TEXAS MOTHER GETS 99 YEARS FOR MUTILATING SON

A Houston-area mother convicted of mutilating her infant by cutting off his genitals two years ago was sentenced Monday to 99 years in prison.
But minutes after the jury’s sentence was read, Katherine Nadal, 28, yelled out that she did not hurt her son, prompting the boy’s father to storm out of the courtroom.
Jurors deliberated for two hours Monday night before returning the sentence, which also included a $10,000 fine. The same jury had convicted her last week of first-degree felony injury to a child.
The jurors chose among possible sentences ranging from probation to life in prison. Nadal, who shook her head as the jury foreman read the sentence, will have to serve at least 30 years before she is eligible for parole.
Prosecutors asked for life in prison. Nadal’s attorneys did not request a specific sentence, instead asking the jury to not punish her out of hate or revenge.
Nadal had claimed the family dog, a 6- to 7-pound dachshund named “Shorty” was responsible for mutilating her then-5-week-old son, Holden Gothia, as he slept in his parent’s bedroom in March 2007 at their suburban Houston apartment.
But prosecutors said she was high on drugs when she mutilated her son with an unknown sharp instrument. Authorities say Nadal, who had prior drug arrests, tested positive for cocaine, methadone and Xanax after the attack.
Holden survived, but the severed body parts were never found.
After the sentence was announced, Holden’s paternal aunt, Patches DeShazo, who has custody of the now 2-year-old boy, read a victim impact statement in the courtroom.
“I am thankful by time you are eligible for parole you will be beyond childbearing years. It makes me crazy to this very day to hear you say I did not hurt him,” DeShazo said as she read her statement.
That prompted Nadal to yell back from the table where she sat with her defense attorneys: “I failed him. I did not hurt him.”
The boy’s father, Camden Gothia, then stood up and yelled to Nadal, “You abused him when he was in the womb,” a reference to Nadal having taken drugs when she was pregnant with Holden. Gothia then left the courtroom.
DeShazo and her husband were given custody after his parents relinquished their rights. His father sees him regularly.
After the hearing, prosecutor Tammy Thomas told reporters that Nadal will never admit what she did.
“I don’t know if this is justice to merit the damage,” a teary-eyed Thomas said. “This is as close as we can get.”
Allen Isbell, one of Nadal’s attorneys, said he was disappointed that the sentence was “so long.”
During closing arguments in the punishment phase of the trial, Thomas told jurors that Nadal had sentenced her child to a life of pain and suffering. “She took his identity as a human being and either flushed it or threw it in a trash can,” Thomas added.
Doctors testified that he faces years of surgeries and counseling.
Nadal’s attorneys told jurors that nothing they did would help Holden.
“This jury must punish Katie Nadal. That’s your job. But what is appropriate? I hope you don’t do it out of hate or revenge,” defense attorney Skip Cornelius said.

How can you try to carry on such a blatant LIE for so long? And you know it kind of irks me that Camden Gothia is calling her out on all this only after his son almost died. Um, hello. You chose to stay with a woman who was hurting your baby by using drugs while she was pregnant and then left her alone with him while she was high. Did you expect any of that to have a good outcome?
I’m sorry, I feel bad for the guy, but he had many opportunities to protect his son and it didn’t happen. I’m glad they both gave up their rights.
There is not much one can do as a mna when a woman is abusing a baby still in the womb. Piss off the fetus carrier and she can easily have an abortion. The law is very fuzzy at the point of the baby still being in the womb.
Some people in the Obama admin see a baby of 1 year old as a form of a fetus………..
I am glad that the aunt agrees with the sentence.
This is the tpe of person who needs to be spayed, but as long as she’s not allowed access to sperm, no soul will have to enter the world through her legs and into a hell.
While there will never be any real justice for the child, hopefully the sentence will be carried out in a manner which does not allow her to harm anyone else again.

You bring up some very valid points, one being about the abortion.
Now I don’t now if Holden was a planned baby, a happy “accident”, or whatever. I also do not know if the mother was going to her OB monthly and weekly as she should have been, or if the OB ( if there was one ) knew this “mother” was using drugs. But what recourse does a father have in this situation ? That is my question. Aside from the very obvious…DON’T HAVE SEX WITH DRUG ADDICTED WOMEN WHO COULD POTENTIALLY BECOME PREGNANT WITH YOUR CHILD…OR IF YOU DO, DO NOT LEAVE THAT DRUG ADDICT ALONE WITH THE BABY.
- I think though if as a society we expect men to pay child support and/or care for their children the old fashioned way ie..actually being a father and living in the same home with the baby and the mother, then we should also demand that fathers have more rights no matter how old their child is while still in the womb. And that includes whether or not the woman should be able to abort.
He could have reported her to the police and she could have been supervised. But where there is a will there is a way and she probably would have gotten her much needed drugs somehow. I guess there is no real recourse.

99 years seems appropriate to me, despite the life-long damage that she inflicted upon her son. It pains me to imagine how difficult his life is going to be.
Beyond that, I don’t have much to add. This is such a tragic story. As some of you on this site well know, I am very seldom rendered speechless. But in all honesty, this story….besides anger and rage and sorrow for Holden’s future, I got nothing.
God, I just want to bash her face in! Regardless of whether or not she did it (and there’s very little doubt she did) that fucking smug, holier-than-thou look on her face is maddening. You know, if I hurt my child in a drug-induced frenzy the guilt would be so overwhelming I don’t think I’d be able to hold it in. People get accused of crimes that they did not commit all the time. Completely innocent parents are accused of molesting or abusing their children by overzealous social workers and other officials all too often. But these falsely accused parents don’t smirk and casually shake their heads when charges or sentences are read to them. They flip out. It is this woman’s behavior after her baby boy’s savage injury that is the most telling. I would be freaking out if my child had been even in a minor accident requiring surgery, much less having her genitals mutilated. What did Katherine do? She asked if she had time to go get a beer.

I was actually giddy when I read about her sentence. She won’t have an easy time in prison when word gets out about why she’s there. I wish there was an easy way to keep up with Holden’s progress.
Luckily, society is starting to turn around when it comes to how they treat people with ‘blurred’ gender. There’s more to being a man than having a penis. He’ll always be male, but he’ll never be a normal’ boy. Hopefully by the time he hits puberty, there will be stronger public support for people like him. There are already a lot of strong support networks in place, so at least there’s that.

Based on observation, Women prisoners are a LOT less sentimental about child harmers than Male prisoners… don’t precisely know why.

This truly is a very devastating story. As I was reading this story, I was picturing all of the things that awful woman took from this little boy that he doesn’t even realize yet. She not only took future children and sexual desire but the parts that struck me is that she took his self confidence when he gets older. This little boy is not even going to be able to change in the locker room with other boys or to experience the freedom of peeing on your first tree. This woman took Holden’s sense of stability. How do you know who you are if you don’t know what you are?

Did you even read the original article to this story? Maelstrom is exactly right. Medicaid was discussed many times, everyone expressed their outrage. Charities set up in for Holden were also listed. Perhaps you should do a bit more reading before coming here and calling someone a dumbass for having an opinion. Holden WILL likely suffer with identity issues his whole life.

Apart from that, we all know he’s not going to have a normal life. People will say and do a lot of ignorant things to and about him, and he will deal with it however he deals with it. Hopefully he will spend his more influential years with people who can teach him that love and self-worth aren’t centered below the waist, and that most people’s opinions aren’t worth the skin they’re expressed through.
Incidentally, there are plenty of ways to satisfy both a woman and a man that don’t involve the penis at all. There’s no reason his future loves have to be anything but ‘normal’ women and/or men.

There have been numerous studies conducted, and have proven that circumcision is not necessary. It is cosmetic. I was on medicaid when I had my son and medicaid wouldn’t cover. I thank goodness I had him February 14th (valentines baby boy) and had just received my income tax return, so I was able to pay the 500$ to have him circumcised. A very good friend of mine chose not to circumcise, her husband is intact as well. My husband was circ’d and I left the decision up to him. I felt that I wanted him to be like his Daddy. Since medicaid has stopped paying for it the numbers of uncircumcised babies has increased drastically.
I agree with VBecky and others that the boy may go on to live a fulfilling existence and a satisfying alternate-style sex life, even after this horrific and criminal disfigurement.
Note, however, that the removal of a male’s testes all but eliminates his sex drive and also causes severe hormonal changes, which affect not only physiology, but brain chemistry. He’ll need to take a cocktail of hormonal medications for the rest of his life if he wishes to develop as a (mostly) normal male human being.
Even so, as a child and teen, he will most likely suffer horribly from feelings of inadequacy and an inability to engage in normal puppy love relationships. Children are quite often very cruel to other children, especially children who are “different”… most of us here should know that.

My son had to have his testicles removed at birth and this baby will have to endure alot grief, like my son, not just having sex.
Without hormones they will not go thru puberty, their voice will not change, they may not reach their potential height, sometimes their arms look too long for their body. No bio children to love, cannot legally consumate a marriage, most likely not grow masculine body hair, may not reach potential upper body strength, maturity delays, and depression are all common occurance with castrated children.
Sometimes it takes years to get the hormone dosages correct and the hormones can cause severe agression and anxiety.
