Abneris Santiago and Alfred Santiago
Who hasn’t heard of Dallas, Texas? It’s a major southern metropolis, there is an iconic 80’s television show named after it, it is the home of the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Dallas Stars. Historically, it was the center of the oil and cotton industry in America. Sounds like a nice place, huh? Abneris Santiago and Alfred Santiago (no relation) thought the same thing.
Abneris, 30, and her live-in boyfriend, Alfred, 37, moved to Dallas from Florida, in search of the American Dream; tagging along for the ride were Abneris’ daughter, her two sons, and a daughter the couple made together. Forgive me for saying, but I think their sights were set a little lower than the typical “American Dream as they took up residence at a Budget Suites of America extended stay hotel, directly off a major freeway in Dallas. The family stayed in the confined quarters for just about a year, until the beginning of July, when their journey together came to an abrupt end.
Abneris’ brother, Abner, stated he came to Texas from Ohio at the urging of his mother after she had a phone conversation with his sister. The mother had grave concerns about her family from the minute Abneris hooked up with Alfred and moved away from her; she was raising her grandchildren and was afraid of the kind of care they were receiving now that they were gone. Abner arrived just in time to catch the discovery of the torture being inflicted on his niece and nephews.
Abneris Santiago phoned police in Dallas on this morning of July 2, 2009 requesting help to remove her children and belongings from the hotel room. Upon police arrival, Abneris knocked on the door to motel room 2019B requesting admittance from Alfred who was in the room. She would claim later that he refused to let her have a key to the room. Mr. Santiago opened the door, surprised to find the little party standing on the other side of it. Based on information stated in the official affidavit filled out by the police on scene, the room was kept immaculately. There was a healthy one year old girl present in the room, sleeping in a crib. Police continued checking around the room; that’s when they found the Santiago’s’ dirty little secret.
Locked in the bathroom were three emaciated, underweight, malnourished children. There was an 11 year old girl who weighed 59 pounds, a 10 year old boy who weighed 58 pounds 
and was covered in bruises, and a 5 year old boy who weighed a whopping 29 pounds. I checked into this and found out that the average weight for an 11 year old girl is 79.2 pounds. The average weight for a 10 year old boy is 70.4 pounds, and for the average 5 year old boy it is 41.8 pounds. The Santiago children sure seemed to be lacking a little bit. Police officers noted all three children were suffering from serious physical, mental, and emotional neglect. Each of the children displayed obvious signs of the neglect including; dry and swollen lips, protruding ribs, and sunken cheeks and eyes.
Children’s Protective Services were called in immediately and workers tried to feed the children for the first time in Jesus only knows how long, unfortunately, their tummies were so empty they threw up their first taste of food. The children were removed from their dire surroundings and evaluated by a doctor; all three of the children were hospitalized for 10 days. As soon as they were released from the hospital, the three joined their sister in temporary foster care. The 10 year old boy was placed back in the hospital at a later date for some additional problems he was experiencing.
Police cars and ambulances tend to bring out the rubbernecker in all of us; and the guests at this hotel were no different. A few guests told reporters that they had seen the couple around the grounds of the hotel, which had several apartment complex like buildings, but none of them were ever aware there were children with them. The seemed to have done quite a good job of concealing the children and their hideous ways.
While in the hospital, the 11 year old girl admitted to police that she had been sexually abused by her mother’s boyfriend while he was in charge when her mother was at work. She graphically described the rapes and told officers about the oral sex she was forced to perform on Mr. Santiago. The girl was threatened that she would be killed if she ever told her mother about the abuse. Police and CPS workers also learned that the children were locked in that tiny bathroom day- in day-out for almost a year; the only time they were let out was when Alfred showered. Other forms of torture were regular beatings and irregular feedings; these activities weren’t limited to the little girl.
Abneris and Alfred were arrested from their hotel room. Abneris (Her Arrest Record) was charged with injury to a child and is being held on a $50,000 bond. Her attorney, James Jamison, stated that her initial court appearance on the charge will not be until August 3, 2009. Alfred (His Arrest Record) was charged with aggravated sexual assault and continuous sexual abuse and is being held on a $125,000 bond. His attorney, Richard Carrizales, declined to make a statement. I am glad these two have both been charged; but, I am seriously wondering why some are missing?
Abneris’ attorney, Mr. Jamison, claims that she has made mistakes in the past about her male companions and he believes that Alfred was controlling her and her children. He also claims that she was afraid of what would happen if she came forward about the abuse. By her having made mistakes in her past and not learning from them; shouldn’t she be facing more charges? The fact that she continuously got in the same kind of relationships proves she didn’t give a damn about bettering herself or for providing a better life for her kids.
She was afraid to report the abuse? Sure she was. I totally believe that. But as afraid as she was, she knew her children were stuffed in a bathroom and being starved for a year; any other mom would have taken a couple smacks to make sure her kids were fed or a couple of punches to try to get them somewhere safe. Instead, she went to work and came home. She fed her youngest daughter, her spawn with the devil himself. She slept in a bed probably not 10 feet away from where her kids were sandwiched together in misery. Afraid, sure? But, she was also indifferent to the pain being felt by her children.
Lawyers for the hotel have stated that there was no reason to believe anything was going on in the room; they had received no complaints from other guests. The hotel offered a maid service for guests that was available for an extra charge. It is not clear if any staff ever entered the room.
I couldn’t imagine being locked in a whole house for a year, let alone a room. Those kids are a helluva lot tougher than I am. Hopefully, with some counseling and having their mother banished from them for life, these kids will become something great.
Editor’s Note: And if this story wasn’t already aggravating enough, Alfred Santiago gave an interview with the Dallas Morning New where he claimed it was HE who was being abused, not the children who were starved and locked in the bathroom for a year. Seriously. Check this guy out:
The man accused of shutting three kids inside a bathroom for months, starving them and repeatedly raping one, said Wednesday that he – not the children – is the victim.
“The one who is being disrespected right now is I, because I’m the one who’s being abused,” said 37-year-old Alfred Santiago during an interview inside the Dallas County Jail.
In Wednesday’s interview, Santiago accused the children of, among other things, raping babies and pouring urine on his infant daughter.
“What I was doing is protecting my baby daughter from her (his girlfriend’s) kids,” Santiago said. “What I did was I did not leave my daughter out of my sight.”
At the same time, Santiago said it was his girlfriend, not him, who kept her kids shut inside the bathroom. Authorities say Santiago stayed home during the days while his girlfriend worked at a barbecue restaurant.
But Alfred Santiago said Wednesday the children had access to “mountains of food,” claiming authorities had photos to prove it.
“They were skinny because they were not eating the food,” he said. “I was feeding them, but they were not eating the food.”
He accused reporters who probed him further of being out to get him, saying society is generally biased against men: “I’m a man in the United States. We’re treated very unfairly when it comes to a woman.”
“If people will start looking for what they need to be looking for,” he said, “they will find the truth.”
I’m telling you people, some folk have no shame, and no respect for the other guy’s intelligence. How does a person like Alfred say these kinds of things with a straight face, while all the time knowing he’s lying his ignorant, child raping ass off. Also there are people who just love to have – kids, animals, cars, whatever. It does not matter what the “it” is, just as long as they have. BUT the problem is that they d not take care of their “its” once the “its” are not as fun, tooo expensive or get in the way of aquiring other “its”.

This story sounds like a “trailer trash” version of “Flowers in the Attic” (Not to insult all people that live in trailer parks) but the fact is that these children were visible every day as they had to be “moved out” of the bathroom so that Alfred could shower – it’s not like they coud be as easily “forgotten” as the children in the attic were in the story…….
I could easily “forget” these two in my lower garage – I actually had homeless people living in my garage at one time and never knew it at the time!!!!

I have several tattoos, but I also work a GREAT full-time job, attend school with a 4.0 GPA, and I have two kids I would give the world to. My children have a fantastic, abuse-free life. Remember, doctors, lawyers and professional-looking people abuse children too; not just (what was that, “scumbags”?) people with tattoos. Grow up!

It doesn’t sound as though they’re being charged with very much at all. Why aren’t they being charged with attempted murder? If these children hadn’t been rescued when they had been, they’d all be dead by now. People get decades in jail for drug offenses and white-collar related crimes–shmucks who torture children get off with maybe 6 years.

I just want to update this story, as there were preliminary hearings on August 3rd.
Judge Terry McVea ruled that there is sufficient evidence to send the case to a Grand Jury seeking indictment.
Prosecutors will also be amending the case to include 2 additional charges against Abneris. I will let you know exact charges when I find out what they are. I’m sure it has something to do with testimony from a detective in the case concerning the molestation of the 11 year old girl, it seems that she had told her mother about the rapes and that it had been going on for 3 years. Abneris shook her head no at this information. She refused to make a comment to the media and has turned down multiple requests for jail house interviews.
It is expected that the Grand Jury will have the case by the end of August.
Sources have revealed that the severity of the childrens condition upon admittance was life threatening. The children were in such a state of starvation that their brains had atrophied.
Abneris’ attorney stated that he expected everything that happened in court and filed a motion for the state to disclose its case.
Alfreds attorney declined to comment, but prosecutors have stated they will be filing 3 additional charges against him, including some for injury to a child.
As always I will keep this story updated when I hear something new.

I wonder why she didn’t leave them with her mother, one of the articles that I read said that the grandmother basically parented the kids before the mother took them off to Texas. Also, all three had different fathers, so sad that not even one out of three fathers tried to track down his child. Thank God they were found while they could still be saved.
Well I doubt much blame can be placed on the father’s of the children. I mean, with a woman like that the father could be anyone. They’ll have to give paternity tests to half the country to track down all the fathers.

Actually, her family is pretty apalled at what she allowed to happen, and were the ones to instigate an investigation into it. They live in Florida and are trying to get custody of the children once they have undergone some serious evaluations.
being able to eat is a necessity, a right as a human being that even the most heinous of criminals gets. that is absolutely ridiculous, and i am shocked at how many of these cases I hear about, let alone ones i haven’t. i feel no pitty for either of the adults… ill be damned if ANY man keeps food from my children- i’d stab a muther effer and leave his ass… eff that they’re both lying.
Actually April I think the most heinous of criminals gets video games, work out equipment, showers, food and a whole lot more but I understand your point. The only good thing to come of this is that the children were found alive. Hopefully (and this isn’t just lip service) there is some sort of rehabilitation that works for them and not a behavior is learned situation where they grow up to do the same as this POS!

i am just sickened. poor children, what kind of torture did they go through. the little girl was probably raped then thrown back into the bathroom with her brothers while in immense physical and emotional pain. everyone was helpless. they will all have major issues from a. being abused and b. watching their siblings being abused and not being able to do a damn thing about it. hell is too generous for this man and the mother deserves absolutely no better, putting a penis in front of her own flesh and blood.

this story bothers me more than most of the heinous stories on this site … i think it is the smug look on that disgusting woman’s face. this story is emblematic of the total failure of our society; we reward the stupid and fecund, and penalize all the hardworking decent people in the world with higher taxation to support them. we should be able to summarily shoot them instead of clogging up the courts with their bullshit.
Who are the 6 r-tards that voted (No) on the poll above, love to hear your argument to why the mother that sat by for a year and did nothing, your telling me in that years time she couldn’t take her children and leave; oh she was scared, I don’t buy it and neither will the judge. I work at the hospital where these children were brought after they were found, and though we see every level of depravity known to man, the visual of these babies was enough to haunt even the most hardened, jaded, “i’ve seen it all” cynic. It’s hard to process things this vile… impossible to wrap your brain around stuff you just aren’t supposed to see. I can’t even imagine having to actually bear this kind of torture. I pray for the successful recovery of these poor babies.
I’d also like to give mad props to the uncle, Abner, who drove from Ohio to Texas because he and the rest of his family sensed soemthing was wrong. So often we hear about family turning a blind eye or making excuses for these scumbags, and it’s refreshing to see heroism in action. It must have been hard for him to feel completely helpless when she took the children away and put them in a bad situation, but he let his beter judgment prevail, and though wasn’t able to spare all suffering, he undoubtedly saved their lives.

It never ceases to amaze me how these attorney’s can argue with a straight face that crap they argue-I don’t care if she was abused-she left during the day to go to a job-I would guess (sarcasm here) that she had access to a phone or a co worker who could have called the cops, she could have asked the motel management to call the cops, another guest to dial 911 on a cell phone, or ran into freaking traffic to get help if she would have wanted to but this stupid bitch just didn’t care enough about her kids to help them. Abneris and Alfred were both indicted on Wednesday by a Dallas Grand Jury.
Each defendant was indicted on 3 counts of injury to a child. Each charge could get the duo 5 years to life in prison.
Alfred was also indicted on a charge of continuous sexual abuse which carries a minimum 25 year prison sentence.
The furnace is too good for these two shitbags.

Abneris Santiago does NOT deserve to be referred to as a mother! A mother is someone who puts their children’s needs/wants/well-being before their own needs/wants/well-being. Abneris Santiago clearly did not do this…..she allowed her children to suffer when she clearly had ample opportunities to stop this situation long ago. This weak woman uses the excuse that she was scared to justify her reasoning for not trying to get her children out of this situation and away from this monster. I don’t care how scared she may have been she had children that depended on her and she failed them repeatedly. She has proven that she is NOT a mother…….she is a breeder. Breeders can pump out children, but that does not mean that they can be a parent. I hope she rots for the horror that she allowed this children to endure.

My heart aches for the horror that these children experienced at the hands of a sadistic bastard and a feeble minded breeding machine. Sexual abuse and physical abuse is something you never get over, but you learn to move forward because you have to in order to survive. I hope that these children are given the support and encouragement that they need to heal as much as possible from this trauma. These babies deserve so much more out of life than the suffering that they have known!

As I sit here in my cushy dispatcher chair and tell people where to go and how to get there, I reflect. I reflect on the many blessings I have had and my daughter has had. I think about how many times I could have gone down the wrong path and been possibly featured on this site. I think about how damned lucky I am I didn’t stay with the abusive bastard that fathered my child. I think about how much it took to get me from shy teenager to in-control Master-At-Arms Second Class in the Navy.
And then I stop… and ask myself what all these people featured on pysih have in common? What is the one thing that binds them all together? Lack of discipline, lack of motivation, lack of intestinal fortitude. Anybody, ANYBODY, can rise above poor parenting, poor upbringing, poverty in general. It takes real men and women to rise above their challenges. Any idiot can be a gang-banger or a low-life whore. It takes courage and a positive mentality to rise above.
You make life what you want it to be. Life doesn’t mold you, your surroundings don’t make you who you are. YOU are in control of your life path and only YOU can decide what kind of human you are going to be. Low-life or success? Your decision.
