UPDATE: Angelo Mendoza Jr. Can See!

CHILD ALLEGEDLY BLINDED BY FATHER REGAINS SIGHT IN REMAINING EYE
    by Steve E. Swenson
    Bakersfield.com

090515_angelo_mendoza_jr_logoAngelo Mendoza Jr., the 4-year-old whose eyes were allegedly maimed by his father, has regained partial eyesight, a source familiar with his condition said Thursday. The boy can see out of his damaged but intact right eye and his vision is expected to improve, the source said.

He is getting regular care from an ophthalmologist and his eye is healing, the source said.

The left eye was bitten out by his father, 34-year-old Angelo Vidal Mendoza, Bakersfield police reported.

The father is awaiting further court proceedings on charges of mayhem, torture and child cruelty.

The Mendoza boy is in a foster home pending a decision on custody. An unknown number of relatives of the boy are seeking custody, according to his uncle, 26-year-old Jesse Rosas, who is also seeking custody.

In the meantime, the boy is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances, the source said. Counseling has also been set up for the child.

A limited amount of information is available on the boy because of confidentiality restrictions in the Child Protective Services system.

Police reports say the boy was attacked and blinded on April 28 by his wheelchair-bound father. Minutes later, the father left his apartment, went to a nearby vacant backyard and cut up his own legs with an ax and a broken ceramic plate. Mendoza tried to make it appear that gang members attacked him, police reports say.

The father was paralyzed by a knife attack four years ago during a robbery attempt, his family has said.

It’s not often I get to post some really good news, so when Alanna found this superb little nugget, it had to go on the front page. I’m just so happy for this little kid. I’m telling you, finding out that Angelo Jr. won’t be blind for the rest of his life really made my day. The circumstances of this case, that it was his father, wasted on PCP, who blinded him, and that his mother was either too stupid or too uncaring to check on him when he cried out for her, were almost too much to expect a young child too take, and a positive outcome like this could make all the difference for him. So here’s a big thank you to Alanna for letting us all know about the little man’s progress.

YAY! Hell yeah! I am so glad to hear this! There is a God and I pray that there will also be Justice for his monster of a “father”!

My day is a little brighter now!

      Thanks for the GREAT news!

Bless his little heart. I have a 4 year old albino son who the doctors said will be legally blind for the rest of his life and now is seeing very well. The same joy I feel whenever he see’s a color or points out something is the same joy I feel for this little Angel right now.

Like Loula, it’s a gray and rainy day on the East Coast, but I was happy to have found this article last night, and so happy to be able to share it with everyone.

I was hoping when the original story came out on this website that perhaps modern medicine would be able to one day give this little boy back the sight that was stolen from him… it’s GREAT that this little boy can see again!! Just a little bit of happy news for PYSIH =)

    6. LoulaCherry says:

…and i’d like to thank all the kind souls that read my sleepy comment from earlier and were polite enough to ignore the fact i got the little fellas name wrong… Angelo not albert…! Sorry little guy, i really do wish you well, though this was a story i really wished i hadn’t read at the time… Its stopped raining now though its still grey and dull, but as i said earlier this update really lifted my spirits… ;)

    7. ArchGhost says:

Yay! He will be stronger than ever now, thank god he will be able to see!

    8. momwhocares says:

this is WONDERFUL news. it makes me sad that he is in a foster home instead of with family, although one has to wonder about his family anyways… considering they let him stay with his dad who was clearly on drugs. i feel like he needs tons of love and care right now, and i just pray he is getting it.

    9. Lind SAY says:

Yay! PYSIH has the happy! This is rare!

    10. wondermom says:

YaaaaaaaaaaaaY!!!!! Wooo Fuckin Hoo! The only thing that could make this story better is if the poor baby was never hurt @ all. Thanks Alanna, for the update. Good lookin out!

    11. darklite says:

The original story really upset me, i’m so glad that this beautiful boy will regain his sight! I wish him love and happiness for the rest of his life.

    12. Tito says:

It’s news like this that I hope to here more of for stories like this. To have a complete 180 u-turn from the original story rings me endless joy.

    13. LJ says:

Wonderful news! The resiliency of children is amazing! You never know, maybe stem cell research will help out with the case of the other eye?

      • Fantomah says:

Actually, depending on the condition of the other eye (well, eye socket) he’d probably be a good candidate for a transplant.

    14. Corset Lass says:

Wow, I’m so happy that I’m crying! I’m so glad that this sweet little boy will still be able to see all the beautiful things in life. He deserves nothing but the best for all of the suffering he’s been forced to endure. I told my husband about this case and he was just shaking with fury. If looks could have killed, the father of this child would have been dead. I hope his father is told by a prison tough, “Mendoza….you sick fuck…..you didn’t take your son’s sight! Now we’re gonna take yours!” And then a group of pissed of prisoners put him through the same torture he inflicted on his son. He deserves a lot worse, but I’d be happy with that for starters.

    15. Blondie says:

Thank God. Now let us all say a little prayer that baby Angelo doesn’t get lost in the system and is never, ever, forced to have visitation with the POS excuse for a father or mother.

    16. Nissa says:

I’ve cried over a lot of stories on this site, but this is the first time it’s been tears of relief. This story has been haunting me since I read it, I even had a nightmare about it. I’m so happy that this little boy is getting his sight back! It’s almost enough to make me believe in miracles. :)

    17. Smiley says:

It makes me so happy this adorable little guy can see again!! This case made me bawl like a baby. That is the stuff of nightmares. His POS sperm and egg donor shouldn’t ever get near him again!! I hope that baby has a better life now…..

    18. glorybug says:

I guess I’m just a pessimist. I’m glad that this baby isn’t blind for life now, but come on. He still only has one eye. And he only has one eye because of the POS that called himself ‘DAD’.

Don’t get me wrong- I am so glad that he was able to save the sight in the one eye his dad left him with, but I just really hate to think that this story will go down as ‘resolved’ just because he miraculously got sight iin the eye that was left.

Years after I write this post, this kid will be an adult, and II doubt theiir life will be better just because they got siight back ini one of their eyes. This ‘dad” needs to fry. It won’t help their kid, but it wiill dispose of the garbage that keeps piling up.

I cant stop thinking about this boy and how he suffered that night that his father tortured him. No innocent child deserves to be near such a monster. I hope that he can see and that the family that adopts him treats him well.

    20. worm082 says:

I am so happy to hear this. As a father of a child the same age this really bothered me. Im so so so happy for little Angelo! They say his sight will continue to improve! God bless him!

    21. monica says:

Thank you for the update! I hope he gains his full eye sight back. Poor kid. I’m soooo glad he’s doing better.

    22. bo says:

this little man IS THE MAN,ANGELO MY MAN IF U EVER SEE THIS, U R MORE MAN THAN THAT SO CALLED DAD WILL EVER BE.

    23. Joy says:

      Hi Baby Angelo,

God bless you sweetheart, I wish you the best of luck through
the coming years. I hope to GOD that you find a good home, and a good
family to care for you. I don’t even know you and I love you little guy. As for the DAD you don’t deserve to even live, i hope you rot in hell.
