Orange Amir Taylor III
On December 15, 2006, students at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan called campus security to report a foul order permeating from a dorm room in their building. They were right to call. Security found the body of seemingly healthy 22 year old Laura Dickinson dead on the floor of her dorm room. Looks like EMU had a murder to investigate, or did they?
Let me rewind to three days prior. December 12, 2006. Laura was alone in her dorm room when she had a visitor—an unwelcome visitor. That visitor was Orange Amir Taylor III, a fellow EMU student. Mr. Taylor apparently was in the building attending a party he decided he should look for property and drugs to steal. Hey – at least he was honest about being a thief, right? The honorable Mr. Taylor found his way to Laura’s room and proceeded to rape and either strangle or suffocate her. (Prosecutors still aren’t sure of the exact cause of death.) Laura’s keys and entry card had also been stolen, making one believe that her killer had locked her in when he was finished, leaving her to be found at a later date.
When this poor girl’s body was finally found, she was in a demeaning position. Laura was found on the floor, naked from the waist down with a pillow over her face. She also had a blanket and sheet underneath her body, as if it had been pulled off the bed with her. Eastern Michigan University called in the Michigan State Police to help investigate a possible homicide. Now, I don’t know if it’s just me, but when a healthy 22 year old female is found partially naked on her dorm floor with a pillow over her face, possible would be omitted from “possible homicide”.
Eastern Michigan University posted on their website the following day that “…There is no reason to suspect foul play…” In the following days, an incident report showing detailed information about Laura’s dorm room and graphic information about the condition of her body began floating around the Student Affairs Office. Soon after, Student Affairs Vice President, Jim Vick, ordered the document shredded without ever informing University President, Jim Fallon III.
Mr. Wonderful, Orange Taylor was arrested February 23, 2007 for the Murder of Laura Dickinson. Hmmm, murder charges? I thought there was no reason to suspect foul play. Something doesn’t add up there. Smells like a cover-up to me. 10 weeks after the death of Laura, EMU regents retained, Butzel Long, a Detroit Law firm to investigate the situation. Guess they thought something was a little fishy, too. The very people the University hired, sided against them when the investigation was over and done. The law firm found that the university violated the Clery Act, and they would probably be fined later on in the summer by the Department of Education. Mr. Fallon issued an apology soon after this to the community and family of the victim. An apology I certainly would have told him to shove had it been my family member.
A friend of mine attended EMU at the time of the above said apology, and sent me an e-mail containing his heartfelt words:
The entire EMU community was saddened to learn of the death of one of our students on campus this week. We offer our most heartfelt condolences to the student’s family.
You may have seen reports in the media regarding this situation. At the request of the family and out of respect for their privacy, EMU will not release the student’s name or identifying information. EMU’s Department of Public Safety is working closely with the medical examiner’s office to determine the cause and circumstances of death. At this point, there is no reason to suspect foul play. We are fully confident in the safety and security of our campus environment, and our campus officials will remain vigilant in ensuring safety for all members of our campus community.
The day following the long overdue apology, Mr. Fallon resigned after the EMU Advisory Committee approved a “no confidence” resolution over his leadership skills. EMU FINALLY did something right!
Prior to this whole mess, Mr. Taylor wasn’t exactly the perfect resident on campus. He had a prior drug paraphernalia arrest, and had been in some trouble for allowing people into the mess hall via a side door to gain access to free food, which lead to him being restricted to only being on certain parts of campus. Taylor lived on campus until November of 2006, when he moved back to his parents Southfield home, he continued taking classes. Eastern Michigan officials say that Taylor was suspected in the murder, but didn’t want him to flee, but no worries, they had “an eye on him”. What good is an “eye on someone” on a campus full of students who had no idea a murder even took place?
The university was finally fined on the Clery Act Violations in the sum of $357,000. They also settled with Laura’s family for 2.5 million dollars, Robert and Debra Dickinson DID NOT sue EMU; the university settled before that happened. How you can put a price on the life of a beautiful young girl with everything to live for is beyond me.
Orange Taylor went to trial for the first time on October 16, 2007. Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Blaine Longsworth told the court that he would show evidence of fibers from Taylors’ sweatshirt on Laura’s body, as well of his DNA on her inner thigh and a tampon thrown across the room (he had witnesses attest to her cleanliness and the improbability that she would do this herself). Mr. Longsworth also had video evidence of Taylor leaving the building in the early hours of the morning with a bag that Laura had been seen with earlier in the evening. Defense attorney, Alvin Keel, argued that Laura was dead before Taylor entered her room. He used a heart ailment that Laura’s doctors had cleared her of as the cause of death. Taylors’ defense team didn’t deny that his semen was on her, as he admitted he went in the room and masturbated on the dead woman’s body. Well…at least he admits to being into necrophilia *puke*.
Someone must have bought this story, because the jury couldn’t decide on a verdict. This resulted in a hung jury, and Washtenaw County Judge Archie Brown declared a mistrial. He scheduled a new trial, and the waiting continued.
Orange Amir Taylor III went on trial for the final time on March 31, 2008 for the murder of Laura Dickinson. The same evidence was presented, except the prosecution called Laura’s cardiologist to the stand to testify. He confirmed she had been cleared of the arrhythmia she had suffered two years prior and it wasn’t a factor in her death. Things were very different for Mr. Taylor this time around. Who knows if it was all the media attention, or if his luck just ran out, but he was convicted of 1st degree murder, Assault to commit sexual penetration, Home invasion, and Theft on April 7, 2008. Taylor hadn’t spoken publicly until his sentencing on May 8, 2008 when he apologized to his family and Laura’s at the same time, saying they had “endured an emotional roller coaster”. He maintains that the one thing he is not is a murderer, he does; however, admit to “…Doing things that were inappropriate”. Mr. Taylor will be spending the rest of his life in prison, as a guest of the State of Michigan. Laura’s mom’s words were read to the court by Mr. Longsworth:
“Laura was my smiling, compassionate ray of sunshine. You took away the gift god gave us”.
Laura was a transfer student to EMU, just finishing up her first year. She planned on joining the Peace Corps and helping underprivileged children overseas when she graduated. She was a loving daughter and an amazing person adored by her whole community. If Orange Taylor doesn’t deserve to rot in hell for taking such a bright star from this world, I don’t know who does.

Can someone explain to me how someone goes from theft, and drug possession, to rape and murder?? I mean, if you get away with a few relatively minor offences, does that give you the idea that you can just completely abandon morals and compassion, and take what you want from anyone?? I dont understand it.. Then again maybe he did things that no one knows about.. If he doesn’t end up in Hell I certainly hope that prison is Hell on earth for him..

To address your question, and I guess I should have gone into more detail about certain things, but I believe that due to decomposition some evidence was unobtainable. She was left in front of a heat vent in her dorm room for 2 days which sped up her decomp. Sorry I didnt clarify that.

I know this is not a popular sentiment, but there are victims who put themselves in harms way, and then there are totally 100% innocent victims. This poor girl sounds like the latter. She didn’t choose to hang out with a violent guy, she didn’t go to a club and get wasted and bring some loser back, she was in her own room, in college, and this guy invaded her life and destroyed her. And then even left her like a piece of trash. How fucking DARE he?

And the school? Again, if it were my daughter’s school, I would be livid that they tried to cover it up and potentially put my kid (and hundreds more) at risk.

I agree with you Mazzi. This young lady was completely innocent. She had everything going for her and just because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time she is no longer with us.
The way that the school handled it was absolutely despicable. I don’t know how the VP could sleep at night knowing that other students were at risk and doing nothing about it. He probably wasn’t concerned because his children weren’t on campas.

I was some place and a mother kept yelling her child’s name pronounced TI (long I) REZ (like reservation) – I saw the speling “”Tires” was the child’s name. Ummm.. talk about an illiterate bitch – while TI-REZ sounds somewhat OK to me, ummm… find a way to spell it differently enough so people will stop and ask, rather than call the kid “tires”

Here’s a little update on former University President, John Fallon.
He recently sued EMU like the whiny, slimy weasel he is. The basis of his lawsuit? He claimed the regents of the University outted him from his position because they thought he would discuss their “culture of secrecy” publicly, Fallon alleged that the University was using Dickinsons death as a sort of scapegoat.
Thank god the judge saw through his bullshit and threw the case out, and is making him pay his own legal fees….so in total he owes EMU $18,000 and is still a whiny slimy weasel.
What a buttwipe!! The parents should confiscate everything that man owns and he should be forced to live with Mr. Orange here since he wasn’t a threat to anyone on campus.

As far as the Universities in general, they need to stop playing politics and get active in promoting more of a safe enviorment for the students, the true students like this young lady was. They cater all too much to those little assholes like Orange who are there for social reasons, to party it up. One infraction, their asses should be gone. The fact that he was allowed to have roam free with their “eye on him” is unacceptable and a joke in itself. The fact that they tried to pass off her murder as natural causes to save face makes me sicker. This is just sad. So much potential that young girl had, too. It makes me sick.
I agree Poptart. It pisses me off so bad. Orange here was a fuckup. A thief, a druggie – what else? (Besides a murdering rapist?) Why was the school protecting him before the murder? Why was here there at all?
Is it because he is underprivileged? And if he was underprivileged, shouldn’t he, of all people, be expected to act right? It’s one thing to be a fuckup when Mommy and Daddy are footing the bill, but when a student is getting a free education, shouldn’t they be expected to show some gratitude? But regardless of who was paying, why the fuck would a university allow a KNOWN criminal to remain there? Simply tossing him out of the dorm was not good enough. He should have been banned completely from the campus, as should anyone who displays any kind of criminal behavior.

If we want to have credible institutions which cultivate learning and growth, we need to start booting assholes like Orange who are not there for the right reasons. she was clearly a beautiful woman… inside and out. what a tremendous loss to her parents, my heart goes out to them. her plan was to make this world a better place and help underprivileged children overseas… so this man robbed her family and perhaps hundreds of children from what her life had in store for her.
I have several problems with “orange” here
1. He says he say the body and masterbated over it……. hmmmm if she had a heart condition and was not responsive, then CALL someone – the arguement I would make is that she might NOT have been dead at that point. So if he “really” did not kill her, his confessed indifference to her situation is a crime in itself – some type of negligent homocide………..

Another story about a black criminal thug getting the red carpet rolled out for him in the name of diversity. The actual percentage of of crime committed by Black people is much, much lower than 53% you quote, or the 70% the last guy tried to pass off as the truth, or the 0% of rapes committed by white men on Black women, as one genius insisted was the truth.

Thank you for writing this!! I knew Laura personally and she was one of the kindest people you could know. She had such an amazing personality & a boyfriend who loved her tremendously. She was taken from so many people who loved her. I believe WHOLEHEARTEDLY that Orange killed her. How can you not if you look at the evidence?? As a student at EMU at the time of the murder as well, it was such a feeling of betrayal to lose a friend & be told there was so foul play and to learn a few months later that she had been murdered, words cannot express how happy I am that EMU got fined & that the President was fired.
My condolences to you and the rest of Laura’s friends and family. No one deserves what happened to her.
