taping. It wasn’t like they had the video on auto record and made sure the victims were also in the lens. Someone shot that video and whoever it was got just as much out of this as the other two that killed. You know the really stupid part is that without the video and all of the murders being truly random, it would have been really hard to convict this losers so thank God for their stupidity.

They do say that there are possibly other offenders still at large .. maybe it was someone else holding the camera …. or if it was him the cops couldn’t prove it.
Looking into it a little further it turns out that there were only the two of them on the video .. with one of them operating the camera … they swap the camera when the other comes on.
Mind you reading about what all three of them were doing to animals prior to all this the 3rd guy should burn right alongside the other two.
It was a shame that the infamous video was snubbed at this years academy awards……

Joy S has a point. Russians and Ukrainians have a tendency to brutally torture each other to death for little or no reason. The atrocities committed by Russian soldiers in Chechnya, Afghanistan, WW2, the Civil War, Napoleonic invasion, Time of Troubles etc make these guys look gentle and caring in comparison.

Define a “real reputation”. The overwhelming majority of people associate the NKVD with the purges and internal oppression in the USSR. Since that involved the bulk of their activities, I think that is a fair and reasonable association.
The NKVD contained the regular police force in the USSR, traffic police, firefighters, border guards etc. Anyone could have found a job there.
BTW, the predecessor for the KGB was the GUGB, which was initially put under the umbrella of the NKVD, then separated off in 1941. It is naive and simplistic to claim that the NKVD was “a precursor to the KGB”.

I wish these little punk ass bitches would have gotten the death penalty. I’m sure their age played a part in the reasoning to “spare” their lives. The senseless killings of so many is disturbing. These people were hunted down for no other reason than for these POS’s to get their rocks off. These freaks seemed to kill for the fun and for the pure sport of it. The lives of so many have been affected and ruined by these three clowns. The families of the victims have to live with knowing that these scumbags will get to live out their lives, while their family members are laying in a coffin. I hear the prisons over there are pretty brutal, this would be perfectly fitting if these 3 SOB’s were abused and defiled in the same cold and calculated manner that they perpetrated upon their victims.
Also, the torturing and killing of the animals is just as disturbing. They hung a disemboweled dog up and made a Hitler style mustache out of the dogs blood on one of their upper lips so they could pose for a picture. They carved things into the animals. They tortured a kitten by nailing it to a cross and put duct tape in it’s mouth to muffle the poor little things screams. Give me a few minutes alone with these 3 pieces of garbage and I’ll be sure to get some justice for all of their human and animal victims.

What honestly makes them tick? Lesser sensitivities. They probably haven’t “mystified” the concepts of blood, pain to others, and probably never developed a system of sympathy nor empathy.
What I mean by “mystified” is that peoples (yes, peopleS) tend to hang different culturally acceptable reactions onto certain ideas or concepts, pending the society in which they live. In America, things like puppies will tend to evoke the “cute” response, while the elderly tend to evoke the “sympathy” or “familial love” response; this same elderly response would be magnified several times over in a culture such as Japan, given their attitude and respect-system designed to care for them.
But these kids? Nah. No taboos. No immaterial lashings to keep them restrained. It never came down to “is this right?” It came down to “Do I want to?” They were desensitized to the idea of blood and pain and being the force behind that pain. These are among the most dangerous sorts of people imagineable; they simply don’t think like the majority of society, at least in most areas (They showed themselves being disrespectful to the graves of their victims, so they probably got a rush of some sort or a feeling of superiority off of that — at least that can be understood).
The scary part though? They know how society thinks. And they’re damn good at imitating it. There’s no psychosis behind it… it’s just differing perspectives. Any reactions they might have had were thoroughly reduced during their practice runs with animals.

Are you sure? Even if you could undo that fact that you saw the movie, you couldn’t undo what these boys did. However inhuman and apalling their actions are (and they are very appalling, considering I almost puked after watching this movie despite my awesomeness), ignoring them will serve no purpose save to ensure these callous human beings can go about doing this stuff again. Now that we know it is out there, we might take precautions – even if this just means not hitching rides from teenagers in backwater countries or rectifying any beliefs we might have that such events can never transpire.

In Ukraine a life sentence equals 15 years regardless of the crime. If the perpetrator is aged 21 above, the sentence might be extended, but since the criminals were 19 years old, they’ll serve 15 years after which their case and punishment will be reevaluated.

I am originally from Dnepropetrovsk myself, have been living in EU for the past 10 years though. I am truly horrified by what had happened, I know the places mentioned in the news reports… I have no words right now… I am ashamed that this scum was able to walk though my city and speak my language! Ukraine does not have capital punishment, but I assure you, life in prison means life in prison, no parole. Will serve them right! On the other hand, they will be dead within 2 years, the third one too.
The reports about alleged Russian and Ukrainian cruelty are BS and quite hurtfull I may add.

I remember hearing about this a while ago and seeing a video of one of the murders captured on one of the perp’s cell phones. The video was used in trial as evidence. It was posted on some “Faces of Death” type site. I could barely watch it but my morbid curiosity got the best of me. It was top 5 most sickening things I’ve ever seen, no doubt.
A homeless man is lying on the side of the road behind bushes, while one records, the other beats him in the face with a machete until his face is covered in blood. You can hear the thud from each merciless blow. The man starts breathing very shallowly and making gurgling noises. His face and skull are cut to ribbons and he is regurgitating blood. While still alive, one of the teens takes a screwdriver and jabs it into the man’s brain, which is exposed from the beating. All the while, they are smoking cigarettes and making normal chit-chat in their Ukranian tongue.
From what I’ve learned, the boys used to practice on animals their torture and killings before they moved on to humans, even hanging dogs from trees and posing for pictures.

Yeah Jeremy, I actually link to that video in the story. I didn’t want to embed it because it was so intensely graphic that I wanted to be able to warn people before they decided to watch it. I also didn’t want a little child clicking on it by mistake. I even put it to a vote on whether we even leave the link up – it squeaked through by a couple of votes.
I’m a firm believer in making relevant graphically violent material available to anyone who wants to see it. Life can be ugly sometimes, and it’s important that we see what creeps like these kids put their victims through. However, I also want it to be an informed decision, so I’m more likely to store the graphic images off site and link to them, and warn people in advance what they’re going to see. We’re here to inform, not to shock.
I really feel deeply sorry for all the victims and their families. It upsets me that there is no real justice to be served and the demons are able to live on in prison with Alexander Hanzha serving only 9 years to be released. I think anybody who tried to help these 3 demons to be released or claim their innocence are just as guilty as the demons who commits the crimes. I hope that the 21 victims shall rest in peace.

I won’t say how bad the video is or how it made me feel etc as many have and I’m sure we all get the point on how disturbing and sick the video is. What is even more alarming is how normal everyday people who would never “dream” of committing such crimes have openly said that they would “love” the opportunity to “do to them, what they did to others”. It’s not the content of the video in terms of gore that got to me, to be fair the beheading videos and the face split viral, (guy jumps off a cliff and splits his face in half and is still breathing- the one where you can see his tongue flapping around through his open throat??) but the little details, that make this so sad and make it cut right through people’s hearts the way it does.
