Gayle Muhs And Sheila Muhs
These two beauties are Gayle and Sheila Muhs. Gayle, 45, and Sheila, 45, are VERY protective of their privacy. They put up a sign in front of their property in Liberty County, Texas that reads “Trespassers will be shot. Survivers (sic) will be reshot!! Smile I will.” They mean it, too – They once took a shot at their next door neighbor.
Nice people, the Muhs.
The Coffeys are nice people too. Donald, 36, his wife Becky, and their two children Donald Jr., 7, and Destiny, 5, are described by their neighbors as nice, simple country folk who never bothered anybody and were always there to lend a helping hand. They enjoyed taking their vehicles off road in the woods near their Westlake, TX subdivision.
Friday night, were at the end of a daylong excursion on off-road vehicles through wooded paths along the Trinity River. Donald Coffey Drove a Jeep with his son Donald Jr., a family friend, Patrick Cammack, and Cammack’s son. Patrick Cammack’s wife, Cindy Nelton, drove an SUV along with Becky and Destiny Coffey. An unidentified 11-year-old boy was also with the group.
Around 9:00PM the men stopped to use the bathroom and got out of the Jeep near the Muhses’ home when a woman’s voice boomed through the darkness, Nelton said. Sheila Muhs cussed out the group and told them to get off their property, even though they were on a public road. A shot rang out immediately afterwards as Sheila opened up on them with a 12 gauge shotgun.
“And then I heard a shot and our windows were blown out,” Nelton said.
Nelton, who never saw a shooter, said she immediately stomped on the gas and screamed, “We’ve got kids in this vehicle! Y’all need to stop shooting!”
A second shot, and possibly others, came as Sheila Muhs handed the shotgun to her husband Gayle. Nelton said she sped to safety near a bridge, unaware of the Jeep’s location.
Becky Coffey opened the door to the SUV to go look for her husband and son. When the inside light came on, Destiny was in the back seat screaming.
“She said, ‘Mama, they shot me. Mommy, they shot me.’ There was blood all over her,” Nelton said.
Nelton rushed the girl to a nearby fire station while Becky Coffey frantically searched on foot for her other family members. The victims were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital via air ambulance.
Meanwhile, Sheila Muhs had called 911. Bishop said the woman told a dispatcher: “They’re running over our levee in big-wheel vehicles, and I shot them.” FYI, The Levee belongs to the Westlake subdivision, not the Muhses. Neither does the road that the victims were shot on.
Donald Coffey Jr. was shot in the head and face, and died at the hospital Sunday afternoon. Destiny Coffey and her father, Donald Sr., who were both hit in the shoulder by shotgun pellets, were treated and released.
The Muhses are charged with aggravated assault and are being held in the Liberty County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail each. The couple is expected to appear in state district court in the coming week.
Authorities are expected to upgrade the charge to capital murder, Liberty County Sheriff’s Cpl. Hugh Bishop said.
Liberty County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Ken DeFoor told reporters that the shooting was the most “violent reaction to something so blatantly, blatantly minor” he’s ever seen. He said the families in the two cars had done nothing illegal and they never set foot on the Muhs’ property.
I almost forgot to thank Electra for tipping me off to this story. This is the kind of thing that really get my blood boiling – there’s nothing worse than people who are so selfish and self centered that they’ve lost all compassion for others. I wonder if they realize the gravity of what they’ve done, or if they even care. Somehow I have the feeling that if Gayle and Sheila Muhls are upset, it’s because they’re sitting in a jail cell for shooting some “damned trespassers.”
UPDATE 05/12/2009 – Liberty County Sheriff’s Department Releases Revised Version Of Events That Led To The Death Of Donald Coffey Jr.

Liberty County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Ken DeFoor said the Coffey family — mom Becky, dad Donald Sr. and their three children — were visiting friends along with Patrick Cammack and Cindy Nelton in the Muhs’ neighborhood near Dayton, Texas, about 45 miles east of Houston.
The two families had planned to go off-roading at the nearby government-owned levees on the way home, an activity that is both popular and legal in the area, DeFoor said.
In the Jeep were Cammack, 30, Donald Coffey, 30 and Donald Jr., 7. In the following Ford SUV were Becky Coffey, Nelton and the Coffey’s 5-year-old daughter, Destiny, and 11-year-old son.
The two cars stopped on the county-owned road outside the Muhs’ home so one of the boys could go to the bathroom by the side of the road.
That’s when, DeFoor said, the couple ran out of their house.
“Sheila Muhs started cursing at them ‘Get off our property,’” DeFoor said and fired off at least one round, causing the Jeep, which had started to leave, to veer off the road.
Muhs, he said, then put the shotgun down and chased after the Jeep on her all-terrain vehicle, eventually catching up to it on the levee about 100 yards away, the ATVs headlights pointed at the Jeep.
While that was happening, DeFoor said Gayle Muhs picked up the discarded shotgun and fired at the SUV. DeFoor said the trajectory of that shot showed that the back of the SUV was sprayed with pellets, it’s rear window blown out.
“The SUV was in the process to flee,” the officer said.
Nelton told the Houston Chronicle that they yelled at the Muhs after the first shot that they had kids in the car and to stop shooting, but another gunshot — possibly more — is all they heard in return.
Nelton said Destiny was in the back of the SUV screaming.
“She said, ‘Mama, they shot me. Mommy, they shot me.’ There was blood all over her,” Nelton told the Houston Chronicle.
When it was over, Destiny had been shot in the elbow, Donald Coffey Sr. in the shoulder and Cammack, who was driving the Jeep, in the base of his skull. Little Donald Coffey, however, had been hit by several shotgun pellets in the face and head.
DeFoor said the two families gathered up their wounded into the SUV and raced to the nearest fire station about a mile away where medical helicopters and ambulances transported everyone to the hospital.
DeFoor said the investigation is ongoing, but police believe the Muhs may have fired as many as four shots from the 12-guage pump shotgun, each one spraying 15 pellets.
So it’s even worse than originally thought. The Muhs knew exactly who they were shooting at, and, as I suspected, they just didn’t care. Sheila even chased after the Jeep with an ATV so she could illuminate it with it’s headlights, giving husband Gayle a better target. Fucking uncaring animals – Here’s hoping Prosecutors upgrade those charges to to Capital Murder and the both of them never see freedom again.

This killed me, also when I read that all forensic evidence points to the fact that the family was trying to flee when the second round of fire was discharged by that fugly hick. She blew out the back window of their car as the family tried to get away. I cannot imagine how the parents feel. That poor baby girl, telling her mom she has been shot????. RIP Donald.

I hate guns. I have always hated guns. I know that they are a necessary evil, but stories like this make me hate them even more.
Well Amy, I will admit that I have guns. I am a hobby shootist, have been for the past oh, 30+ years. Was raised with guns and have an extremely healthy respect for them. BUT, there are certain people that should never have guns, and these two folks who look like they have rotten their brains out on a shine-meth cocktail are the prime examples. Honestly? it was truly just good genetics, lol. My mom was gorgeous at 75, and even at 45, I have no wrinkles. And I don’t do anything to my face at all – I don’t use soap or anything on it – just stick my face under the shower every morning, lol. And, I try to avoid the sun, and meth whenever possible =P
I think genetics plays a big part, but so does drug and alcohol use. I have also never been one to wear make-up and I think that has a lot to do with it. My sister-in-law and I are the same age and the difference is that she slathers on the make-up with a trowel. She looks a good 10 years older than I do. That said…..

Well Ladies, like the lead based foundation of times past, they are saying now that the contents of makeup is causing cellular damage and wrinkling etc…. so I switched to mineral makeup for my powder/foundation needs a year and a half ago. It takes some getting used to, that’s for sure. I think genetics does have some major play in it, because even though I wear makeup, there are some of my female classmates who have much more wrinkling than I do… happily the ones who made that makeup claim back in Sophomore year of HS… oh yeah, I remember those comments of how old I would look when I see their pix on the web now =)

You know what Brian, I read some of the comment that the locals made to news articles that were published about this incident, and while the vast majority of people were as disgusted with the Muhses as we are, there were more than a couple who either totally agreed with what they did or thought the only thing they did wrong was fail to give their victims the courtesy of a warning shot. A fucking warning shot?! Like that would have made it all OK. I think the fact that they’re are other people like these 2 Deliverance rejects out there is the scariest thing of all.

A warning shot is their way of saying howdy. They didn’t say howdy so therefore it was not a just shoot. Can’t understand it, but that is the way it is.

Sadly, it did not matter to them that children were in the car. When people like this get an idea in their tiny little minds, they can’t see past it. They believe they were right and damn anyone who says different. I had a lot of these types of people in the area that I grew up in. You didn’t go near their land unless you wanted a butt full of buckshot. I couldn’t understand them then and I don’t understand them now. These two idiots will go to their graves believing that they did nothing wrong.
An Adverse possession of their property as a makeshift memorial to the deceased would be fitting justice. I suggest the placement of a quick cast concrete statue of the deceased placed squarely in their driveway, add a large cross for religious significance, surrounded by bluebonnets, the state flower of Texas (no, it isn’t illegal to pick blue bonnets in Texas, but they might not read the snopes article). Cap all of this with a plaque and get the names of a variety of officials added to the dedication. A fitting caption would be “Even God knows no Trespassing signs don’t work.”
Follow the adverse possession with a request from the local county or city board for an eminent domain request to make the land a permanent park.
Photos of the memorial might even be admissible at sentencing.
At the very least, when these two are sentenced to death, as I truly hope they are, someone can vandalize the sign and add, “Murderers will be executed, their souls will descend. Smile, only a fool could craft a more fitting irony.”
This is the story that made my husband suggest I stop spending so much time on this site. He thinks it’s making me a misanthrope.

These two mugshots look like the “AFTER” pictures you see of people on the effects of meth videos on you tube. My mother is 13 years older than this lady, but looks 30 years younger. I hope I am lucky enough to look as good as my mother does at her age. (Keeps fingers crossed & HOPES!!) What an extreme reaction to people who had done nothing wrong. These two hillbillies had to have been tweaking out or their just that stupid. I can’t believe they didn’t quit shooting when they yelled that they had kids and then these two rednecks had the nerve to call 911 like they were the victims in this situation. Talk about fucking idiots. Well, their precious truck and house is now unprotected….so what was the fucking point? This poor families and how terrified they must have felt is mind boggling. I hope that the victims recover rapidly and my condolences go out to the family for the loss of their son, Donald Jr. RIP Donald Jr.

I think it is really said for people to pass judgement on people or their family members by going by what the news media reports or by even liberty county sheriffs department they are not all that bright. and as for the coffeys they are not all that innacent either as they claim. that is what gets me about all these web sites that reports thing on hear say and not facts and the stupid people that leaves crazy ass responses. may god help every body that leaves stupid comments. i gurantee you people are NOT SAINTS by no means.

So what’s your point? No matter what, the facts of the case are this. The Coffeys and their group were on publically owned property. The Muhs’ shot at the group, who were unarmed and posing absolutely no threat to them or their home. Several people were hit by shotgun pellets and 7-year-old Donald Coffey Jr. was shot in the face and killed. Everything else is bullshit. If you’re trying to defend those two murdering inbreeds, you’re bullshit too.
Believe me, the people who were offended by what the Muhs’ did and left comments reflecting that don’t need God’s help because of that. On the contrary, I think God is probably quite pleased with them. You, however, might think about asking the Good Lord for a better understanding of the value of human life, especially the life of a little child.

I’ve been involved in taxes for longer then I care to acknowledge, both on the individualized side (all my working life history!!) and from a legal stand since passing the bar and pursuing tax law. I’ve rendered a lot of advice and righted a lot of wrongs, and I must say that what you’ve put up makes utter sense. Please carry on the good work – the more individuals know the better they’ll be outfitted to deal with the tax man, and that’s what it’s all about.

I spent a couple of hours this afternoon searching for an alternate cause of death for Donald Coffey Jr., and I never found anything to dispute the gunshot would to the head too Jason. I think this fool might just be a troll. I also agree with you that coroner reports, or at least official causes of death, should be made available to the public.
