TORTURE SLAYING SENTENCE: DEATH FOR LEMARICUS DAVIDSON

The gates of Tennessee’s only death row prison opened wide for Lemaricus Davidson tonight, hours after a Knox County jury sentenced him to die for his role as the ringleader in the January 2007 carjacking, torture and killings of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom.
Davidson arrived at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution’s Unit 2 in Nashville around 6 p.m. local time, said Dorinda Carter, spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Correction. He’ll spend 23 hours per day alone in his cell every day, with just one hour of daylight in a caged yard.
That status won’t change for at least 18 months, Carter said. Depending on his behavior, Davidson could eventually be upgraded to allow occasional phone calls or the chance to apply for inmate jobs such as cleaning, she said.
“Regardless of their status, they don’t ever leave that building,” she said.
The jury of five women and seven men deliberated about four hours before returning its decision this afternoon to a packed courtroom.
“The punishment is death,” the jury foreman said.

The victims’ families gasped at the verdict, but Davidson showed no reaction. Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner admonished those in the courtroom to control any outburst.
“The murder was especially heinous, atrocious and cruel,” the foreman said, reading from the verdict form.
Davidson, 28, most likely will be taken to Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville where death row is housed. Some male inmates, however, are incarcerated at Morgan County Correctional Complex in Wartburg for security reasons. Two inmates with the death penalty are currently housed at that prison.
The jurors this morning heard closing arguments in the penalty phase of this 11-day trial before getting a final round of legal instructions from Baumgartner.
Prosecutor Takisha Fitzgerald told jurors Davidson killed Christian, 21, a University of Tennessee student and her boyfriend Newsom, 23, to save his own neck.
“The only thing Chris had left was the knowledge of who his attacker was,” Fitzgerald said. “(Davidson) took everything else. The only thing (Channon) had left was the knowledge of who her attacker was.”
Defense attorney Doug Trant asked jurors to spare Davidson’s life, noting the abuse he suffered and the foster parents who still love him.
“I’m going to ask you to spare Lemaricus Davidson’s life,” he said. “I’m going to ask you to do it for that little boy who was sexually abused … I’m going to ask you to do it for that little boy who was whipped by extension cords and paperweights.”
The jury, chosen from Knox County at Davidson’s insistence, considered death by lethal injection, life without parole or life, a mandatory 51-year sentence.
Davidson’s brother, Letalvis Cobbins, 26, was convicted in August and is serving life without parole. He is in a protective safety unit away from the general population at a West Tennessee prison after expressing fears for his safety.
Pending trial are suspects George Thomas, 26, who will face a Hamilton County jury Dec. 1, and Vanessa Coleman, 21, whose case is on hold pending a pre-trial appeal.
A fifth suspect, Eric Boyd, 37, remains uncharged in the killings but is serving an 18-year federal prison term for hiding out Davidson after the slayings.
Davidson is the first defendant from Knox County to be sent to death row since 1997. Executions in Tennessee are carried out by lethal injection.
Dennis Suttles, 57, was convicted of first-degree murder for cutting the throat of a woman in a fast-food parking lot in 1996.
Death row currently has 89 inmates, six from Knox County. All but two of the inmates are men.
The female inmates are housed at the Tennessee Prison for Women in Nashville. One of those is Christa Gail Pike, 33, who was sentenced to death in 1996 for the torture-slaying of Colleen Slemmer, then a fellow 19-year-old Job Corps student.
On Thursday, two women who offered Davidson a better life as a teenager asked the jury to spare his life.
Foster mother Flo Rudd and group home mother Alice Rhea told jurors Davidson was worth saving despite the fact that he turned to robbery and, ultimately, murder despite their efforts to rescue him from a troubled upbringing.
“He’s my son,” Rhea said. “I love him. He has such potential. If you put him in a structured environment, he does everything he should. I think he can be an influence to young men for years to come.”
The defense called 11 witnesses on Thursday on Davidson’s behalf in the wake of his convictions.
Jurors on Wednesday deemed him guilty of the top count in 35 of 38 charges, ranging from the murder of both Christian and Newsom to kidnapping to robbery. They also found Davidson guilty of multiple counts of raping Christian.
Davidson’s only reprieve – and it was largely irrelevant because of the murder convictions – came in the rape of Newsom. With no DNA evidence to directly link him to a rape that forensic evidence suggested was committed with an object, jurors opted for convictions of the lesser charge of facilitation of aggravated rape.
He will be sentenced at a later date on those charges.
Davidson chose not to testify in his own behalf either during the trial or sentencing phase.
The victims were white and all four defendants are black, and that raised some racial tension, including a protest in Knoxville.
A lot was made of race on the Internet, but prosecutors and police have said race was not a factor, contending the carjacking that led to their deaths was random.

Lemaricus Davidson needs to Fry, to bad they didn’t give him the Electric chair. For one time the Justice system or should I say Jury, did a fine outstanding job. I Thank You Jurors for a job well done. It is a shame they can’t be tortured like Cris and Channon. Judgement day will come soon for him. As for the rest, let them rot in hell with him. I Can’t wait to see Vanessa’s and Eric Boyd’s trial. Lets see who they blame for there actions.

YESSS! A victory in this case at last. I am so happy for the families of the victims, this gives them a sense of dignity in honor of their loved one. I am just shocked at how he tries to look so decent with his glasses and almost nerdy look. Apparently the jury didn’t fall for it.

I’m so glad that this thug got death! It would only be better if he could meet the same fate as his victims. I don’t understand why Boyde has not been charged with this crime, since it seems that he had a large part in it as well.
It makes me so mad that some people try to turn everything into a race issue. The fact is that these black men killed two white people. How can you argue that? They did it. Color doesn’t matter, what matters is that the two people are dead forever.
I cannot believe that there are people out there with this little regard for human life. So glad that they didn’t get away with this.

Hallelujah! 4 hours of deliberation was way too long in my opinion, but I am glad for the verdict. And the foster mom talking about him being an influence?! Jesus Christ, what is wrong with people? The lawyers for those demons are bottom feeders as far as I’m concerned. How could they even initiate the thought that Channon and Chris put themselves into that situation? May the rest of the assholes get what they deserve as well.
I would like to thank the defense for this death sentance!!! Maybe they should have re-thought the whole blaming the victims route and the jurors would have given him life in prison, although I am glad they didn’t. I think that probably pissed them off as much as it did us!
Exactly….not to mention the fact that it was a Knoxville jury……I mean, c’mon. I’m local, and I don’t know anyone who didn’t hear about this case locally…they basically just wanted to pick a jury that would give a fair trial, not one that hadn’t heard about the case before hand….and the fact that they tried to make it look like they were doing a drug deal and that davidson and christian were lovers and all that other bullshit….I’m sure the jury was sitting there as disgusted at the accusations as the family was and as we were. I understand that the defense attorneys had to do their job to “defend” but to try to pass that story off……please. I’m sure the jury was sitting there thinking “Are you serious?” As far as the drug deal gone bad…..at what point do you go to buy a dime bag and the situation “go bad” enough to where you end up raped, tortured, shot, burned to death, and shoved in a trash can to suffocate. I mean, it’s not like it was a gang war or something, EVEN if that was the case….wouldn’t they just say “you don’t have money to pay? get out and don’t come back!” I mean good grief. No one would believe it was a drug deal gone bad. That’s ridiculous.

That night/weekend in question when Chris & Channon were senselessly murdered, little Lemaricus was in total control over their lives. He wielded all the power, and felt he had the right to play god. He subjected these two kids to horrors & cruelty beyond comprehension, and now? the little insect Lemaricus gets to spends the rest of his pitiful, sad life locked in a cell waiting….waiting…waiting, counting the hours until he is snuffed out & killed like nothing more then some poor animal in a slaughterhouse. I guess Lemaricus is finding out it kind of sucks when others play god with your life.
I just hope they really have a hard time “finding a vein” with this jackass, and he suffers horribly until his last stupid breath.
Well this is good news indeed. This shitbag isn’t going to get another chance to hurt anyone else ever again. I haven’t liked living in the South much, but I guess one good thing about it is there are very few people here who could wind up on the jury of a case like this that would fall for the whole defense routine of “cut his hair, put a tie on him and tell everyone a bullshit sob story of how hard his life was.”
If I could write a letter to the now bookish-looking murdering rapist “Mister” Davidson it would say:
So you got a death sentence. You thought you’d get off easier, you listened to your lawyer’s plans and strategies, you placed your hopes in their hands, you gambled…and you lost.

Every time you lay down in your Death Row cell at night to wait for sleep that doesn’t come, every time you feel the fear of knowing how and when you will die, every time you wish you could take back what you did, every time you want to tell the families of Channon and Christopher how sorry you are, every time you rage against your inevitable fate and beg the forgiveness of a god who isn’t listening to you and doesn’t care about you even if he really *IS* there at all, when your life is reduced to an endless cycle of pain, fear, regret and sadness, you need to remember:

Doof… do you think he will have any regrets? I think he must have no feelings or remorse i.e. I think he’s a sociopath with none of those feelings of compassion and remorse that normal human beings have. How else could he have commited these crimes?
When Channon’s mom is giving her impact statement, he actually looks at her and watches, instead of keeping his eyes down. He looks like he’s listening to the news instead of the mother’s anguish over the life he took.
It is possible he does not regret committing rape and murder, but most of the time people like that still put some value on their own skin. At the very least, he’s going to be afraid as his execution date draws near. He’ll definitely feel a whole brand-new kind of terror when he has to walk into the death chamber and lay down on that gurney, knowing it’s going to be the last time he ever does anything. Maybe he’ll say he’s sorry, maybe he’ll say nothing and maybe he’ll show one last bit of bravado and act like he’s a tough guy that doesn’t give a shit, but it’s a one-in-a-million thing when someone knowingly goes to their death and is truly unafraid. Somehow I don’t think he’s one of those.

TIME TO DIE SHIT HEAD…
There is a lesson to be learned here. One that isn’t approved or advocated by the authorities. You must fight back. Any of us reading this blog could have found ourselves in this exact predicament. Out for a movie then carjacked on a bad side of town. Most would do what these two did and comply. Fully expecting that without resisting that the perps would just take the car, the money, and anything of value and leave us stranded with nothing but unharmed. If we just cooperate and do as told.
Not So! Not So! A fool could say that fighting back would have saved their lives. A wise man knows better; however, the odds of surviving would definitely increase had they fought back and tried to escape but It certainly doesn’t mean the risk decreases and in some cases it might increase the level of violence. It isn’t certain but it’s a much better chance to at least try to put up some fight at some opportune time than just to sit back and hope that these a-holes will let us go at some point. My advice to any victim of a crime is to give up the property and then flee the place. If they give chase or fire then at least you die now instead of later being tortured and abused then dying horribly. Most crooks will panic at the moment you flee and are then faced with a split second choice to make. They can: Follow you, shoot at you, or take the money and run. Most will take the money and run because the hard part is over, they got what they wanted, more work to chase you would be superfluous.
Now I’m no tough guy bodybuilding martial artist. And I surely would be reluctant to challenge a person with a gun pointed at my head. But time after time I read about circumstances that I think could warrant some sort of action on the victim that can at the very least stack the odds more in their favor than just doing nothing. For example if they were surprised while parked by these carjackers and instead of just opening the door and surrendering, the victims gunned the accelerator and possibly run one of these guys over or just peel away with loads of dust in the perps eyes. The perp could shoot at the vehicle which is unlikely because they expect people to just give up or freeze when they see a gun. Or the perp will most likely think to themselves “Hey wait, hey what? What the f? Your supposed to just give up! Wait, no, no there not just leaving! Shit! Should I just shoot? Well there probably on 911 right now! I should just get out of here and try it later on someone that’s a little easier. Screw this! I’m outta here before the cops come or neighbors hear me shooting!”. That I think is what would most likely happen. Now you could have somebody who just doesn’t give a crap and is going to fire anyways. Well in this instance you have moved a little bit further ahead physically and you have some steel, plastic, fabric and glass between a bullet and you. I think many people would prefer to be shot at with those impediments in the line of fire rather than at point blank.
This isn’t a critique of the actions of the victims in this case. It’s a brief analysis and warning to others to fight back. Wouldn’t you rather die fighting than to die at their will? Most probably I would have done the same things these two did if I was in their situation at that time.
Nowadays after being jaded with all these crime blogs and the state of the world I think now I would act differently. And this change in attitude is a matter of months not years.
God I wish peace and heaven for Channon’s and Christopher’s soul. And I wish eternal damnation for Letalvis et al. What a monumentaly sad and depraved case this is! Nobody gained! Everyone lost! Negative sum game. There is a small chance that someone out there that is going to be a victim of a violent crime out there heeds this message and fights back! Remember fleeing or just screaming is fighting back. Anything other than surrender is fighting back. Do something, anything. Don’t just cave in and let these guys have their way. What you said here reminds me of something I saw on TV a long time ago. You remember a man named JJ Bittenbinder? He’s a retired Chicago detective and he used to have a show where he gave advice on how to protect yourself from many different kinds of crime. Unfortunately his website is gone, otherwise I’d link it.
I distinctly remember something he said, “You should ALWAYS resist if someone is trying to take you away from wherever they attack you. Your chance of going home in a body bag goes WAY up if you are taken from the scene of the first crime to what will become a second crime scene. Scream, run, fight, kick, scratch, bite, whatever you have to do to draw attention to yourself and get away.”

i live in knoxville. finally some justice for these families, thanks in no small part to the jury from knox county! i went out to dinner a few nights ago with a friend of mine, her sister and her sisters husband and we saw the newsom’s having dinner in the same restaurant. my friends brother in law told our waiter he wanted to pay for their meal and the waiter said someone had already beat us to it. everyone in the place probably wanted to go to them and say how sorry we were for their loss but at the same time everyone let them eat in peace and gave them some dignity. a very sad situation and i am glad davidson got the death penalty.

I wonder if he was afraid someone would rape and toture him to death? He should be scared for his safety… it sucks the Channon and Christian didn’t have someone to step in and protect them the way this disgusting person did. Oh – that made me want to barf a million times – I listen to the news, read our local paper (the Atl Journal) and I didn’t hear about this case until I tuned into court tv this week. Why was this case so hidden from mainstream america????????

I prefer glasses over contacts, especially when staring at a computer screen for other reasons. They provide a filter, a consistent staring focus, and they help me to appear older in a field where my apparent youth sometimes makes it difficult to get points across to older colleagues associates and subordinates.
Glasses also perform the emphasis constructs that fans and handkerchiefs served only one-hundred years ago. For example, if I want to show that I am extremely interested, tired, or can’t believe my ears, I might remove my glasses and either rub my eyes (less than cartoonishly) or indicate with my glasses. I’ve had two different bosses who removed their glasses to point at imaginary concepts in the air, to give a motive force to their will–like a conductor’s wand. For hundreds of years, glasses have been the instrument of the scholarly and/or the affluent, as only in recent times have glasses become affordable for most.
Take a street thug, put him in some JCrew, give him some thick but proper prescription glasses, and help him limp through a court room with some basic grace, and the defense attorney can try to paint a picture of someone much different from the raping monster he actually is.
Maybe he won’t sneer at a witness, maybe he won’t immediately react to a judgement or piece of evidence (because he has that added barrier), maybe his eyes will reflect a bit of warmth or human charm, or we’ll ignore the coldness and assume that the stare of dis-passion is from eye strain. It’s all theater, and Fred’s comments are dead on.

There are a lot of tiny psychological tricks that a good criminal defense attorney will use. They learn all of ‘em in Scheister College. Everything from the colors and fabrics their client should wear, to how they should or shouldn’t walk and sit. Feet flat on the floor, hands folded in your lap or on the table top. You don’t often see a limpy, thuggish saunter from these turds when they enter the courtroom, especially for a jury trial. Notice his good grooming, aside from that. Piercings would be removed, tattoos would be covered with clothing, hair would be neatly trimmed, there would be no cologne. Could such a well-groomed, intelligent looking gentleman be a MONSTER? Surely not!
BTW, I never thought of McDonalds as torture even though I can’t stand the place. The constipation alone from a McD’s exclusive diet would be unbearable! What a wonderful idea!!!

I am thankful that Channon and Chris’ parents can finally move on from this dog and pony show. It has been a long two years, I am sure. I have watched this case from afar, and I cant imagine Channon or Chris being my brother/sister or son/daughter. The hell these families have gone through for two long years is something which no one-no good person-should ever have to experience.
Nothing will bring back their children, but I do believe some justice was served.
I’m glad to see that these evil people are getting harsh sentences. The court should show to mercy to them just like they showed no mercy to Christian and Channon!

Sure I am anonymous and out of reach, and what I said made their families boil, but hopefully in time the state takes these POS or even better a white supremist group has a little fun with them.
I will agree that the car jacking was not racist, and the rape was more an act of selfish evil, but the torture was racially motivated and only the most double standard scum would dare say other wise.
There was no reason that this crime had to be so brutal except for extreme racial hate.

I agree as well Fred. I’ve personally believed that this crime was 100% racially motivated. I mean what other reason can there be for such extreme cruelty + the fact that incidentally there were *5* blacks involved in this carjacking, kidnapping, rape & murder against 2 white kids who were obviously very clean cut & looked like easy caucasian targets. I still haven’t been able to make sense of why they had to suffer so much before they were eventually killed, but no one is going to convince me that these same sequence of events would of transpired exactly the same had the victims been two black kids minding their own business. Remember racism works both works.

I am a non-custodial parent who sees his child often – despite the fact that I do not like my daughter’s other parent, I can always haul her into court fpr more visitation – these families can not do that with their childrens’ murderers.
Also as the day approaches for the execution of Lamaricus, the families may be saddened again. People will not care about the couple that was killed and be more concerned with the monster behind the mask that we now see in this story rather than see the monster that started this while series started.

The worst part of this crime (well, one of the worst parts) — which wasn’t really dug into during Davidson’s trial — is that Channon had bleach poured into her gaping wounds and down her mouth to get rid of the DNA.. She was still alive when they poured bleach down her throat.
This aspect couldn’t fully come out during Cobbins or Davidson’s trial because it was Vanessa Coleman who stated that in her statements & they were deemed inadmissible.
But the jury in Cobbins & Davidson heard about bleach being found on Channon’s camisole.. and I remember during Cobbins’ trial – they showed a picture of a bleach bottle in the kitchen and asked a detective to identify it.. I always wondered if the jurors realized the significance of the bleach bottle + the bleach found on Channon’s clothing.

If you had watched the trial – you would have known that Davidson had MANY white friends and was raised in two different foster families — both families were caucasian. If you look at things like socio-economic status, urban-vs-rural environments, family structures, and the like, though, I suspect you’d find that the crime rates among poor, young, urban, black men from broken homes are not that different from poor, young, urban men of other races also from broken homes.

While the percentage of crimes committed is greater, nothing in this document supports the 70% claim. IN fact there’s no table in the document “stats-race-criminal-justice-system-07-08-full.pdf” that supports your position. This document does have a lot of racially motivated crimes, but nothing to support your positons in any conceivable way… Perhaps you should learn how to read?

All five of the defendants in this case deserve to endure the same horrors that were inflicted upon Christopher and Channon. Cases like this make me wish that we had “eye for an eye” punishments in our legal system. There is absolutely no valid reason to go on allowing these five individuals to go on living when they have proven how sick, sadistic, and twisted that they can be. At this point they are nothing but a drain and burden to the taxpayers of society. I can not begin to imagine the pain and horror that Christopher and Channon’s family has endured. Words can not begin to express the emotions that I feel when I imagine what Christopher and Channon endured, and the pain that their families have endured. My sincerest condolences go out to their families. RIP Christopher and Channon.
