FATHER OF TWINS FOUND GUILTY OF MURDER, NEGLECT

July 20, 2009, NORFOLK–The father of twin baby girls has been convicted of second-degree murder and two counts of child neglect.
Corey Bryant had been on trial since last week.
Bryant and his wife, Heaven Smith, had faced charges in connection with their daughters, Miracle and Heaven. Miracle died of starvation and neglect on April 8, 2008, the day Bryant returned home from a three-week Navy cruise. She was 10 months old.
Heaven was hospitalized for months but survived.
During Bryant’s trial, a judge heard testimony from Smith, who has previously pleaded guilty to neglect and murder. Smith said the couple often left the babies home alone in infant seats. She said she recalled her husband feeding the girls only four or five times.
In announcing the verdict, Judge Mary Jane Hall called the evidence in the case “shocking.”
“These two babies were tortured,” she said. “The medical evidence of long-term starvation and neglect was overwhelming.”
Bryant had been free on bond. After the verdict, he was taken into custody. His sentencing was set for November.
MOM TESTIFIES DAD DOPED BABIES IN NEGLECT CASE

Sometimes the couple left the babies home alone so they could go out to eat or to the movies. Bryant gave the girls cold medicine so they would sleep.
That’s according to testimony from Smith during Bryant’s trial on charges of murder and child neglect. One of their daughters, Miracle, died of starvation and neglect on April 8, 2008, the day Bryant returned from a three-week Navy cruise. The other girl, Heaven, also suffered from starvation and neglect and remained in the hospital months after the discovery. She survived.
Smith has already pleaded guilty to murder and neglect charges and is scheduled to be sentenced next week. She spoke slowly during her testimony. She smiled when prosecutor Jill Harris asked her to identify a picture of one of her daughters, taken when the girls were chubby, healthy infants. “That’s Heaven,” she said. When Harris showed Smith a picture of her other daughter, Smith also said “That’s Heaven.”
From mid-November 2007, when the girls were 5 months old, until the day Miracle died, Smith said, they did not have a baby sitter.
Smith said she had considered abortion when she found she was pregnant, but decided against it. After the babies were born, she suffered from severe depression: She
heard voices, stopped eating, became suicidal. She said she told Bryant she could no longer care for the babies and asked him about putting the girls up for adoption.
He wasn’t interested, asking her what their parents would think and reminding her they would get more pay from the Navy if they had children, she said.
Smith said she recalled Bryant feeding the girls only four or five times. Often, she testified, he worked on an old sports car he was restoring, leaving the girls unattended inside.
In January, around the time their marriage became unstable, Smith said, she began feeding the girls less and less. She fed the girls twice a day, she said, leaving them in the infant seats with the bottle propped up to do so. She rarely fed them anything but formula.
She lifted them only to change their diapers, which she also did twice a day. Bryant told her to keep the girls covered when they went out so no one could see the rashes covering their bodies, she said.
Before he left for the Navy cruise, Smith said, Bryant saw that the girls’ skin was hanging from their bones. No tears formed when they cried.
“He told me I should try to feed them water,” Smith said. “They were dehydrated.”
On the night before Miracle died, Smith testified, she told Bryant when he called that the girl was struggling to breathe. The baby hardly moved and could barely lift her head. Smith gave the girl a bottle, but she spit up.
“He said take her to the hospital,” Smith said. “But I told him about the rashes on her face and back, and he said he would take care of it when he got home.”
At the hospital the next day, Smith said, after Bryant’s return, he instructed her to tell police that the girls had been with a baby sitter until the previous night.
He made up a name, Michelle Vaughn, and scrolled through his cell phone until he found a disconnected number to give the police, she said. They showed police an apartment complex a short distance away from their own and said that’s where the sitter lived, Smith said.
Investigator Vic Powell testified that police called the number and tried to verify it to no avail. They knocked on every door in the apartment complex and could not find anyone who watched the Bryant babies.
Defense lawyer Shelly Wood asked Smith a series of questions about her role in the girl’s death. Hadn’t Smith been the one at home while Bryant was on the cruise? Hadn’t she been the one who failed to give the girls enough to eat for nearly three weeks? Hadn’t she been the one who failed to take the girls to a doctor?
“I didn’t choose,” Smith replied. “I did what my husband asked me to do.”
“So if your husband told you to jump off a bridge, would you do that?” Wood countered.
“Yes, I would if I was depressed enough,” Smith said.
The trial resumed today

NORFOLK WOMAN PLEADS GUILTY IN DEATH OF 10-MONTH-OLD

March 11, 2009, NORFOLK–Ten-month-old Miracle Grace Bryant’s bones showed through her skin.
Dehydration had forced her to suck her tongue so hard that she raised purple welts. Insect bites covered her face.
Doctors at Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center tried for two hours to resuscitate Miracle on April 8, prosecutor Jill Harris said Tuesday. But Miracle’s starvation and neglect had gone on too long – she weighed just 9 pounds, far less than a girl her age should weigh.
Meanwhile, Miracle’s twin sister, Heaven LeeAnna, weighing just 7 pounds, clung to life at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. Nurses at DePaul had taken Heaven LeeAnna from her mother, Heaven K. Smith, when they saw her trying to feed the child a bottle of curdled, rancid formula, Harris said.
Heaven LeeAnna also suffered from pronounced starvation and neglect – she was so dehydrated she could not form tears. Heaven LeeAnna spent weeks in the hospital.
Smith, 22, pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder and felony child neglect. She is scheduled to be sentenced in July.
Her husband, Corey Bryant, 22, who also faces murder and neglect charges, is scheduled to be tried in July.
In her statement to police, Smith told detectives that she fed the girls several times a day, sometimes adding baby cereal to their bottles of formula to help them gain weight. She said the girls had begun to lose weight about a week and a half before Miracle’s death.
But Harris told Circuit Court Judge Jerrauld Jones that a forensic pediatrician determined that the neglect had gone on more than five months.
Police say they think Smith left the babies alone in “bouncy chairs” while she worked. Doctors could not unbend Heaven’s arms and legs.
Detectives found rank conditions in Smith’s apartment in the 8700 block of Monitor Way – hundreds of soiled diapers next to the babies’ crib, moldering baby food; the thermostat set to about 55 degrees. Harris said both girls had body temperatures in the 80s when they arrived at the hospital.
Despite Smith’s assertion that she had picked the girls up that day from a baby sitter, detectives could not find her.
Detectives did find a woman who had baby-sat the girls for a short time previously, Harris said, long before their health declined. The woman told police she worried when Smith stopped bringing the girls to her, because they were always hungry when they arrived.
The woman was so concerned that she called Smith’s Navy command and was told the babies had gone to live with their grandparents.
Harris said the babies had lived with Bryant’s mother for a time. Harris showed Jones pictures of the girls taken by the grandmother when she brought them home in November 2007.
“They were healthy, happy, and frankly very beautiful,” Harris said.
In the video-recorded statement, Detective Vic Powell confronts Smith after she says she did not take the girls to the doctor despite their weight loss.
“Miracle – she starved to death,” Powell says in the video.
“I know what I did,” Smith replies. “I did feed her.”
“There’s no way,” Powell said.
Harris noted to Jones that Smith showed no emotion during the interview until Powell told her she was charged with murder.
Harris said Heaven LeeAnna has recovered and now lives with her grandmother. She is walking and talking, Harris said, but will likely have developmental delays

No problem. :) I was following this story since it came out on the news in VA. I was in the Navy, stationed in Norfolk so it was really close to home. My son was about 4 months around that time and it just really broke my heart. I’m really glad that they are both going to have to serve time behind bars. Now I wonder what the Navy is going to do to them both.

Well, gang, still no response from OS3 Fucknut. He was logged into myspace yesterday… I encourage individuals to call his listed office number (which I discovered on Navy Knowledge Online) and speak to his supervisor. He is a disgrace to the Navy, a disgrace to his shipmates, and a disgrace to the woman who gave birth to his sorry ass. He is a disappointment in every way. After some more digging, I found that I know his supervisor from a previous duty station. He let me know that Petty Officer Dipshit loudly proclaims that he is wrongly accused. Unfortunately, the Navy has not had the good judgement to let him go.

I remember readingthis story a while ago- and how much it made me cringe then. Now I have a baby of my own (he weighed more at birth than either of these kids did at 10 months) I actually feel physically ill. And murderously angry. I want to take this woman apart- dad too, don’t get me wrong- but I just do not get how a mother could do this to her hildren. These children suffered terribly, and it makes my stomach turn.
Mothers (and fathers too, but especially mothers) who kill their children, are in my opinion, rabid animals who need to be put down. If you’re incapable of just simply maintaining the life of your own child, what kind of contribution can you honestly make to the world?????

I live a few miles away from where they lived. It is so sad that these babies had to go through this. I am glad that at least one survived. What bothers me is that she knew she ws depressed. Why not do the adoption anyway? If he had any sense, he could have work his way up the ranks to mke more pay. And if you wanna go out you can…just get a decent babysitter!
All of those things require thinking about someone other than yourself… Apparantly these two shitstains lacked that ability. I truely do hope they get shanked in prsion. With something rusty. Fuckers.
What bothers me the most about this story (other than the obvious of it even happening!) is that they were able to recieve almost ENDLESS help through the military. Not just health care but marriage counseling, parenting classes (which they could’ve started doing the DAY they found out she was pregnant!), treatment for a myriad of things including postpardum depression – not to mention any other help they may have needed even as far as help buying baby formula.
It breaks my heart that anyone would see neglect as the best option when there are thousands of couples who’d love nothing more than to have a child. If they were so concerned of what their families’ thought – perhaps they should’ve given their own families the option of stepping in and taking over if it was too much for them.
I say it all the time – making kids might be fun – but raising them is WORK. And if you aren’t prepared to work you shouldn’t be playing. I hope the surviving girl is able to go to a loving home where she will recieve enough love and care for her AND her deceased sibling.

My wife is going to bring a little boy into our world very shortly…. and we are both thrilled with the million and one little things that must be done to make my son’s life (and ours!) easier. The things like; plenty of diapers, lots of wipes, endless hours of advice from well-wishers, good, solid furniture, a well maintained home…. and so on! I am an older man and I honestly thought children were out of my cards, but then…. BAM! Here he comes! My point is…. I’m so thrilled!!!!! I can’t wait to meet him and show him all that I know. I’m a man of many faults, but I hope I can be the best that I can. I have traveled the world, I speak three languages but this little boy knocks me to my knees with happiness!!!!

Honestly I think they are wired wrong-most mothers and fathers would willingly die if it would save their child’s life-and most female animals will fight to protect their young, but I think you get some people as well as animals that are wired wrong and don’t have that nurturing protective gene. You see every day strangers willing to risk their lives to save kids from fires, car wrecks, drownings but they wouldn’t take care of their own child, I don’t know how anyone could watch a child starve

My gosh, my son weighed more at birth than those two little girls did at 10 months! As Millie said, the military has all kinds of *free* resources and counseling available, they were just too damn lazy to do it. I call bullshit on the depression excuse. My wife suffered from post-partum depression after our daughter was born, but as never as “off the chain” as this bitch was.

Yeah this post-partum bullshit is just that….UTTER BULLSHIT.
I went through it myself, as did Moop, and many other women. But you fucking deal with it and move on. You seek help and you get help. My husband and mother-in-law were life savers during this time when all I did was breastfed and cry…but notice what I said, I breastfed. Never once did I think about pulling some bullshit like this walking tampon did…never even occured to me, or any other mother I have spoken to about PPD.
Had postpartum depression really badly, especially with my first daughter. All it did to me was make me drink a lot of beer, sob, and lay around the house in my pajamas. Didn’t starve the kid.
At the time I had my first daughter I was the typical college student. Starving. I worked my ass off until the tuesday before I had her- she was born on a saturday. I was single. I was especially sick during my pregnancy, admitted to the hospital multiple times. As much grief as that munchkin gave me while she was in my belly, the second she was out I loved her beyond words. Something in me morphed. I was a mom, no longer was I that broke single college student. I never once collected a dime from any kind of aid. This was my responsibility; I went back to school when she was a week and a half and back to work when she was 3 weeks. There were so many times when I had to make a choice- something for her or something for me. Did I need gas for the car worse than she needed diapers. Did she need formula more than I needed a loaf of bread. No. I can’t tell you how many times I didn’t eat for days on end so she could. Depression? Yeah I’ve been there done that. Raising a child alone- yeah its tiring and depressing. However the gift you get in your child makes up for anything bad. The fact that she is from a rape made the depression so much worse; but you deal with it. Nothing you go through is a childs fault and therefore the blame shouldn’t be directed at them. I tire of reading about depression this and depression that- that’s just a scapegoat anymore. If you fail to feed your children but continue to feed yourself- that’s laziness not depression. Probably add selfishness in there too. If you stash your living breathing child in a carseat- so you can go out to dinner or a movie, how are you depressed if you’re going out to enjoy a movie? anyway that’s not depression that’s stupid cheap selfish selfcentered ignorance. If you drug your infant with cold medicine that’s just dispicable. My point is depression isn’t this dynamic duo’s problem. Their problems have a much less clinical diagnosis- worthless pieces of gutter trash.

I didn’t feel any hate. The Navy call me a fat ass, but most of my weight is in the chest and ass (sucks to be me.) I’m not fat, I am stocky. 5′ 2″ and a 164 pounds of mostly muscle. I just had the bad luck to be cursed with a big ass. 28 inch waist, lean from the hips down, and from the armpits up, and I still have to get tape measured for the Physical Readiness Test. Too bad. Being a woman really sucks ass sometimes :(

These two deserve eye for an eye justice. They should be forced to suffer the way those sweet little girls suffered. what kills me with these fucking bullshit retards who starve their kids is how EASY it is too feed a baby or a child. I mean, Formula? Two scoops from a can added to water for the love of GOD. My kids are ten months and one day apart, and as any mom knows on here, that means 20 months of near continual pregnancy and exhaustion. One of the things that really kills me about this is if the dumb cow had spent time taking care of those two sweet girls, the smiles and grins she would’ve gotten from them, the warmth and joy that comes from bonding with your babies might have been the antithesis for her “depression.”

those who truly love their kids wouldnt let anything stand in the way of taking care of them and providing basic need fulfillment. she was too lazy or too stupid to get birth control, then even more lazy and stupid to care for her babies. granted, yeah, its harder with two, especially twins, but its still manageable. i have a friend who has a 2 year old and 3 years old, i have a 2 year old and 2 month old, care for them mostly myself cuz the hubby works long hours and is a Marine, but never at any time will i “forget” or “be too depressed” to adequately love and care for my kids. these two need to have forced sterilizations without anesthesia and then starved to death as well

The abuse started before OS3 Bryant went out on his piddly-ass three week cruise. He and his woman left the children STRAPPED IN THEIR CAR SEATS when they went to work each day. The military provides on-base child care. The costs are different depending on rank. If I, as a single mother, could afford to use the Child Development Center, then they damn well could have, too.
It is my duty as a Senior Petty Officer to point out his flaws. It is my duty as a Master-At-Arms to defend the weak and helpless, to serve and protect those that need shelter from harm. Corey and Heaven are both fully culpable for the torture these two precious girls suffered. THAT’S why we are coming down hard on Corey.
If I remember the story right, he instructed her……
1. To feed them water… because they looked dehydrated…
2. To keep them covered – to hide their rashes which would show neglect..
He KNEW and he told her to cover it up!

However, I still find him to be MORE culpable for his actions, primarily because of his rank. For someone to reach third class, they have to show at least SOME potential for leadership. In addition, he is SUPPOSED to be an Operational Specialist, which requires a security clearance.
Heaven is just a Ship Serviceman Seaman. The E3 and below are not held to the same standard as Petty Officer and above (Corey is an E4.) They are not given the same responsibilities.
I will add a few more services the Military offers new parents:
1. Fleet and Family Support Center- Has a supply of breast pumps, lists of child care facilities, a direct connection to the Department of Social Services (WIC, Food Stamps, etc)
2. Navy Marine Corps Relief Society- Give Layettes free of charge to new mothers
3. Approved In-Home Child Care- Military wives who have nothing better to do than care for your child while you are at work for a nominal fee
4. Base Fire Department- In case you decide you don’t want Junior. You can drop him/her off at the fire department, just like in the civilian world.
5. Maternity/Paternity Leave- New mothers/fathers get 45 days of paid leave that does not come out of their regular leave. Sometimes, the mother takes hers first and the father takes his right after.
They are both EQUALLY at fault. The abuse started well before Corey left. He had a month and a half off to spend with his babies when they were born. Equal guilt for Heaven and Corey.

What they are questioning is why you have a problem with us discussing the case. Everything being discussed here has been verified by the media, and I am assuming Max. We don’t have to know them as people to know they’re fuck ups. People don’t just accidentally starve their children, it doesn’t happen in one day. It was an ongoing process, that in and of itself proves what everyone is saying is true. The fact that they didn’t see anything wrong with continuing to torture an infant shows exactly what they were. There is no need to have known them aside from that because nothing, including sainthood, would make them better people.

Max, I spoke with a Yeoman stationed in Norfolk. She wishes to remain nameless, however she was kind enough to give me the information I asked for. Corey Bryant, formerly an Operational Specialist, Third Class, was formally dishonorably discharged from the United States Navy roughly around June. Heaven Smith, formerly a Shipserviceman, Seaman, was formally dishonorably discharged around the same time. I love my job, Max, it requires me to be in a place where I can access anything I need whenever I need it, even if it is a tiny little piece of information. And you know? Having a shining reputation for following orders and only using excessive force once in five years really helps.

Okay, last time I am posting on these good for nothing lousy excuses for humanity. I have all the resources I need to know that Corey is NOT BEING BACKED BY THE NAVY. The Navy does not condone the abuse of any human or denial of such by any of its personnel. mysterygirl and smarter than you can say what they wish. I stand firm in the knowledge that the only people who know more about the inner workings of the military are my superiors, not some silly trolls looking for a fight.
I have proudly served My Navy for five, almost six years. I have been a Military Police Officer for ALL of those years. Believe it or not, I have access to the police reports. I have read first hand accounts of what was encountered in the Bryant/Smith household. Puh-lease, don’t tell me Corey had nothing to do with it.
Oh, by the way, mystery girl? Corey is no longer on the Navy Knowledge Online website, that’s a site that the ENTIRE NAVY is registered on. Heaven is NO LONGER on there, either. That can mean one thing and one thing only, they have been or are in the process of being dishonorably discharged.
I actually feel bad for you, mysterygirl and smarter than you, you poor delusional soul. For future reference, read the Sailor’s Creed (posted above for your convenience) and tell me that either Corey or Heaven’s actions toward those innocent children were within that oath.

Ugh, I am kicking myself as I type this, but it has become an obsession to make the public fully aware of what the Navy does with little screw-ups like Bryant and Smith.
The YN3 that I spoke with? She’s a sweetheart, a real peach. She knows the inside and out of her job, and part of that includes surrendering information to the Master-At-Arms when they politely request it. I am going to send her a fruit basket, I swear. She is going to send me some more information that is considered pertinent to my needs. (I also teach evidence collection and UCMJ classes on reserve weekends, so I have to know my shit.) So Corey and Heaven are going to be forever enshrined in a dull and dreary Navy MA training powerpoint all about the signs of child abuse and the proper responses.

Yes Becky, it is a fack that threats made over the Internet are stupid and meaningless. Another fack is that since I have Dustin’s IP address (yes Dustin, we log IP’s on this website), I could find out where he lives in about thirty seconds – not to mention the fack that he was stupid enough to actually identify himself. Of course, he hasn’t got a clue who I am, and really no easy way of finding out. By the time he did, I’d have found him, stalked him, and if I was as crazy as I used to be, pulled up next to his car at a light, or walked up behind him in a crowd, and blown his head clean off.
That’s what happens to dumb fucks who make threats on the internet – I’m giving you a hypothetical situation, but there are plenty of crazy people with computer skills and a gun who could pull this off, and you only need to run into one of them.
