As of the 8th of March, 2009, Kenneth Lopez and Danielle McCleary had been dating for about 3 months. They got along famously, like a matched set of knives, or possibly like two jars of pickle relish. Either way, they worked really, really well together and will probably be featured in some kind of parenting documentary at some point.
The couple had recently moved to Tampa, Florida from Illinois, taking up residence in room 108 at the Homestead Studio Suites hotel.
Living and travelling with Kenneth Lopez and Danielle McCleary were Danielle’s two children: a 3-year-old boy and 2-year-old Gabrielle Randel.
For some reason, Gabrielle cried a bit on the night of the 7th of March, 2009. Why, we don’t know.
It could have been related to the reason why Danielle McCleary had scribbled “DumbAss” on her older brother – or it might have been for some other reason. It doesn’t really matter.
But Gabrielle cried enough to seriously torque off Kenneth Lopez. Kenneth, applying those excellent parenting skills, slapped the toddler a bit and told her to shut up.
Gabrielle, like toddlers will do when they get spanked, cried some more.
This ticked off Mr. Lopez a bit more, who decided to take the discipline to a whole new level and brought out a bedsheet.
Once Gabrielle Randel was safely wrapped up in the sheet with her face and mouth covered, Kenneth Lopez took the toddler to pain school, beating and kicking the tot and generally inflicting the damage you’d expect a 21-year-old to be able to deliver to a 2-year-old girl who was wrapped up in a sheet Fortunately for Lopez, the tyke was under the sheet at the time of her beating and was unable to respond in like kind.
The results of the beating could have been featured on the next edition of “World’s most One-Sided Fights.” According to reports, Gabrielle Randel endured extensive blunt trauma to her forehead, a number of bruises and other marks scattered over her body (including a rather distinctive hand mark) and serious trauma to her genitalia.
Gabrielle Randel also experienced a shortness of breath, which quickly devolved into a total lack of breath. Danielle McCleary noticed her daughter’s unconscious and unresponsive condition when she returned to the suite. The whole “not breathing” thing evidently concerned Danielle enough that she called for emergency services.
Emergency personnel were impressed with Danielle’s penmanship in regards to how well she fit “DumbAss” on her son’s forehead. Penmanship is important, kids, don’t let your doctor fool you. Danielle later admitted that she had been the author.
The doctors at the local children’s hospital did what they could for the toddler, but Gabrielle Randel died later on that day, at around 1 in the afternoon.
Her brother hasn’t been handling his sister’s death well. According to officials, he has been having problems sleeping and has a bit of difficulty dealing with the fact that his little sister was mercilessly beaten to death by his mother’s boyfriend. According to his father, Michael Randel (who drove 17 hours straight to Tampa from his Texas home when he heard the news), the boy insists that his sister is still alive, using the definitive proof of pre-existing pictures of her and pointing out that, “Gabbie’s not dead.”
24-year-old Michael Randel told authorities that he had not seen his children in three months because Danielle and Kenneth had left town without telling anyone where they were going.
Kenneth Lopez is being held in jail without bail on a charge of aggravated child abuse, a charge which you’d expect to be upgraded to murder, especially since he admitted to the whole thing.
Danielle McCleary and Michael Randel have had a custody deal worked out for the 3-year-old by a judge. Michael gets to keep the boy for an extended period. Danielle has been allowed supervised visits, as long as she refrains from writing on her son again.
UPDATE: 05/05/2009 – Danielle McCleary Charged In Death Of 2-Year-Old Daughter
Danielle Nicole McCleary, 23, was arrested on April 3rd, 2009 and charged with aggravated child neglect, a second degree felony, and aggravated manslaughter, a first degree felony, according to the Hillsborough County sheriff’s office.
Sheriff’s reports say McCleary was present in the room and witnessed the binding, beating, and compression of Gabrielle Randel by her live-in boyfriend Kenneth Lopez.
Also, on March 19th, 2009 Kenneth G. Lopez was charged with First Degree Murder in addition to the original charge of Aggravated Child Abuse for the beating death of 2-year-old Gabrielle Randel.

I was a single mother to my first daughter for a couple years; and I cant say that Ive ever had a man over to my house when she was present. I dont care how lonely that made me, my daughter came first. I dont care what a man tells you; that he will be there or he loves you, or that hes a sane person–theres no telling and I absolutely refused to put my daughter at risk. Who knows he could have been a molester, a murderer, a rapist, a terrorist, or he could have had herpes. All things I didnt want to subject her to. I also didnt want her getting attached to people and then having them leave…imagine how hard that is on a little kid.
I guess my point is that it doesnt matter how hard it is; you still manage to put your kids first–not some dick (penis, weiner, wee-wee…whatever you call it). Hello, I am Michael, Bryan and Gabrielle’s father… There is alot more to this story than the press knows. Danielle and Kenny have been talking to each other off and on for over a year or so(which is the main reason for us splitting up). Danielle and Kenny one day(3 days before new years) decided to take the kids and move away and not tell me where they went. As anyone could imagine this tore me up. I did just about everything I could to try and find out where they were, but it wasnt enough. As soon as I got the call I left and drove 17 hours to tampa. As soon as I got to tampa, I got the worst call a parent could ever get, that my little girl didnt make it…
As far as Danielle working that night… She wasnt working… She and Kenny got into an arguement and she stepped out for a minute. When she returned she witnessed everything Kenny did to my angel… Whether she tried to stop him or not is uncertain(she tells me she tried). Danielle also told me that he has been abusing her(Danielle) for some time now and almost killed her a few times.
But anyway… all of this is just what I have been told by Danielle. I am still not sure what actually went on in that hotel that night. But the good news is.. that I finally have my baby boy home with me in texas where he belongs.
On another note… I personally hopes he gets out of jail very soon.. There are more people outside of jail that will grant him the death penalty than there are inside.. Me being the first in line.

Michael, I am so sorry for what you and your children faced, and I think you sound like a strong and loving influence for your son.
What your ex-wife did was so cruel and callous that, in my opinion, she does not deserve to ever see your son again. Ever. She deserves to be sitting in a jail cell. She sounds like she plays “victim” really well.. everyone should feel sorry for her because this scumball beat her up. Well, ok.. maybe.. if she hadn’t stolen your children from you and subjected them to this guy. It’s not about HER anymore… it’s about your babies.
Anyway Michael – please promise me that you will go get professional help for your boy. He is just a little guy, and he may seem like he just “forgets” it, but it is never really forgotten. You need to be sure that he doesn’t forget it.. that he never lets it go to his unconscious, because that’s where it can become destructive.
Your little boy is another victim, and while it is wonderful that he is unharmed (physically), the fact remains that he saw things that no child should ever see.

Im so sorry for your loss, and you were really brave to come here and read what was written–If I was in your shoes I dont think I could relive it.
What he just wrote makes the fact that charges werent filed against her even more unbelievable. For the plain and simple fact provided in this statement, “Danielle also told me that he has been abusing her(Danielle) for some time now and almost killed her a few times.
At the very least, WHY would she leave either one of those babies with him if he had ALMOST killed HER several times prior. Obviously, there is something wrong with this guy that he probably wasnt going to stop until he succeeded–by killing SOMEONE. She knew there was a possibility that something negative would happen.
She knew he had tendencies and she still left them with him. At the very least shes guilty of not providing adequate care or neglect.
There are many questions still going through my mind as well, and most of these questions will never get answered. I dont know what was going through his or her mind, but I wish I did. And I will never know what exactly went on that night, for the simple reason there are only 3 people that do know… 1. Kenny(and he better hope I never have the chance to ask him face to face) 2. Danielle- Not too sure what to believe from her right now 3. Bryan- I dont even want to ask him and put him through that again… But in time Kenny will get what is coming to him and me and Bryan will move on and live the best life we can together.

i had no idea this was your post michael but i am sorry for you loss and if she is christophers we will be pressing charges agenst danielle after some of the emails we got from her we are getting lawyers and its not to hurt you you are her daddy you were good to her and took care of her and no one will ever take that from you i tried being civil with you and her and its not worked all we needed was a noterized letter from her or you and you all said no so to put our minds and pain to rest we are going the legal way and we are sorry if that hurts you . we are incredably glad that your son is with you and will be happy and healthy and well taken care of but you know as well as we do that we tried through out her life to get the dna and danielle kept moving and changeing her number she even was so crule last sept to tell christopher he could come to tampa to see her if he stayed with her and did so and i could not come she is vandictive and well some day she will get what is comming to her .if she could of kept her legs closed from the begining and stayed faithfull to you we would not be here doing this today

Nearly a month after her 2-year-old daughter died, a woman was charged today with aggravated manslaughter of a child and aggravated child neglect.
Deputies say that when the girl, Gabrielle Randel, didn’t go to sleep easily last month, her mother’s boyfriend picked her up, wrapped her in a towel and began beating her. As Kenneth Lopez hit the tiny wrapped figure, Gabrielle stopped crying, authorities say.
She was eventually taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Lopez, 21, initially was charged with aggravated child abuse. He now is charged with first-degree murder, court records show.
Lopez is the live-in boyfriend of the girl’s mother, Danielle McCleary. She turned herself in to authorities this afternoon. Deputies say she was in the room when the beating happened but did nothing to stop it.
Her attorney, Brian Gonzalez, said he and McCleary were surprised with the extent of the criminal charges against her.
“The state’s theory under the circumstances is that she failed to protect her daughter from the act of her boyfriend,” he said. “I think certainly no one can really have an idea of what a situation is like until they sit in somebody’s shoes.
”
Gonzalez said McCleary is going to cooperate with the State Attorney’s Office “to try to get the guy who belongs in prison for this in prison – that being Mr. Lopez.
”
McCleary remains heartbroken by the death of her daughter, Gonzalez said. He said the charges against her are difficult for her to handle.
Between 1 and 4:52 a.m. March 8, Gabrielle’s hands and feet were bound in blankets, and Lopez beat and pinned her under a martial arts pad, an arrest report states. The girl suffered bruising to her head, torso, arms and legs.
Gabrielle’s cause of death was compression of chest and abdomen, and the manner of death was homicide, sheriff’s spokeswoman Debbie Carter said today.
McCleary told investigators she wasn’t there when the attack occurred and wasn’t sure what had happened to her daughter, but later said she witnessed the beating and didn’t step in because she was afraid of Lopez, Carter said.
The couple had been living in Room 108 of Homestead Inn at 5401 Beaumont Center Blvd. for about two weeks after moving from Illinois, the sheriff’s office said.
McCleary’s 3-year-old son was in the room during the beating, authorities said.
Lopez remains in Orient Road Jail, where he is being held without bail.
McCleary, 23, was arrested at 1:20 p.m. today and taken to Orient Road Jail.
Her bail was set at $15,000; she has since been released

I worked with Kenny for over two years. He was a good kid, he did what he was told. He was a tae kwon do instructor at a dojo in the area. I saw him there and he worked really well with kids. Well enough that I signed my son up to work with him because I saw how well he worked with my son. I met this girl awhile back. They were on and off again apparently because everything I keep reading says they have only been dating for three months. I didn’t like her at all. I remember asking Kenny why he would be with her. She smoked, drank, and she was just a rude person. Kenny didn’t do any of those things and he worked at a bar. I guess I didn’t know him as well as I thought I did.
Tae Kwondo instructor???!!! That just makes this all the more disgusting!!! My daughter has been taking Tae Kwondo for two years now, and she is several belts in, but not nearly close to a black belt, which is what *most* of the instructors are. Let me tell you that even at her level, some of the things they learn could be downright deadly in the wrong hands….

They are told not to use their art against others unless they are defending themselves, and though Kenny there might have just been administering a “good old ass whipping” or whatever, he knew that his strength and his blows would be more than inappropriate versus a small child! I know for a FACT that the master of my daughter’s place takes great care to not even accidentally tap any of the children during sparring. What a sick sick individual. My kids were enrolled in the dojo that Kenny instructed in. We are all in complete shock. The man described in this brutal murder is not the man we all knew. He was kind, helpful, respectful, patient and an all around nice young man. He spent so much time helping and teaching the children with such patience it is really frightful how much a person can change. I believe that people should always take responsibility for their actions and Kenny should pay dearly for this but I can’t help but wonder how he spiraled into this? Drugs? a woman? I wish he never met this woman and stayed close to and listened to the people who cared about him. We just can’t believe this, we pray for Gabrielle an innocent baby taken away so brutally and for Bryan and Micheal to heal in some way and to try to get to some normalcy in their lives. We also pray for Kenny and his family.

Our anger over this is justified. I’ve had the displeasure of interacting with Danielle several times, because she was cheating on her then-husband with my best friend. I could tell she was trouble back then… she smoked like a freaking chimney when she was pregnant and I never heard her speak unless she was complaining about something or screaming at someone.

yes we have spoken to lawyers and we were told to try to do things with out it going int court such as asking michael or danielle for a noterized dated letter to the M.E. office and we did she told us that he was nothing but a sperm donor and she wasnt about to do anyone any favors she was to worried about making sure “kenny fried” we then went to the lawyer again and he then told us wait for a bit to see what the veridict will be then to write the judge who passed the sentance with all the emails and such that we have from michael and her clearly saying he was the biological father and see if the judge will not sent and emergancy letter through to the m.e. and then if that dosent work to then go through getting lawyers both her in maryland where i am from and there in tampa but i fear we may not have the money for lawyers in two states . she is a evil woman and very much all about her . i hope she gets time and i hope my husband to be gets the peace he so badly needs and thank you for your kindness and i will as promised keep everyone up to date

Child abuse and murder is always horrendous to hear about. No one enjoys reading these stories or trying to sleep at night literally haunted by these children. However, ignoring or avoiding the problem doesn’t help either. And remember, you can be part of the solution or part of the problem.
As difficult as it might be to read these stories, we OWE it to the victims to hear them out and listen. When one imagines what they had to endure, whatever “suffering” we endure while reading is not even worth the mention.

Well, I suppose it may seen that way as a reader, sitting in the safety of ourown little homes, but I can guarantee that each child who has had the misfortune to end up on this site felt a very real and singular pain. This site generates a lot of debate about the laws of our country, it also gives angry citizens a place to vent and also be informed as to the fate of these sick perpetators, as has been pointed out by posters more eloquent than I, but there is something else it does for me, and maybe for a few others. It teaches temperance, especially with children. The stories I read on here remind me every single day of what kind of parent I don’t ever want to be. I never want to be the mom who “lost it,” or the mom who “looked the other way.” And these children’s stories inspire me to do better by my own two kids. I have never been so affected as I have been by this site, in that I now know what goes on it the world, and because of that knoweledge, I watch very closely who and what my kids are exposed to. We don’t live in a hobbit hole, but I know that I, and I alone as their mother, am resposible for their safety, security, and well being. I guess it’s my way of paying tribute to the kids I’ve read about on here. So, as sad as it is, I still bear witness.

You know I try to stay away from websites like this because reading about what I have already went through only make it worse. And let me tell you something Michelle, I may or may not have been Gabrielle’s biological father, but I did more than any man could probally say they have done for a child the did or didnt know was theirs. I was there when she was born, I was there when she needed her diaper changed, I was there when she took her first steps, I was there when she said her first word(daddy). Now you tell me where was Christopher? Sitting up in Maryland living his life not doing a damn thing about getting a DNA test done. He would send Danielle an email every 2 or 3 months saying he wanted a test done, then disapear for another 2 or 3 months. That is not what I would call someone who deserves to be called a daddy. He still remembers his little sister and misses her dearly. He is still having a hard time understanding that Gabi is in Heaven and still asks me when she is coming home from the doctors. but since you’re both so passionate about the subject, you can do something about it instead of bitching on an internet site. maybe volunteer at a crisis center or take in a foster child.
First of all, I know the definition of “redundant”, I did agree that the types of stories published here fit the very definition. But as was pointed out very eloquently by Wondermom, every victim has their own story and faces their own pain. Referring to that pain as redundant is callous. I stand by that statement.
If people don’t like what they read here, maybe they shouldn’t visit the site. (Sorry Max and Admin- I’m not trying to chase anyone away and decrease viewership, but the very title of the website should indicate its not about rainbows lollipops and smiley faces.)
As for volunteering at a crisis center, I have. I have also volunteered at an animal shelter, donated my time to Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and worked as an Emergency Room nurse. I do not just sit and “bitch on an internet site”, I have helped. I have also been a victim and like to think that sharing ones story of overcoming tragedy is an immense help in dealing with trauma. No matter how similar a story is to the next, they’re nothing alike.
I may not have time to volunteer as much as I would like nowdays, being that I have my own family and my first priority is making sure they’re taken care of, but maybe you could pick up my slack- I guarantee as soon as you take the time to listen, “redundant” will be the last word you think to use- even if the definition fits.

I’d like to comment about Michele’s post: As an adult who lied to about her biological father their whole life? It really is a horrible thing to do to a child. I also endured abuse while in the care of a non biological parent. I often wonder if life would have been different if Mother would have told the truth and not passed me off as someone else’s child. Desperate women do hurt their children by some of their actions.
And to Michael: I’m very sorry for your loss, and am relieved that your little son is healing. But surely you can understand Christopher’s desire for the truth and closure. He deserves that. And also knowing a bit about the legal system, forcing a DNA test is difficult & expensive at best when the other parent is in a different state and moving all around hell & back.
These two need very badly to be terminated. Any “parent” whose idea of behavior correction for a young child is writing “Dumbass” on the kid isn’t worth saving, and it just staggers the imagination that this creature has been given any visitation rights at all given that she basically abetted the murder her other child. He should be wrapped up in a sheet and slowly hammered on with basebeall bats until he looks like hamburger. That would almost be “justice”. God only knows how that poor girl ended up with a severe injury to her genitals before dying, but it doesn’t take a lot of guessing.

TAMPA — Prosecutors have dropped an aggravated manslaughter charge against Danielle McCleary, a 24-year-old mother who told authorities she watched her boyfriend bind, bundle and beat her 2-year-old daughter to death.
They did so to get her to testify in Kenneth G. Lopez’s first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse case.
As part of the deal, McCleary pleaded guilty Tuesday to child neglect, not knowing what sentence a judge will impose after her work with the prosecution is done. The maximum she faces is 15 years in prison. If she does not cooperate, prosecutors can reinstate the manslaughter charge.
McCleary stood before HillsÂborough Circuit Judge Chet A. Tharpe in ripped jeans and a sweat shirt and listened to a prosecutor read what happened to 2-year-old Gabrielle Randel in the early morning hours of March 8, 2009:
Gabrielle was fussy and crying when Lopez allegedly tied her hands behind her back, wrapped her in blankets and sat her down on the ground. He put a karate pad over her, the prosecutor said. And he beat that karate pad until he noticed the girl was silent.
McCleary looked down and cried.
“She failed to intervene on behalf of her child,” prosecutor Michael Sinacore said.
Authorities said the girl suffered blunt trauma to her forehead, multiple marks and bruises to her entire body, a hand mark on her body and serious trauma to her genitalia.
McCleary called 911 after they realized the girl had stopped breathing. When authorities arrived, they found McCleary’s second child, a 3-year-old boy, with the word “dumba–” scribbled on his forehead. A sheriff’s investigator said McCleary admitted to writing it.
She never faced a charge for that.
Her attorney says McCleary has surrendered the rights to her son, who now lives in Texas with his father. She lives with her parents and two younger sisters and is in therapy.
Lopez could get life in prison if convicted.

As far as the DSLs go, even Angie Jo has got to get hers plumped up to match these. IF this is a guy, fellow inmates… shave him, make him grow his hair, get him stylish hat that partially covers his face, dress him in black and he’s your own Angelina. Only younger. And more deserving of punishment (as far as I know she hasn’t beaten anyone to death).
And where is Michele… is skank mom in jail or not? Because whatever else, she needs to be. I do have the feeling she was there for at least part of the beating and that is unforgivable.

Yes shes in jail and I understand tha also at the time I made the comment about him going down there he had just gotten full custody and I couldnt see how he could be anywhere near her after what she did . And she was there the whole time
