UPDATE: Timothy Kooyman
We received this comment from the animal rights organization Voices For Animals (website) under the original Timothy Kooyman story. I believe it is so important that everyone read it that I’ve made the unusual step of moving the comment to the front page.
I want to especially point out the instructions on how to contact Riverside County District Attorney Rod Pacheco, requesting he prosecute Kooyman for the three cases of animal cruelty that were dropped in San Bernardino county. This must be done, not only for the sake of those three cats who suffered so horribly at that bastard Kooyman’s hands but for a much more important reason; Because the bottom line about Timothy Kooyman is he is an evil son of a bitch who enjoys torturing poor defenseless animals, and HE WILL OFFEND AGAIN.

Hello — I just wanted to clarify something that was stated about “charges being dropped” in the Kooyman cat torture cases:
First though, thank you for posting the info about Timothy Kooyman on your web site. As many people as possible need to be informed about this very bad guy…. because he won’t be in prison forever.
I am the volunteer who attended nearly every court hearing in the Kooyman cases since June of 2008, on behalf of the California non-profit organization, Voices for Pets. In your post, you state that Timothy Kooyman was arrested in April of 2008. He was not. He was not arrested until May 13, 2008, for the torturing, burning, and mutilation of three cats taken from neighborhoods in Rancho Cucamonga, CA.
Then on May 27, 2008, a Complaint was filed by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s office for SIX counts of animal cruelty (six cats), and one count of recklessly causing a fire of a structure or forest (not arson – that is a different charge). However, at a preliminary hearing on July 1, 2008, Kooyman’s Public Defender objected to three of the cruelty counts, because those three counts were for crimes committed out of this court’s jurisdiction. To be more specific: Kooyman admitted to torturing and killing three cats while he was living at motels in the City of Corona, which is located in Riverside County, a neighboring county of San Bernardino County (only about 20 miles from each other). Therefore, since those cats were tortured in a different county, the Judge dismissed them.
Since the San Bernardino County case has now concluded, we are urging people to contact the Riverside County District Attorney’s office, to urge them to file charges against Kooyman for the crimes he committed in that county. (Some of the worst and most gruesome acts were done by Kooyman in Riverside County.) What has not yet been reported, but actually happened also (according to a subsequent San Bernardino County Sheriff’s interview), is that Kooyman also voluntarily confessed to harming a fourth cat in Riverside County. When Kooyman was living at the Crown motel in Corona from April 16-23, 2008, he got himself a small kitten. He told the Sheriff’s Detective that he filled a plastic tub with water, and then he placed the kitten inside the tub and closed the lid. Eventually, the kitten drowned. After the kitten died, Kooyman threw its body in a dumpster behind a business called Miguel’s Jr. on Sixth St. in Corona. PLEASE – write to:

Just spoke to Imelda at the DA’s office number (2nd number above) and she was really nice – I explained why I was calling and she stated that we have to call the Riverside Police Dept to have charges filed (animal cruelty) against Kooyman – once that is done, the Police Dept. then contacts the DA’s office to prosecute this asshole…the number to the Riverside Police Dept is (951)826-5700.
One question I have is this: How can I call the PD to have charges pressed against him when I have no proof of this? Maybe the person who sent this info to you could do this since they know who has the “evidence” so to speak. I will sign my name to any petition that may be needed to get this asshole charged with these crimes – Let me know what you think on this ok?
And btw,
I have not got a response as of yet in regards to my email that I sent to the Secretary to the DA. In that email I did ask her to please forward it to the DA since I did not have his direct email…I’ll be checking back here for what your opinion is as to the above.

I have just completed a form letter which will be used by myself and several of my collegues to voice their concern on this matter. It will be sent to the address above. Thank you to the animal advocate from “Voices for Pets” for providing us with this information.
Keep writing, e mailing, and calling, if no one says anything about this or demands justice for these animals, it is as good as saying that you are okay with it. Even if you are not a super animal lover, you have to be concerned for society if someone like this is out and about.

As horrific as this is I want to thank you for printing it. People need to know this so they can stay away from this terrible person. If animal abusers and their crimes were brought to the public’s knowledge maybe another animal or human would not die. This is one of the many sad stories about animal abuse. I can’t imagine what these poor cats went through. Animals are creatures of the Earth and like humans have feelings and experience many of the same emotions humans do. Killing and torturing any animal should be cause for the person to be imprisoned because next time it may well be a human that dies at their hands.
I sit here and try to think of a coherent, respectful and succinct way to ask the DA to give this evil piece of shit the maximum sentence while I hold one of my cats who is purring away in my arms. I can’t think of what to say, not while all I can think about is how I’d like to duct tape this guy to a table, cut open his belly and let a big bunch of hungry feral cats eat his guts while he screams and cries for help.

This is slowly but surely beginning to change. Animals have been considered “property” under the law throughout history, but there has been a slow leaning towards understanding that pets are “somewhere” between property and human.
We, as concerned citizens. must make our feelings known about this kind of thing, and demand that our elected officials take this seriously and punish abusers harshly. So contact the DA – the PD – your mother – anyone you know. Because if one court comes down hard on a case like this, it will help the next court to do the same or worse.

It should be prosecuted because it is a crime and because it is wrong, not because he will or has done it to humans. These wads are violent towards all living things but it’s basically like saying he should be prosecuted for apple theft because one day he will steal an orange. Cruelty is cruelty and is equal no matter who it is inflicted on, man, woman, black, white, handicapped, child, or animal – we all feel and experience the same thing. None of us would claim that a baby killer should be prosecuted because they might kill an adult or vis versa. Lack of empathy makes this man lower then a dog on the brain cell scale yet he is still a person and unfortunately falls into the category of a human. We all feel and experience the same thing. I am just so tired of hearing they should be prosecuted because they might progress to people. Most people who torture and kill animals do it to people also. I am sure many start being cruel to people at the same time or even before as animals however this isn’t an interest of study so we don’t read about it. They should be prosecuted for their crimes period.
If he confessed to one that is all the proof they need on that. There is no excuse in that case not to. And most everywhere has animal cruelty charges. The problem is that in many states it is a misdemeanor but more states are changing it to a felony. It would seem to me California should have some strict animal cruelty laws to charge him under. The question is why isn’t this agency pursuing it, who is making that decision and why. Sometimes it just comes down to someone making the decision who doesn’t give a crap about it.

The whole thing about serial killers as children abusing animals came from a study done on serial killers trying to come up with some statistics for behaviors from childhood and adolescence and adulthood. That is why this “they started on animals” thing came about. It was simply a question of did they abuse/kill animals as children, did they abuse them as teenagers and did they abuse them as adults. Likewise there were also other questions about when they began killing people. The study is on the FBI site under information about serial killers in the united states from 1960′s to now. It simply was a study question and was then used along with other questions to come up with behavioral indications.

Life is about choices, but the choices we make are determined by the life we live up to that point. A Bantu tribesman is not going to use a cell phone to talk to his neighbor in the tent next door if he is given the opportunity. He would probably walk the five seconds and talk this person, because this is what he knows.
People in situations that do not allow them to make or inflict change tend to feel as if they are becoming helpless. They feel powerless, unable to change the world or become part of it and do things (sometimes drastic actions) that allow them to feel as if they are creating change, to help them feel as if they are important. Most people grow up with parents that care for them; make them feel wanted, allow them to learn how to fight and impart change in their environment. As such these people enter adulthood with a strong sense of self. They believe that they are in control of their actions, which, to a point, they are. The abused person is made to feel second to the caregiver. This person is not allowed to impact their environment. They are made to feel like their whole existence is solely based on what they can do for other people, and that their worth lies only in the job they do, and not in their own merits as a human being. These people usually get used by an employer or impregnated by an abusive boyfriend, only to be left with the child. Do we blame the girl for making the “bad” choice for going with the guy? She should have known better. But she is a victim, and that is all she knows.
I think the most accurate historical event which relates to this situation is the Sparrow Campaign initiated by Mao Zedong of China in the early fifties. In an attempt to help his people learn how to fight, he created a movement where 2 million Chinese people took to the street day and night and did not allow the city sparrows to rest. They would poke the sparrows out of trees, bang on drums, and generally not allow the sparrows sleep until they died of exhaustion. Tens of thousands of sparrows died in a futile attempt to allow the people of communist china (who were being abused by the system itself actually) to extract some kind of revenge on nature, even though it was society who was the abuser. The result was not good, since sparrows consume locusts, the locusts bred uncontrollably and ruined mass crops, producing famine and lots of death.
Is it wrong to kill sparrows? yes it is. Did they go against what they believe? Yes they did. Think about this for a second… If you truly had self control and could make decisions, then the holocaust would not have happened. But Hitler convinced a whole country to turn against their friends, and that it was just and right. Think about your hairstyle. Do you wear it because you woke up one day and decided to look a certain way, or are you following society?

Yes, people can be swayed by charismatic leaders and the actions of those around them. “Folie a deux.” But we are not robots. Although you don’t come right out and say so in your lecture, my feeling is, you imply we are affected solely by our experiences as children, and, we have no choices but to “act out” if we were repressed in any way.

I hope the scumbag has the same thing done to him that he did to those poor defenseless kitties. I hate people that abuse animals and children and women. Nancy you ignorant bitch, I was abused by my father every day of my life. In fact the last time he abused me I was 38 years old! When I tried to have him arrested they wouldn’t arrest him because he was a retired cop! I have never hurt anything or killed anything in my life. Doesn’t mean I didn’t want to, but I would never hurt anybody or any animal just because I was abused. So shut your fucking stupid mouth. you know nothing about what happens to someone who has been truly abused.
