Michael Carrasco Sontoya
This is Michael Carrasco Sontoya, age 32. Michael enjoys rough sex, and it seems he doesn’t care if the women he’s with isn’t quite so into it as he is. Some of us, in fact, most of us would call that rape, but not our boy Mikey here. He just says, “Well, the rougher the better.”
Unfortunately for Gabriela Romo, 31, the Michael Sontoya’s of the world don’t come with warning labels.
On September 30th, 2008, Police and Paramedics were called to Sontoya’s apartment at about 6:45AM and found Gabriela Romo, reportedly unconscious according to Santoya.
Paramedics found Gabriela lying on her back, fully dressed, on a bedroom floor. St. Paul Fire District Chief Fawn Hawkinson, who was present on the scene, and another paramedic saw blood on the bedroom floor and walls. It appeared someone had tried to clean it up.
Michael Sontoya, who had been calmly watching as events unfolded, told Hawkinson that Romo had been conscious a few minutes earlier. The Chief knew he was lying, because she was ice cold and was already showing signs of rigor mortis.
Police discover that the underside of Sontoya’s mattress was so soaked with large areas of blood that it had soaked through to the box spring. There were also indications on the walls of attempts made to clean up blood there, including bloody handprints, according to Sgt. Shay Shackle of the St. Paul crime lab.
Sontoya was interviewed by St. Paul police Sgt. Scott Payne. He stated that he and Romo, who were friends from grade school, had been out for drinks earlier that morning at Fabulous Fern’s bar on Selby Avenue in St. Paul. They returned to his place and had sex about 1:30 or 2 a.m., Sontoya told police.
He awoke later to find her unconscious and called 911, he told police. He also said she had been bleeding from her vagina, according to Sontoya.
Unfortunately for Michael Sontoya, Officer Bradley Pearson examined Sontoya’s cellphone and found a grainy photo of a naked woman sprawled on the floor of his apartment.
The woman was Gabriela Romo.
Officer Pearson found that the photo was taken at 5:40 a.m. Sontoya didn’t call 911 until 6:45 a.m., after twice talking to his brother, Tony Sontoya, a Ramsey County sheriff’s deputy.
This is the part that I have a hard time with, when I have to really work to control my anger so I can continue to write this story. It’s the manner in which Gabriela was murdered. I’ll just describe the the cause of death, and let you imagine what this poor woman must have had to endure.
Gabriella had significant injury to her anal and vaginal areas. Her vagina had be perforated twice, including one that penetrated 14 inches into her body cavity, causing injuries to her liver, spleen, and diaphragm. During his interview with Sgt. Scott Payne, Payne took a tape measure and measured the distance from the crook of the Sontoya’s elbow to the end of his fist. It was fourteen inches.
Gabriela Romo bled to death.
Michael Sontoya is a liar, a rapist, and a murderer. Anthony Torres, Sontoya’s defense attorney, repeatedly insists that his client’s version of events pan out. Mr. Torres has an engraved invitation from me to kiss my ass.
Gabriela Roma, known to all her friends as Gaby, by all accounts was a good woman and an excellent mother who worked a full time and a part time job in order to provide for her four kids. Her friends have put up a MySpace page in her memory – you can view it HERE. Gabriela’s family also set up a website called “Justice 4 Gaby“. Just click on the site name to be directed to it.
Michael Carrasco Sontoya has been charged with First Degree Murder. His trial began on May 8th, and, judging my Mr. Torres’ statements so far, promises to be a circus. I will keep everyone informed as soon as the verdict comes in.
I would like to close by quoting the preamble to the family’s memorial website. I found it very touching and would like to share it with all of you:
Gaby was a loving mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She lived her life aspiring to be the best mother to her kids and a good person to everyone she met. She had a bright smile and a kind and gentle heart. She was taken from us too soon and our lives will never be the same without her.
Here’s hoping that these folks get all the justice they deserve, and that Michael Sontoya never gets a chance to hurt another woman ever again.

Trust that all of us at PYSIH are hoping that the jury does the right thing and convicts Michael Sontoya, and that he never, ever sees the light of day as a free man again.

Hm. I have to say, I’d love to personally beat the ever-loving shit out of this guy and sadistic bastard rapists like this. I think it would be justice; I’m female, I’m only a little over 5’2… would have some irony.
Let’s hope instead that the law punishes him to the extent that he deserves (within the scope of law), and that Gabriela’s family can find some peace.

But one thing I don’t understand… Gabriela knew this guy her whole life. Surely then, she must have known that he was a violent, sick fucker? I mean, guys like this don’t live in a vacuum. He had to have a history, and she must have had some clue. So WHY did she go with him?
The most important thing we women can do to protect ourselves is to know who we are fucking. The most important thing we can do for our kids is to know who we are leaving them with. It is sad that so many deaths happen because women don’t follow this simple survival technique.
She was a pretty woman. She shouldn’t have had any trouble meeting men, and spending a little time making them PROVE that they were worthy before jumping in bed with them. It’s a damned shame.

I just want to stay that it is not about trust, I have known both Gaby & Mike my whole life, and never would have even guessed that something like this could ever come from him! Do not get me wrong, I am not defending him in anyway and after these events I am seeing Michael Sontoya in a whole new light, but it was not predictable at all!!! Gaby trusted him because he was a lifelong childhood friend who we all thought until now was a pretty good guy!!!
That was the feeling I got too Heather, but I couldn’t find enough evidence to say they were lifelong friends in my story. The best I could say was that the were friends from childhood. I’m glad you told us that they stayed friends throughout their lives. It confirms that Gabriela wasn’t promiscuous, for those people who might think so (I don’t), or foolish. It also makes Michael Sontoya’s crime even more evil – on top of everything else he betrayed his friend.

You know, I was not trying to be funny. I read the story and it said he liked to have rough sex, so I assumed he was having sex when all this happend. That was my first thought. I am sorry if it offended anyone, but I figured that was it (his thing). I never read anything else like an object being used.

I looked everywhere I could think of, and I could find no mention of Gabriela being drugged. I’m won’t speculate on whether or not she was conscious during Sontoya’s assault except to say I doubt he could get anyone to cooperate with an act as painful as what we’re talking about here without some kind of “incentive”. There’s that and the fact that Gabriela just doesn’t strike me as the kind of woman who’d be into anything that degrading – she had to much pride and self respect.
I went and looked at the family’s site and I left my condolences.
I just want to point out that Gaby was a beautiful woman and the pictures of she alone proves that, but when you see pictures of her with her children there is a light in her eyes to rival the sunshine itself. You can see that the kids are very happy and relaxed around their mother and everything written about how much she loved those kids is true. You can SEE it.
I am seriously going to get on my knees and pray that this doesn’t totally destroy the children because that would make her life one lived in vain.
Seriously, people. I really think that’s what she would want us to do.
I am so glad that she had a loving family that will try to fill her shoes when it comes to those kids or the tragedy would be threefold.

As Mr. Santoya’s lawyer, I wish to advise all that Gabby was a very heavy sleeper, so my client, who has known her for years, was unable to tell that she was dead because of that. He was very afraid to wake her becuase she has a terrible temper if she is deprived of her sleep.
She has also been known for EMS – Extreme Menstruation Syndrome and my client came over to help his dear friend with her problem. It was unusually heavy that month and as a result she was very tired from the rapid blood loss.
There fore it’s her fault for bleeding to death because she did not seek treatment for her condition.
My client is a good man because none of his checks have bounced.
If the atty uses something like that, letts fry the atty as well.
Why can’t losers like this date someone more deserving of such affections as Susan Smith, Sheila Muhs, Monica Hussing, Stacey Marie Barker…..
What a lovely woman, the kind that could stop traffic. As someone else mentioned, you can only hope and pray it was quick – meaning she was out of it. From the website it sounds like she had a good network of friends and family, who can help with her own family.

I don’t know Lind SAY, but I’m pretty sure his brother Tony the Deputy is testifying for the defense. It’s a shitty position to be in, that’s for sure, but woman is dead. He needs to tell the truth, especially considering that as a member of Law Enforcement he is sworn to uphold the Law.
He can still uphold the law and testify in his brother’s defense. All he has to do is tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. If he comes clean, his brother comes clean and this murder results in a conviction of the guilty party, the justice system has worked. I know you know that, and am not trying to preach to you, but I’m not ready to throw this particular deputy under a bus because his brother is a murderer. I think a conversation went something like this.
“Bro, I need help, something bad… I did something bad.”
“How bad?”
“I think she’s dead,”
“Call the police and then call a lawyer.”
“She’s naked,”
“This conversation needs to be over, call 911 now, call a lawyer, as a matter of fact I will now.”
You’re probably right about the gist of their conversation Jason – I was just speculating about him testifying for his brother. The thing was I couldn’t find any mention that Tony Sontoya was cooperating with the prosecution or that the subject of those two conversations Michael had with him was known. That’s what makes me assume he’s on the defense’s side. Of course, there’s a third option I didn’t consider, and that is that Tony won’t testify at all. I guess I can live with that.
I think there’s a deeper layer to this. Since reading Leo Weingarten’s essay here, I have to give a brother of a criminal a little more credit. Samuel Gagnon had his own crimes to deal with and answer for his brother Michael, but until otherwise stated, this brother is getting a pass from me.

After reading this article in Twincities.com, I’m even more inclined to agree with you Jason. Michael has another brother, Sammy, who is a St. Paul police officer. There was an incident between the two families outside the courtroom Tueday, and Sammy acted as peacemaker. Here are some of the things he said:
“I’m only here because of my parents. I love my brother. He’s my brother. But I’m the first one who wants to punch him in the head.”
“We have two families that are in pain. I don’t even know Gabriela and I think about her every day”
He sounds like a stand up guy to me, and chances are Tony has similar feelings.

It just goes to show you that crimes like these often have many other unintended victims. Imagine how the rest of Sontoya’s family feels… added to the pain of the victim’s family…

There’s a caveat to this, if his family participates in his unlawful defense, they are accomplices after the fact and should be just as “damned” as he is. Thus far, I haven’t seen them coming out swinging with their tongues and typings to reveal some asinine defense like we occasionally see here. Thus far it’s, I’m here for my mother and father, and I’d like to punch him in the head. These are positive things. The family wants blood, that’s natural, but the defendant’s family wanting blood from the defendant as well is remarkably humane and novel.
If they come forward and accept the judgment afterwards as fair, then they get bonus points. If they come on this site and write a letter about what they wanted to say in court, but were denied by a judge or attorney from saying, but still want added to the case, and it is also further damning, then they get in the running for saint. There are several very powerful, active stories on this site that reveal a chance for a glimmer of human decency. I almost think there should be a tab for People you See in Heaven that specifically defines victims and the family and friends of these monsters who categorically reject the inhuman and monstrous qualities of these crimes and embrace the opposite.
We have a gentleman who is killed by the man he opened his house to. We have the brother and victim of a incestuous child rapist who writes an essay on forgiveness…
I like to remain positive when possible and these two helped. If I get the brother of a fisting rapist, who is an upstanding police officer, it’s like hitting some sort of spiritual lottery that in the pit there’s still some good left in this world.

On most dates which have a level of intamacy beyond basic friendship (or even a “benefits” session of a friendship) the woman will become vulnerable as the intimacy escalates.
First the pocketbook is left either in the car or some place when arriving in the house / apartment / etc… rarely does a woman keep the pocketbook along side to the bedroom.
Next any weapons like mace or whatever stay in the coat / jacket pockets and the outer garments get left elsewhere as well.
When things really start to get hot and heavy, concealed weapons become visible and eventually removed……

The same lawyer — Torres — who is defending Sontoya also defended one of Minnesota’s most infamous child rapists, murderers and kidnappers. Do a search on “Robert Guevara” “Corrine Erstad.” Torres got Guevara off for the rape, kidnapping, and murder of 5 YO Corrine even after a mixture of her blood and his semen was found on his shower curtain. They never found Corrine’s little body.

We found out that both of Santoya’s brothers. Sammy and Tony, are police officers, and that his family are good, upstanding people. I’d bet my last dollar that Tony either demanded that Michael call 911 or did it himself.

Gaby’s children are with my cousin who now takes care of their children by himself and I am so uphauled by some of these comments I’ve read. Gaby was a genuine , sweet, would drop anything to help anyone type of person. Mike shot my cousin in the head years prior to this and got away with it. All because of his brother getting rid of evidence. If he was convicted of that this would of never happened. That sick fuck getting life will never bring her back. Her kids (my little cousins) have to live without their mom and with the horrific reality of how she was taken! It’s bullshit ! Gaby u are so so missed n u changed everyone’s life that you were apart of ! Everyone misses you so much! I remember our scrapbooking parties n going up to the cabin with all our kids!
