Israel Weingarten, the Rabbi accused om raping and molesting his daughter over a period of a decade was found guilty of transporting the victim to Belgium, Israel and New York to commit sex crimes against her.
Weingarten showed no emotion and the verdict was read, but did complain to the judge that he did not have time to prepare for the trial.
The jury deliberated for just a day before coming to a decision. Weingarten now faces up to fifty years in Federal prison when sentenced by Judge John Gleeson on April 3rd, 2009.

ORIGINAL STORY
This is Rabbi Israel Weingarten. He was supposed to be a man of God – a teacher, spiritual adviser and a leader in the Ultra Orthodox Hassidic community of Sat Mar. Instead, Rabbi Israel Weingarten was a bully, a child abuser, and a pedophile. From this point forward, I’m going to drop the “Rabbi” from his name in my write up, because he has given up his right to wear such an honorable title.
What Weingarten did was travel between England, Belgium, Israel and the United States with his daughter, sexually assaulting her at his leisure, and leaving a community at the first sign that people were becoming suspicious of his relationship with the young girl. For example Weingarten left the Sat Mar community in Belgium in 1997 because he feared that community leaders there suspected him of abusing his daughter and would report him.
The feds say that in 2003, when Weingarten lived in Kiryas Joel, he and some of his friends “forcibly removed the Kiryas Joel public safety director from the Weingarten home when he attempted to investigate a tip that one of Weingarten’s daughters (not the sexual-abuse victim) was screaming in pain.”
Court papers also say that when Weingarten’s sister-in-law filed assault charges against him in 2002, “she received threatening phone calls telling her that she would be arrested unless she dropped the charges.” The papers also say he branded his accuser a “fantasizer,” so that her complaints would be taken as childish fantasies.
The abuse ended in 1999, when the daughter was 18. She had been going to school in London and refused to leave England to return home during the holidays. Weingarten attempted to kidnap her from a family which was trying to protect her. During the attempted kidnapping Weingarten forced his way into the home of the head rabbi of the school and assaulted the rabbi and his wife.
Afterwards the daughter fully broke from her family and from the Sat Mar community. She reported her father’s abuse to the FBI in 2003. It was a long, complicated and difficult investigation, and it was nearly four years before prosecutors were ready to put the hammer down on Izzy Weingarten.
On October 3rd, 2008, FBI agents went to arrest Israel Weingarten, 58, at his Monsey, New York home on a Federal Grand Jury indictment charging him with five federal counts, accusing him of traveling around the world to have sex with the minor and avoid being charged.
The actual arrest turned out to be more difficult than they thought it would be, because Izzy decided to barricade himself inside his house, and refused to come out. FBI agents finally forced their way in, searched the home, and found Weingarten hiding in his bedroom. Since he’s considered a very serious flight risk, he’s being held without bail.
On Monday, March 1st, 2009, Israel Weingarten’s trial began in Brooklyn Federal Court in New York City. After 6 years, his daughter, who had changed her name, finally faced the father who had sexually assaulter her for most of her life. She testified about the first time Weingarten molested her:
“The family was all in the kitchen while my mother was heating up some chicken soup, and my father called me into a bedroom and assaulted me.”
She told the court from that day on, her father abused her in their homes in NY and Belgium. She said she was even abused during a trip to Brooklyn when Weingarten’s father was on his deathbed.
“My father abused me that very night,” she sobbed.
“I asked him, how could he have the heart to do that when his father is passing?”
Weingarten, who is acting as his own attorney, exposed himself as an arrogant, cruel bully during the crossexamination of his daughter. He hollered at her, scolded her, interrupted her in mid question and repeatedly caused her to break into tears, until Judge John Gleason finally exploded in anger.
“Mr. Weingarten, if anybody is going to admonish the witness it’s going to be me,” he thundered. “You have created a fairly untenable, horrific situation by deciding to represent yourself. “Now, I’m not sure where this crossexamination is going, but I know you are not going to lecture this witness.”
Weingarten asked his daughter details of Jewish law, whether a window was open or shut, and the floor plan of a home in Belgium where he is accused of abusing her years ago. “You had me there every day, naked, I did not notice if the window was open or not,” she shot back. “I was kept by you in the bedroom, naked all the time.”
This mental haranguing went on for thee days, but at no point did the victim story waiver one iota.
Izzy’s son also testified for his sister against his father. Yoineson Weingarten testified that his father tried to manipulate him into making false statements that he was having sex with his sister.
“I know about things between you and your sister and I want you to record that for your mom,” Yoineson said his father told him.
Yoineson said his father repeatedly pressured him to help clear his name, even though he suspected that his father was having an improper relationship with his sister.
“It was not clear at the time, with your brainwashing, who to believe, you or my sister. You terrorized my life,” Yoineson said to his father as he was cross-examining him.
Faige Weingarten, testified that she found her ex-husband in her daughter’s bed one night when she was 16.
Faige recalled a Friday night when she had gotten into an argument with her ex-husband while they were living in Belgium, and she had slept in a different room. She said she heard their infant child crying so she went to the bedroom, where she found her then-husband in bed with their then-16-year old daughter.
Faige, who waived her spousal privilege, told the judge yesterday that her then-husband said to her, “look, we are dressed,” but she said the covers were half way down and she saw that the middle of his body was naked.
Faige said a few days later her daughter told her that her father had sodomized her. “She became disgusted for the rest of her life, he made her life disgusting,” she told the judge.
The trial is continuing,, and PYSIH is following the proceedings closely and will update this story as soon the verdict is read.

This is the kind of stuff that really gets to me. Think about living your entire life with your Father doing that, someone who is meant to be there for you – protect his little girl. Instead, he sodomizes her?! I’ve never had a Father, I bet this girl wishes she didn’t either. All of those years and all of those memories, it’s things that you’ll never forget.

Rape is always terrible. When its against a child it ups the anti. When its done by a parent to their own child, its even worse again. And the religious background just makes it even worse. Im not saying that all men of religion act this way, but those that do, mask their behaviour with their holier than thou bullshit attitude.
This young lady is an inspiration in that she didnt just break away from the years of abuse and degregation, but also pressed charges and saw the trial through to the end, even when being badgered by her father on the stand.
Going to trial and having to relive the experience is a hard thing to do. You spend all that time while the trial is being prepared trying to mend yourself and get strong, and then you have to sit there while some asshole lawyer rips apart every aspect of your life.
But women like this show others who are living with abuse that you can break away and take a stand.

I grew up in a severly abusive household and yet i hold no animosity against my mother for not leaving and giving us a better life.
I saw first hand the methods my father used to keep her scared and ‘in her place.’ And none of them were pleasant.
So i do understand how abuse works and i think your probably right about the mother also being abused….but somethings you dont just turn a blind eye to. Your child being raped is one of them.
One thing you have to understand about the mother before you condemn her. We’re talking about an 1000′s of years old Ultra-Orthodox Hassidic community where woman are not even allowed to worship in the same part of the Synagogue as the men. They are subservient to the men in every way. Televisions, radios, magazines and books are forbidden. They have their own law and almost always handle crimes, except murder, and rape if it is every reported. If the mother and daughter wanted to remain part of their community, they would have bad to inform some internal committee, and it basically would have been their word, the word of two woman, to the word of world renowned Rabbi.In the past few years, however, Hassidic women have began to report crimes like this to the police and the wall of silence about sex abuse is slowly lifting
I get what you are saying, Max. I guess when I think of a situation, I think of what I would do in that situation. I know, that regardless of any situation that I would be in- I would never allow something like this to hapen to someone I love. Now, I know that the culture that these women were part of is different than mine, and I can’t possibly begin to understand the way they are treated- but not too long ago we had the post with all the Mohammeds that raped and killed the daughter/ niece… Honor killings were a part of their culture, but to me that did not make it okay. Seemed everyone else agreed on that one. To me it is never okay to silently stand by while your daughter is abused. Again, just me, but I’d have packed her up and ran away in the night if that is what it took. Or just killed the fucker. I think it is wonderful that these things are starting to change, and these women are reporting their abuse now. I wish it hadn’t been too late for this girl. I guess it bothers me so much because it happens here all the time- and every one of us is pretty quick to jump on the “Where was the fucking mother, why did she let this go on?” bandwagon, because we all think that under no circumstances, as a mother, do you let this happen to your kiddos. That woman was being abused the entire time her boyfriend was having sex with her 4 year old, and we all ripped her to shreds, because she allowed it to happen. To me there is just no excuse. I don’t see how in this case, culture makes a difference.
Oh, I agree Diana, there is no excuse. But here are things about this Mother that I wasn’t able to include in the story. She was terrorized by Izzy, and physically abused also. When Izzy was in Belgium, one of the Rabbi’s there accused him of having an improper relationship with his daughter. He gave such a smooth speech, (and of course, the girl denied the accusation), that not only did they clear him, they gave him a Fucking Letter Of Innocence. When The mom finally broke away from the family, after the daughter had, she constantly encouraged her daughter to go to police about the things her father did to her.
I just feel we’re all being a little harsh on the mother, and that it’s my fault for not giving her more time in the story to explain her motivation.
Beyond Jewish law, I find it interesting that the mother left after her daughter was out of harms way. I wonder what kind of threats the psycho used – I don’t think the mother made a concious decision to leave her daughter in the hands of a rapist father. There is a lot more to what went on in that household than meets the eye. The constant moving, the monster defending himself, the rape, the control, the Letter of Innocence – all point to a cunning, manipulative psychopath.
Don’t be so quick to condemn the mother. My heart goes out to her and her family. I hope they all continue to have the courage to stand up to this ‘man’ – even in the courtroom, he will stop at nothing to get his own way. For their sanity and peace of mind, he needs to be locked up and even then, they still may not feel safe until he’s dead.
I don’t know, guys. I find it WEIRD that she waited until the daughter left to leave, and then urge the daughter to come forward. That shows me that she is capable of mustering up the courage to take this guy on- so why wait? I mean, Max- I understand about the letter of innocence being overwhelming, but if mom had chosen THEN to come forward, it’s doubtful he’d have gotten that letter. To me, the fact that she left AFTER her daughter, just makes it sound like it was too much of a burden to be there with her husband without her daughter there to distract him. Having said that, as with any case we comment on, I was not there- it just seems strange to me. Regardless of all I’ve said, I agree that they were living with a monster, and imagine that would confuse and terrify anyone.
While I am undecided about any criminal charges with regards to mommy dearest, I feel that she has a moral obligation which she failed. It’s one thingto stick your head in the sand and deny something that is unseen, but once it’s right there in the face, well that should be a call to action.

The Mom, I don’t feel that sorry for. Despite abuse, religious customs, opression, she knew the difference from right and wrong. She knew her filthy husband was raping their child and she did nothing to stop it. She is weak and I personally am annoyed by that as an excuse for allowing deplorable actions like this to take place. Everyone has choices, Mom chose hers.
The daughter is very brave and courageous and I applaud her strength in stepping forward. Obviously, she did not get those traits from her useless Mother.

I totally agree with the Mom thing being discussed earlier. She KNEW it was going on and left her kids with him. Nothing should have stopped her from leaving and taking her children. If more women would stand up to their abusers and LEAVE and take the kids with them..we would have a lot less innocent children abused and killed. thats why i dont buy this story so easily. this whole story happened after a bitter divorce, so it might easily be a family feud that caused the daughter and mother to come forward. i did not hear or see any independent proof and i think the mom daughter team is lying!!!!!

A lot of the Rabbi’s supporters are using using the divorce to say that the Rapes are just something the mother put the daughter up to, but there’s plenty of evidence from Belgium, when the mother wasn’t even present, and when the girl was young, before there was any talk of divorce, to make that theory worthless – The Feds certainly think it has no merit.

Yes Mazzi be glad your daughter decided not to go to Kettering. It is a good school but it is located on the north side of Flint which is the WORST part of the city. My friend lived near Chevrolet and Welch not 5 minutes from Kettering and his house got shot up last summer. I also happened to be in Genesee county jail with Odette on floor 4AB (the roughest floor in the whole jail it is called by some the fighting floor) and saw Odette get his ass beat by 6 inmates at the same time, they pulled him out of the shower and beat the shit out of him in front of everyone while he was still naked. They sent him to isolation until he rode out to prison. The guards even stuck up for the inmates who beat him up, two of them didn’t even go to the hole (one of whom was one of the victims’ uncle) i just wish they would have killed him it was a beautiful sight seeing this assclown on the floor bloody and beaten though.

Survived Too.. I am sorry that you were used as a pawn in your parents game. I was initially going to say “but at least you weren’t sexually abused” and then I remembered what I wrote in a paper just last week. The physical pain of almost any abuse leaves, but the mental anguish never does. So, because you were not actually abused, your psyche may still be just as hurt.
But, what caused your problems ultimately was not a false accusation, it was a bitter, spiteful mother who was willing to betray you to get back at her ex. Your father on the other hand may have been seriously damaged from the false accusations. I would hope that you were interviewed or that there was physical evidence, because women DO lie about sexual abuse in ugly divorces. That is one reason that some of the scumballs who eventually kill their kids, still have custody or visitation. The law is very aware of this problem (now) including how children can be manipulated into lying about it, and the authorities take this into account.
I feel for you. I truly do. But for the sake of the innocent victims, I would hope that you can let go of your anger and maybe find a way to help innocent fathers when they are wrongfully accused. The only way to get things done is to help, one step at a time, and who knows? Maybe it would help you work through your anger?
