Eric Royce Leonard
Rush Limbaugh, who once was a local radio personality in California’s Sacramento region before his national fame, used to call the subdivision of Rio Linda the “armpit of Sacramento”. Rio Linda is also the childhood neighborhood of Eric Royce Leonard, a kid remembered by his peers for doing weird things like eating his pet snake for a dollar.
In early 1991 I was attending college in Sacramento while working as a supervisor at a fast food restaurant on Auburn Blvd. And I was scared. My coworkers were also scared. The entire neighborhood was scared. In fact, the police were scared. We were afraid of Sacramento’s latest serial killer, nick-named the “Thrill Killer” but also known as the “Beef Jerky Killer” by Sacramento homicide detectives outside the hearing of the public. Sacramento has a long history in the serial killer arena, ranking as the 20th largest United States metropolitan area but according to the Sacramento News and Review, it has been home to a whopping 15% of the nations known serial killers.
The story of the “Thrill Killer”, and the weeks of terror in the first half of 1991, all began on Monday, February 11th. This was the day when Eric Royce Leonard pleaded guilty to shoplifting eight bars of soap. He was told to either spend two days in jail or pay a $141 dollar fine. Leonard did not want to spend two days in jail so he promised to pay the fine but asked for a little time to come up with the money. Leonard kept his promise and came up with the money.
Shortly before midnight on Tuesday February 12th Sacramento County Sheriffs Deputies arrived to a scene of carnage at Quik Stop #112 on Auburn Blvd. Found dead in the store were employees Zeid Ahmad Obeid, twenty, Mark Anderson, thirty-five. Outside the store was fatally wounded customer Thor Johnston, who lived in the nearby trailer park. He was laying next to his overturned wheel chair. All three had been shot in the back of the head execution style. At first, the Sheriff’s investigators misinformed the media, were mistaken, or there was a communication break-down. The media was told nothing was stolen from the Quik Stop and the unknown perpetrator was dubbed a “Thrill Killer”.
Eric Royce Leonard paid his fine. It would turn out that money was taken from the Quik Stop. Less than $200 dollars. What was also stolen from the Quik Stop was five containers of beef jerky. The containers were found outside the store, empty.
Exactly one week later, shortly after 11PM Tuesday, February 19th about a mile away from the Quik Stop, three employees of the Watt Avenue Round Table were found in the back kitchen shot execution style in the back of the head. Dead were thirty-year-old manager Andrea Colangelo, twenty-year-old Kyle Reynolds, and eighteen-year-old Sarah Crook.
Ballistics tests on the shell casings linked the killings to the same firearm. “Thrill Killer” had struck again. Although $500 dollars was stolen in this robbery, once again the Sheriff’s Department would not disclose money was taken.
The case made national news as local media and law enforcement alarmed Sacramento by speculating that the “Thrill Killer” would continue to kill on consecutive Tuesdays. On Tuesday, February 26th the region in which the killer had struck was swamped with officers from the Sheriff’s Department, Police Department, and Highway Patrol as well as from other neighboring agencies. A would be car thief found himself spread eagle on the ground as a dozen law enforcements officers converged upon him. But “Thrill Killer” would not make another appearance.
On this night I was off from work but out of concern for my coworkers went in around 8 PM to discover the restaurant in the process of closing two hours early. Although we had appealed to the corporate management to close before nightfall because of the possibility of being killed, the request was denied. Shortly before I had arrived, police officers had come in and ordered the restaurant to close. Although the police had no authority to do it, the staff was more than happy to comply with the “order” and locked the doors.
It would be sixteen weeks of hard old fashioned police work before the identity of the “Thrill Killer” would be solved. Shortly after the Quik Stop murders the neighborhood had been canvassed by police and in the door-to-door questioning police had noted what respondents had been wearing. Eric Royce Leonard answered his apartment door wearing a green toned trench coat. He answered some brief questions and aroused no suspicion. Some of the witnesses in the neighborhood on the night of the robbery stated they had seen someone wearing a trench coat. On the evening of the Round Table murders, a witness had stated she had seen a man riding a bicycle behind the restaurant wearing a trench coat. Questioning local gun dealers a shop owner admitted to selling the same caliber ammo used in the killings to a customer wearing a trench coat.
Over 700 people were identified as suspects in the killings, one person even gave a false confession while two prison escapees were known to be in the area and had stolen a weapon of the same caliber used in the murders. But it was the trench coat that brought police back to Leonard’s apartment. When Leonard was taken in for questioning, detectives could not help but notice he was processing his own home made beef jerky in the kitchen.
Eric Royce Leonard came into his interview with a notepad of his own taking names and making threats against detectives. When the detectives informed Leonard he had been identified as having bought ammunition from a gun store, Leonard informed them that he did not even own a .25 caliber pistol. Leonard had hung himself. No one but the police and the murderer knew the caliber of the weapon. The police had made it a point not to release that information to anyone. Asked if he knew anyone who owned a .25 caliber pistol Leonard admitted his father owned one and the detectives drove out to Rio Linda and retrieved what ballistics would prove was the murder weapon in all six killings.
Leonard’s father was brought in to talk to him and Leonard confessed that he did the killings and acted alone.
Eric Royce Leonard pleaded innocent and the trial is one of the most memorable in Sacramento history. While his defense attorney questioned a witness about Leonard’s seizures, 
Leonard had one. A law enforcement officer would sarcastically remark that Leonard’s seizures did not prevent him from killing six people. Also notable was that in the middle of the trial Leonard stood up and shouted “I did it!!”. Leonard’s attorney demanded a mistrial in a scene that would lead to an amusing cartoon being printed in the Sacramento Bee in which a lawyer who is covering his clients mouth argues, “Your honor, now that my client has confessed, he cannot get a fair trial”. Between the time the murders were committed and the time he was caught the case was under the spotlight of the media. In many instances the community was able to catch glimpses of the people Eric Royce Leonard murdered for “get out of jail money” and beef jerky. Twenty year old Zeid Ahmad Obeid was a recent Kuwaiti immigrant who had quit the Quik Mart after a previous robbery but returned because he needed the measly $125 dollar a week job in order to live, there was no furniture in his apartment and he slept on the floor. 42-year-old Thor Johnston was loved by his family and was going through bad health when he was gunned down in his wheel chair.
Twenty year old Kyle Reynolds came from a loving family and was raised in the Sierra Nevada Foothills. In order to attend college he transferred from the Round Table he had worked at for three years to move down to Sacramento to be out on his own for the first time. On a memorial page created by Kyle’s mother on MurderVictims.com, mom commented on her twenty year old son, “From the very beginning Kyle was bright and caring and loved by all. …he loved everyone and always saw the good in people. …Even with all the positive efforts we make forward, the void of Kyle’s death remains with us everyday, nothing will ever be the same.”
Judie Reynolds also remarked on the fact that the Deputy District Attorney was honest enough to tell her that she nor her husband would probably ever live long enough to see the death sentence carried out.

Frustrating that 18 years later, his sentence has still not been carried out yet. Yes you have to be careful not to kill the wrong guy. But the evidence is there and he admitted to it. There should be no reason for holding things up at this point.

There are many people who do not believe any act deserves Hell…all human life has the potential to be redeemed therefore, no one is Hellbound. Then there are those that believe it’s not our job to send someone to Hell and feel that by voting yes on the polls, it’s the same as saying “Go to Hell”. They don’t understand the difference between fantasy and reality. Of course we are not voting to send someone to hell, we are saying who we feel deserves Hell.
This is off-topic, but my daughter awoke at 6:30AM hungry and while I fed her I read this article. We both fell asleep again around 7:30AM and I had one of my first nightmares in years. She was maybe four years old (she’s only 5 months) and we were at my parents. We were going around locking all the doors and windows and turning on all the outside lights. I went to the backdoor and couldn’t get it locked. She was freaking out, desperately trying to flee into the backyard. I grabbed her and managed to lock the door, then I took her kicking and screaming into the basement. She usually liked it down there. I was turning the lights on when I felt funny and decided we should go upstairs. As I neared the basement steps my ponytail was yanked backwards and she was grabbed out of my arms. I seriously almost woke up screaming.

Wow. Lantern. This really was a very disturbing time for Sacramento. I was a senior @ Johnson and worked at Taco Bell on Folsom (east sac) when this was all happening. It is upsetting his sentence hasn’t been carried out yet. Thank you for doing such a great job writing this, and for taking the time to remind us of those who were lost.

I own a High School sports photo business with my husband. We’ve gotten calls from parents who lost their children in Iraq and Afghanistan and to various tragedies (even murder), asking if we have negatives from the last photos taken of their child. We took the last photo taken of their child, and the implication is never lost on us. We always comp print a huge memorial poster for them and give them whatever negatives we have and anything else we can possibly come up with because it’s the only thing we can do to help them through their nightmare.
I’m 36. I’m not done with life, I have a lot left to do and a lot still to look foreword to. When I was 18, I couldn’t imagine all of the amazing things the next 18 years of my life would bring. And now I can’t imagine having missed those things. All 3 victims at the Quik Stop were younger than me and not done with life either. There are no words, there is no punishment or retribution that could possibly to make this right.
The stories where some poor, innocent kids are working at Pizza Hut for gas money, then some asswipe who needs some cash but can’t be bothered to work for it comes in one night and blows them all away for $100 in the till, really bother me. My kids have all worked minimum wage jobs, sometimes late at night, to make ends meet. It’s hard not to be scared for them.
I hope this POS enjoys his time behind bars. He’ll be eating lots of “beef jerky” all right. Just not the kind he thought.

It’s always interesting to me to read about a crime, but also hear about some personal details that people remember that is not normally reported in the media because it’s not factual information. The one thing that killed me was the fact that Leonard actually stood up at his own trial and shouted, “I did it.” What a fruit loop! But, the attorney really killed me because of asking the judge for a mistrial and saying that Leonard couldn’t get a fair trial…..it’s like you want to laugh and say, “Hello…..your fruity freakin client just confessed, so now it’s going to be public record!” An excellent example of a stupid criminal!

The detectives allowed Leonard’s father to speak with him alone and then according to the detectives, the father came out and told the police that Leonard had confessed everything to him.
Down the road the father would claim that his son never never never confessed anything to him.
Well, the father’s barretta was used to kill all six people. So, if his father thinks that his son is innocent- who is the only logical other person who did it ?

My father name is Thor Johnson. He was the customer that was found outside of QuickStop. He was not in a wheel chair and he lived in the appartments next door, but that’s a whole different story. I am the same age my father was when he was killed. How long do I have to wait for this monster to meet his maker in hell?
Sarah Crook was a very good friend of mine. She was a beautiful young woman with a big, bright future. I worked with her there in that very Round Table and one other. She will be greatly missed. Eric needs to die soon. I hate the policies of this State. If this was Texas we would be done with this.

my late husband and i at one time before the murders lived in the same apts. on annadale lane where leonard lived. we lived in elk grove when the crimes were commited. until the arrest, we never went out at night. the fear really gripped sacto. they had an interview on a local station with the son of thor johnson sr. and i felt so sorry for him. i’m 62 and pray to be alive when this monsters life ends.

My heart goes out to you Mr. Coladangelo for the loss of your sister in such a pointless and cruel way. Eric Royce Leonard is a total coward, something he proved over and over again, first by murdering six helpless, unarmed victims, then by pleading not guilty in the face of overwhelming evidence, and again by trying to finagle a mistrial (at the advice of his attorney, I’m sure) with his little “I did it” stunt. Let’s hope when they do get around to executing his sorry ass, they botch his execution and he suffers as much pain as possible.

i worked down the strret at burger king during that time…i used to have a friend that worked at roundtable but she was not working there anymore.. i had spoke to the girl who was shot and killed.
i remember the the street angels who walked up/down the block and the sheriff’s who canvassed and interviewed us. crazy time and glad he was caught.
i remember sarah too..she was cool and went to the same jr college as i did at the time.
I grew up with zeid ahmed obied in kuwait city he was dying to come over the u.s.a zeid use to fight with his dad almost every day his dad was against him coming to the u.s but him and his mother wanted to his dad sent a letter to my dad asking him if he can come to Mi. instead but my father never ansewer his dad so he end up in CA. where he got killed Ibelieve his distany brought up here to die.
as for the apts where he was found…when the sheriffs interviewed me i told them the annadale apts. the officer asked me why i thought that… That was the closest apts to the quick stop.. it was the first killing.. it had to be close and spontaneous is what i told him. i had friends there and we talked about it..he/she had to be real close. i remember ripping thru that curvy street in my bucket of a cavalier at 70 mph. and it made sense to me.

On the third tues. me and 2 friends were stocked while playing basketball at an Elementry school for two hours, by a man in a trench coat and hat. I did call the police and describe the person and actions of this odd fully dressed person on a hot summer day. They said..(he hasnt attacked anyone at a school yet) so they were doubtful that this was the Thrill killer. He didnt strike that night, and was sometime later arrested with his parents home just across the street from the elementry school I was at!!!!!!!! Holy Shit..That has Haunted me for years,I’m glad I just found this web page to tell people related to this case. Sorry to those of you who lost somebody in this tragedy….P.s. I dont have any remorse for people like this and really dont understand our judicial system
This was a cold California February, but I get your meaning.
I went to high school with Sarah. She was quiet, calm, well-liked, easy going, cool. Everytime I hear of a random, senseless killing I think of her. The rest of our high school class got to live to 19. Sarah didn’t. That terrible truth still blows my mind, and makes me wonder how I can ever have a “bad” day in my life, when Sarah had so few days at all.
When I am thinking unemotionally, I am more in favor of life in prison than the death penalty. But when I remember Sarah, I remember exactly how it felt to be 18 and free, newly released from high school, believing the whole world is wide open. Then the utter and total senselessness of these killings just punches me in my gut, all over again. I think of the bewildering pain her family must still feel.
I just want this creature put to death. He’s already had 20 extra years that Sarah didn’t.
eric is my brother. . . half brother. i grew up with him. he had epilepse. he couldn’t even goto school with us kids cause of the seizures. we had a go cart and one day we were at the school play ground taking turns riding on it. my brother had epileptic seizure and ran full speed into a wall. his mom [not mine] killed herself by crashing into a tree when he was 8. he had siezures 3 or 4 times an hour. his mom took a med that caused brain abnormalty in infants. he had siezures when he was a brand new little baby. well. . . . one day the fuckin doc said he had a drug to stop the siezures. it worked, he got his own place was going to school, everything was great. he was having a hard time making friends. some bloods [like the gang] picked him for a easy puppet, well the side affects with his [now band] anti siezure meds were hearing voices, this shit changed him. i cant explain. well these bloods told him he could be part of the gang if he robed a store. he went in and stomped and kicked and fuckin shot everyone in the store. one prob. he forgot the money. the bloods knew who he was, told him he was crazy. eric didnt care he had new friends in his head. well the truth is that he is back to the kid i knew. the siezures are back. no more voices. he dosnt remember any of it. dont think it would be right for him to goto hell seeing as he has been there all along. sorry so sloppy on a wii. so much i left out. wish he had a chance. love ya bro so dose linda from londen.
My son has grand mal epilepsy. He’s 22 and stays on his meds. He actually WORKS for a living, just got a BS in psychology and never hears voices in his head. I don’t buy this particular disability as being a cause for having no empathy for working folks, killing them instead to buy friends or gain a little cash.

Everyday kills me knowing I got to grow up without my dad, Eric Leonard ruined me and my mother’s life. People just don’t understand there’s no excuse to kill someone if they’re sick or have a mental disorder it’s called a treatment facility USE IT!!! Aho…My name is Terik and as for myself am the Husband of Jennifer Prater-Anderson…I myself as being an Active Wiccan Priest am NOT or should NOT wish ANYTHING negative towards ANYONE,but in the comments that I’ve read so far from ALL of YOU on here,completely make me SICK…I’ve been thru alot or something myself due to the Death/Passing/MURDER of my exgirlfriend back in 1994…I WILL be there when Eric is put SLEEP..using that term just makes me sick to my stomach & I cast his SOUL & SPIRIT 2 vanquish in complete HELL…he will NOT go to heaven OR to the SPIRIT WORLD…he does NOT need to be let off…I cry,hurt &feel for the LOSS of my wife losing her father…she’s my whole world & will forever be there for her no matter what…from what I’ve read that all of you hav said about this subject,YOU are NO different from them lame ass people that had voted NO on him going to HELL…I myself hav grown up w/OUT my father in my life BUT I have had the chance to have a Step-Father to teach me…my wife NEVER had that oppertunity to experience it…so the stuff that she’s learning rite NOW that a FATHER should have taught her,I AM the 1 doing it…and it’s NOT because of her father being gone & n the hands of the ancestors in the Spirit World but it’s because it’s my duty as her husband to teach her & show her what ALL I know…so to everyone that’s voting NO on this or IS commenting on this Subject OR Situation,you REALLY “DO” need to honestly WATCH what YOU say…it’s NO different from when they say “If YOU don’t have ANYTHING nice OR positive to say,then keep your FAT mouth SHUT”!!!people like YOU I look down on…I myself am a FULL BLOODED “NATIVE AMERICAN”I hate ALL Christians,Catholics,Jehovah Witnesses,Morons(mormons),etc…YOU all say ONLY “god”can judge US,well that is nothing but a huge line of bullshit…I hate the Bible & everyone that believes n it…all of you are extremely confused & contradicting yourselves & along w that stupid religion…if I could then I’d BURN “everysingle” BIBLE thru out the ENTIRE world…I’d have everysingle Christian,Catholic,etc Burned on their OWN religious cross…but for now on I really want for everysingle one of you to actually “STOP” and “THINK” before you make a comment on ANY subject especially you NEVER know if the subject is on this situation,because you never know if the persons family that ARE a VICTIM is actually reading the comments being said…And now this goes out to ALL of the VICTIMS & their families,I send you ALL my utmost Respects & Appologies for your loss/losses due to that EVIL little BOY(he’s NOT a man in my eyes),for taking the lives of your family members during them weeks & which of course WAS,HAS BEEN & STILL IS a “NIGHTMARE” for all of you…I pray to the Gods & the Goddesses that you are shown the right visions of love & respects from everyone…I also hope & pray that the state of CALIFORNIA decides to give him the MOST SLOW & EXTREMELY PAINFUL DEATH that Eric Leonards could ever SEE & FEEL…I pray & hope that the victims are the ones WHO actually get to do it to him…it’s like they say “YOU TAKE a LIFE thn YOU LOSE YOURS”!!!!!!!!!!!! I myself will instruct the WRden at the prison that Eric leonards will be Exacuted at will NOT hav OR let a Christian or any kind of BIBLE THUMPING Priest to be there to Pray over him on that very day…Eric Leonards does NOT have that RIGHT to be prayed upon….he needs to jus die extremely painfully & very slowly…well I’m done here on this now…so if you have anything to say OR comment on what I’ve said in this subject,then I suggest you ALL just keep it ALL to yourselves…I DONT care what you ALL have to say because you ALL deserve the exact same thing as that Pathetic Excuse of a human…so to all out there that feels the exact same way that I DO,then all I’ve gota say to you is……Blessed Be….
My cousin Kyle Reynolds would have been 41 years old today. Eric leonard destroyed my family that day he shot them- and Im sure the families of the other 5 victims as well. No amount of time makes it hurt less. He was a sweet, smart, hardworking kid who was working to put him self thru college – As a catholic we’re brought up to believe that only God has the right to decide who lives or dies…that in the end, Mr Leonard will serve his time. After sitting thru this trial, and watching him every day, I have to be honest and say that I dont know if I believe in hell enough to know that that is where he’ll end up once he’s dead…but my cousin will only be as old as his autopsy photos – and now I have to watch this killer live every year, live and breathe and eat and smile…every day…until his sentence is carried out. It is unfair and unjust. Thank you for this article. I look forward to updates… RG

I’m sorry for your loss. It’s been 4 years since Michael Gagnon killed Bethany and the girls. Her 40th birthday came and went and her former husband and I don’t keep up like we should. I’ll be alone or with a group of people and I’ll see something about the situation and it makes me panic. At Halloween there was a pair of little girls dressed as mermaids. Bethany made them costumes the Halloween before they died, sewing the sequined material and being so proud of herself. The week then goes back to the grief exercises that grief counseling taught. Changing thought, activity and outlook to change the way I think, act and feel.
Gagnon doesn’t get the needle, and my own state legislature has changed hands so the people I was getting to work on it are out of office or unresponsive as they focus on a ballot measure against gay marriage. I’m not Catholic, I’m not Wiccan like the post above, I’m barely Methodist when I really remember what confirmation was about, but in the end, I think what we have to do is survive. I’m so sorry for your loss, I’m so glad you shared with us. This website has long been for the victims as much as the entertainment of others. I’ll see what we can find.
