Timothy Arie Kooyman
Let us all give a rousing PYSIH welcome to Timothy Kooyman (don’t you just love this name) of Rancho Cucamonga, California. Little Timmy likes cats. I mean he REALLY likes cats. He has an extensive history of torturing and killing them. As well as making false bomb threats, history of mental illness, dysfunctional family, etc. but that is another story.
Our little tale begins when Kooyman was first convicted of torturing, mutilating and killing cats in November 2007. When animal control officers responded to Kooyman’s residence on an abuse allegation, he stated that the injuries of the cat were self-inflicted because the cat “hit itself.” Now, lets all picture a little cat punching itself in the face with its little paws, to the point where it’s nose bleeds. Got the mental image? Ok, let’s continue. He was convicted, and placed on probation in April of 2008. He was ordered to undergo counseling and to not have any contact with animals (does anyone really think this works?). Timmy didn’t exactly do what he was told to do (Gomer Pyle says, surprise, surprise, surprise).
In April 2008, right after he was smacked on the wrist, he was again arrested on charges of animal cruelty. It was alleged that he mutilated and killed at least three cats in a motel room in Riverside County, California. When Kooyman was arrested, he told police that he had “broken the cats legs, ran over one with his truck, decapitated another with an ax and after a failed attempt at drowning the third, he cut it repeatedly with a razor.” The motel staff told the police that they had found large quantities of blood and fur in Kooyman’s motel room, including inside the mini-fridge (really don’t want to know about the fridge). Animal control officers removed the bodies of three dead cats from the alley behind the motel room. Kooyman was released after the charges were
dropped. It is unclear as to why the charges were dropped but it was noted that no evidence was preserved from the scene.
On May 13, 2008, sheriff’s deputies responded to a report about a man acting suspiciously (suspicious = crazy). They found Kooyman asleep in his truck. When they questioned him, they found that he was on probation from the conviction of animal cruelty in November 2007. The suspicions of the deputies were highly aroused because of the blood covering Kooyman’s shirt. Kooyman gave permission for the deputies to search his truck. Inside the truck, the deputies found two cats suffering from broken legs and amputated tails. Deputies discovered several bloody towels, and scissors covered in blood and fur.
Because of the condition and injuries of the cats, the deputies believed that Kooyman was responsible for an early incident involving a brush fire, and another cat. It appears that Kooyman doused a living cat with gasoline and threw the animal into some brush, which started a small brush fire. The burned cat had similar injuries to the cats in Kooyman’s truck. Kooyman was taken into custody on suspicion of animal abuse. Unfortunately the injuries that were inflicted upon the cats were so profound that they 
had to be euthanized.
Kooyman later confessed to torturing the cats. He told Detective Alonzo Daniel that he had lured the cats with an open can of cat food. After he had captured them, he broke each of their legs, one by one. He then cut their tails off, stabbed one cat in the eye and slit the throat of the other. Then he threw them, still alive, into a plastic storage tub with the towels and scissors. Kooyman pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Initially, Deputy District Attorney Debbie Ploghaus vowed that she would not consider any form of plea agreement:
“What he did to these animals is sick. I’m concerned he is a danger to society.” (ya think?)
“There’s a difference between being insane and being evil. I think this was just a crime of sheer evilness.”
“He was torturing the animals because he could, I guess.”
But in a reversal of attitude, Ploghaus accepted a plea agreement from Kooyman in April 2009. Kooyman pled “no contest” to four felony charges, three for animal cruelty and one for arson. On May 6, 2009 Judge Michael A. Sachs sentenced Kooyman to five years in prison. He will be eligible for parole in two years as he is being credited for time served while awaiting trial.
At the request of Kooyman’s attorney, Judge Michael A. Sachs recommended Wednesday that Kooyman be housed during his prison term at Salinas Valley Medical Facility State Prison, according to minutes of the hearing. Ploghaus said Kooyman appears to acknowledge he has a problem. She said she hopes Kooyman won’t be a danger to society when released from prison. Maybe if he crosses his heart and hopes to die, he won’t torture any more animals. I think we should all be terrified for when Timmy is released. One of these days, he will move beyond cats.
“He’s not crazy. He’s simply sadistic,” said Leroy Moyer, director of Voices for Pets. “He enjoys inflicting suffering on defenseless victims.”

Editor’s Note: This story made me so angry I was shaking. Like I told Blondie when she submitted it, my wife and I just adopted two kittens, Jimi and Phoebe, making a total of eleven cats that share our house with us now. I would like very much to find Timothy and kick the ever-loving shit out him when he gets out of prison, and I may just go through with it.
Cats are sensitive, gentle animals. They’re selective about who they let into their world, but when they decide to trust a person, the amount of affection and joy they bring into your life can overwhelm you. A lot of people are turned off by their independence, mistaking it for aloofness, but it’s just that independence that makes them so special. They don’t need you to love them, and they don’t need to love you – they want to love and be loved.
Believe me when I say this, if I had seen what Timothy Kooyman was doing to those cats, one of us would have gone to prison that day, and the other would not have walked away. It would have been the same if it was a dog, or a young child – I know what kind of person I am, and the more helpless the victim, the more pissed off I get. I’ve worked very hard over the years to control my temper, but there are times when none of that matters. Tim would have gotten a taste of that other me, and if he thought he had problems before…..

But if you keep the house clean and the animals fed such that no one complains, then who cares?
Because laws are supposed to be applied equally even though the spirit of the law is to go after inequalities, enforcement bears the burden of discretion, If no one complains, then the violation goes unnoticed, while if someone complains due to stench or weird events, then the rule will be enforced.
Unfortunately the law can not say “if the person can not take caer of….” because it’s too big of a gray area.
Like when I was divorced (still am divorced from the first wife :-), money was tight and the cats did not receive shots in a timely manner. Another cat had cancer and the treatments got too expensive, I had to have her put to sleep.
Now things are better, but during that period, someone may have deemed me unfit!
But then again look at the states Child Welfare systems. These systems have a lot of gray area and as a result are absolute disasters – just go deeper into hell here! Bad parents are frequently given many chances while better parents are routinely beat up by the system because they are easy targets!
So it loks like many children may be better off if they were cats!
Ok, let me start off by saying that I REALLY ABHOR CATS. I will not even consider coming into someone’s house if they own a cat, as I am allergic to them also.

Unfortunately, I live in Riverside, CA which is not too far away from Rancho Cucamonga. I obviously don’t own any cats, but I did send this story to everyone I knew who owned one.
It’s too bad that he can’t be locked up for life in order to PREVENT him from ever being able to do these things, God Forbid, to a human being.

Max, my mom and I love that you and your wife have and love your 11 babies. We have 8 and I always said I’d be in jail if anyone hurt my cats because I would kill them myself. Every time I hear about another animal abuser I grab my closest kitty and hug them for a long time.
Actually krystin, we’ve added 4 more kittens since then. Linus is a 7-month-old long-haired orange tabby we took from a family whose little son was very allergic to him. Mick, Sophie and Iggy are all from the same litter. they’re three months old – we were just supposed to hold them for a week or two till they went to permanent homes, but everything fell through. Now we’re too attached to the little ittie bitties to let them go.

What a sicko! I would venture to say he has probably been doing this for years. That’s why he wasn’t worried about getting caught the second time. IMHO, this should be treated the same as if he had done it to a human simply because it is only a matter of time before he moves on to them.

I adopted a tuxedo about a year ago. I remember when we spotted her and she was hesitant, but at the same time, you could see that she wanted to trust someone. She HAD to trust someone because she was near death, scared, abandoned, and starving.
How anyone could hurt an animal in that moment, that moment when they look to you for safety and comfort is beyond me. What a filty excuse for a human. Absolutely unbelievable. He better hope he doesnt run into me somewhere.

It’s obvious that this guy suffers from a severe mental illness. My concern (and I am not diminishing what he did to the helpless cats at all) is that he will evolve and start targeting humans. Specifically, helpless and defenseless humans, like children. I cannot envision him not escalating. Once they get a taste for torture and killing, they cannot stop. He appears to be a true sadist. Whether or not he is insane, legally or medically, is not the issue. The issue is that if there was any human being that was so obviously a threat to society, it’s Timmy.
I agree with you 100%. His behaviour now is just the tip of the iceberg and i doubt this is the last time we hear about Kooyman. He is a dangerous, unstable person.
The saddest thing about this is that he will get out and he will do this again. It’s such a frustrating, helpless feeling to see what is going to play out and continue to play out until this guy is locked up for life or dead. This “person” is severely disturbed and it doesn’t take a genius or a psychologist to tell you that he will eventually move on to bigger prey. Unfortunately there is no way to ensure that he won’t hurt another innocent creature. The only thing prison will do is give him time to think of more ways to inflict torture.

While we as humans have to kill weather to eat or to protect opurselves, killing should never be enjoyed for the act of killing.

I’ll admit right here that I don’t really care that much about cats. In the way that I don’t really care about monkeys or parakeets. They’re animals, okay. I like animals as a class of beings. I’m just not that attached.

What the hell happened to your weird ass that makes you hates cats that bad? Did your parents love the cat more than you? Did a cat beat your ass one day when you were three?

For him it could be as simple as he likes the sound of breaking bones or as complex as his feelings of total control over another living creature. Cats are pretty easy targets, especially domesticated ones. They are small, easily captured and controlled. Probably had nothing to do with them being “cats.”
I believe that animals, like children, should be kept only by people who make the effort to love them, dote upon them, and spoil them. If you can’t do that, then don’t have them.

Torturing animals is sick, sadistic and wrong. I understand hunting and killing for food, but unless he was making some sort of dish out of BBQ cat, he’s just a sick bastard. Now as to why he gets a slap on the wrist, well obviously the law and the judge is behind the times, and believes that this person can be successfully rehabilitated. How many times has that gone wrong, only to have people like us asking 2 or 5 years down the road… “why the fuck didn’t the judge see what a sicko this man was? The depths of evil in people continues to amaze me. Thinking about the confusion, fright and pain those cats must have felt really makes my soul feel dirty. It is such a indicator of the sick state of society now, that someone gets a “slap on the wrist” for crimes like this. Prison time will only twist this creature’s sick perversion even further. These types only graduate up to doing the same to people. When an animal is damaged, it should be put down. One day people will wake up and understand this, until then – the justice we seek for the defenseless is a sad pitiful excuse for the true damage those creatures inflict on society. Pieces of $hit like that do not live under the same conscientious, therefore our laws of punishment need to reflect this which currently they do not.

According to San Bernardino County Superior Court records, when
Kooyman was convicted in April 2008 of a felony animal cruelty charge stemming from a November 2007 incident in Upland, CA; He was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to undergo mental treatment. When a court orders mental treatment it’s because an assessment was made that the individual is indeed mental ill. I wonder if Kooyman ever received mental treatment? Considering his repeated offence, probably not. Judge Michael A. Sachs sentenced Kooyman to five years in prison, but did not order Kooyman to undergo mental treatment. Why not? Maybe Judge Sachs did not order Kooyman to undergo mental treatment because Deputy District Attorney Debbie Ploghaus did not believe Kooyman was mental ill. Remember, Ploghaus would not let him plea not guilty by reason of insanity. Ploghaus stated that, “There’s a difference between being insane and being evil. I think this was just a crime of sheer evilness.” Ploghaus only allowed insanity and evilness as motives for Kooyman’s crimes and not mental illness. Therefore, So Kooyman now goes to prison but does not get treated for his mental illness because he is not insane, just an evil SOB. Wonderful. Kooyman will be eligible for parole in two years and chances are he will be paroled due to over crowding. It’s true that serial killers began torturing animal before people, therefore when Kooyman is released and graduates to torturing and killing people, send Deputy District Attorney Debbie Ploghaus and Judge Michael A. Sachs a “Thank You” card for a job well done!
Thanks for this. I live in a two bedroom place, with two cats. I now feel the need to go to the shelter and pick up a couple more. I mean really? I feel sad for the little bunnies that get attacked at night by our neighborhood fox, those awful squeals. And to do that to a cat? wtf?! The funny thing is, as I was reading this story I was petting my beautiful cat. I couldn’t imagine hurting an animal. They’re innocent and trusting, just like a baby.

My cat went missing in Dec 07, i still cry that she’s gone. This makes me cry, just as I cry for a child that’s been hurt. I dont know why someone would do such a thing, i could curse, yell, beat my computer, but it won’t do a thing. i’m not going to waste my energy on this guy, he will get his turn.

As for Kooyman, where do these people come from? Is there a psycho spaceship that drops them all on earth from time to time? Hello — I just wanted to clarify something that was stated about “charges being dropped” in the Kooyman cat torture cases:
First though, thank you for posting the info about Timothy Kooyman on your web site. As many people as possible need to be informed about this very bad guy…. because he won’t be in prison forever.
I am the volunteer who attended nearly every court hearing in the Kooyman cases since June of 2008, on behalf of the California non-profit organization, Voices for Pets. In your post, you state that Timothy Kooyman was arrested in April of 2008. He was not. He was not arrested until May 13, 2008, for the torturing, burning, and mutilation of three cats taken from neighborhoods in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
Then on May 27, 2008, a Complaint was filed by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office for SIX counts of animal cruelty (six cats), and one count of recklessly causing a fire of a structure or forest (not arson – that is a different charge). However, at a preliminary hearing on July 1, 2008, Kooyman’s Public Defender objected to three of the cruelty counts, because those three counts were for crimes committed out of this court’s jurisdiction. To be more specific: Kooyman admitted to torturing and killing three cats while he was living at motels in the City of Corona, which is located in Riverside County, a neighboring county of San Bernardino County (only about 20 miles from each other). Therefore, since those cats were tortured in a different county, the Judge dismissed them.
Since the San Bernardino County case has now concluded, we are urging people to contact the Riverside County District Attorney’s office, to urge them to file charges against Kooyman for the crimes he committed in that county. (Some of the worst and most gruesome acts were done by Kooyman in Riverside County.) What has not yet been reported, but actually happened also (according to a subsequent San Bernardino County Sheriff’s interview), is that Kooyman also voluntarily confessed to harming a fourth cat in Riverside County. When Kooyman was living at the Crown motel in Corona from April 16-23, 2008, he got himself a small kitten. He told the Sheriff’s Detective that he filled a plastic tub with water, and then he placed the kitten inside the tub and closed the lid. Eventually, the kitten drowned. After the kitten died, Kooyman threw its body in a dumpster behind a business called Miguel’s Jr. on Sixth St. in Corona. PLEASE – write to:

Ask Mr. Pacheco to please press charges (in addition to the drowned kitten) for the calico, the Siamese, and the black and white kitty that Timothy Kooyman confessed to torturing for days in his room at the National Inn motel, allowed them to languish and suffer for days until they died, then threw their bodies in an alley in back of the Walgreens store. (He lived at the National Inn in Corona, CA between April 23 – 30, 2008). The black and white kitty was decapitated with an axe.)

Yeah, there’s only so much satisfaction in killing a kitty – he’ll be moving on to bigger and better things if the courts don’t recognize what this asshat is doing and working up to. This guy is going to need some serious monitoring and medical help if they plan on ever releasing him – and truly, I’d rather he not be released.
I think all of these asshats need to be put on an island and left. No food, no water, no shelter – just them and the other asshats. Let them figure it out for themselves. That might be kinda fun to watch.
Virtually every serial killer ever captured has had the same history of torturing animals before moving on to humans. It’s the single most accurate predictor of whether someone’s a prospective murderer – they enjoy seeing the pain of the animals, and having the control over them. That level of sociopathic sadism has only one direction, and if it’s a “sickness”, there’s only one cure. Being hospitalized and “treated” isn’t it. This one’s botched, and needs to be put down.
