A gun, a knife, a hammer, and a car...
Anyone over the most basic of IQ's in the United States can easily identify what these things have in common. They're all tools.
A car is a mode of transportation, a hammer can be used to knock things apart or to join them with a fastener, a knife can cut something and a gun is used to kill things.
When the second amendment was penned, we had a lot of things to kill. We had just over a dozen basic species of poisonous snakes(we technically have many more), some of the largest predatory mammals outside of Africa, a hostile native population and a parent nation that was not going to see one of its colonies succeed. Call it paranoia, or ancient history, but the protection of this tool was reasonable for the time, and a seed of liberty when the farm boys became the sharp shooters of WWI and WWII. The Russians were fond of their wolf hunting snipers, we're fond of our deer hunting, coyote shooting variety.

Now flash forward to today, or rather 2004, when our best data comes forward. The United States had between 8 and 10 thousand intentional homicides by firearms. In the same year we had 16,694 drunk driving fatalities. Why are these two numbers related? Both are from the misuse of a tool. A gun is a tool for killing someone, but it's a tool that has very strict proscriptions and prescriptions for when and where it can and should be used. Intentional murder is wrong. Every state in this Union has a ban on intoxicated driving, yet still we lose more people to drunk drivers in cars than murderous maniacs.

We estimate that there are 235,000,000 guns in the United States, most owned by private citizens. We estimate that there are 254.4 million cars. Even in comparison of percentages, we're unable to make up the differences, why?
If we were to compare these on raw percentages, why is car misuse more prevalent than gun misuse?

Why would your solution of banning all guns be reasonable in this case? What statistical support do you have that suddenly banning firearms, somehow repealing the un-repealable 2nd amendment would solve this problem? How does blaming the tool solve this problem? Should we blame cars for their drunk drivers? Should we blame guns for their asshole owners?

Then I have to move on to your other bandwagon crap...
In the height of the English empire, the Brits rules their seas, colonies and possessions with a hubris few could compare to. From the Boer war, to the Boxer Rebellion to the Seapoy's hanging from trees, the British committed war crimes. The war crimes tribunal, the UN, and even the nature of various constitutions, have at their heart an end to warfare of any kind. The goal is to find a way to discuss what is right and wrong and settle our grievances without a gun, but these solutions have failed to give us a world without war.

When the allies defeated Germany, the forced from the Germans and unconditional surrender, that resulted in a restructuring of the basic rule of German territory. When the allies extracted the surrender of Japan, the allies force the Japanese into an unconditional surrender, an interim government and a constitution that forbade wars of aggression.

When the first Iraq war concluded, partially unreasonable demands were made against the nation of Iraq that would have forced Saddam Hussein to either cede power or surrender the military capabilities he required to protect his power base. The United States at that time crafted this house of cards, fully expecting to return to the task. They buried 2.4 billion dollars of equipment in bunkers in the sands of Saudi Arabia, they spent billions if not trillions in the intervening years changing the nature of our military infrastructure. We fought limited engagements against the Iraqi's to enforce the no-fly zone and other aspects of the UN resolutions designed to depose Saddam or to force an eventual conflict, and during that time, most nations party to the UN cheated the accords that ended that conflict and fed Saddam's power base. Had the case for war been made solely on those accords, and not the charges of WMD, the United States could have moved forward with a much more limited operation, but a presidential administration lied to expand that playbook. They lied in a time when we had a valid reason to attack Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, a group of out of work engineers and religious nuts, most of whom were Saudis, were radicalized by an international terrorist organization working out of Afghanistan. They used a lax security model in outlying airports to take connecting flights to long range flights to New York and LAX, in a mostly successful attempt to gain control of tons of aviation fuel and the civilian transports and hostages within, in order to make them flying bombs. After a rapid investigation, we were able to prove the International Terrorists' claims were correct and that these had in fact been attacks by the same terrorists who attacked our embassies in Africa and our warship in Yemen. We repeated our diplomatic calls to extradite these terrorists, but the Taliban refused even to negotiate. We threatened them with retaliation, they refused, we went in half cocked and assisted an internal force in the nation, to depose the Taliban. We did not engage in any form of containment strategy, due in large part to a presidential prejudice against Iraq, and this enemy filtered into Pakistan. That same enemy has returned to Afghanistan where they control as much as 85% of the territory.

There have been war crimes committed by both sides that are inexcusable. The deployment of Snipers, Helicopter Gunships and tanks are not part of this engagement.

The 50 caliber sniper rifle, that is a mainstay of some branches of the United States military is a weapon classified as legal and standard issue. Our soldiers in the field wear their uniforms, including insignia of rank. The use of camoflage and the gillies suits used to conceal snipers are legal. The use of snipers on military targets is not forbidden by military treaty or law, within a war zone. The United Nations recognizes Afghanistan and Iraq as war zones.

If you have a solution that can reasonably settle the grievances of both parties, then please convince both sides of this and move forward. Barring total conversion of the West to Islam, the stated goals of Al Qaeda and the Taliban are not possible. Barring the capture and trial of all parties to the 9/11 terrorist bombings, the United States will not be satisfied. Until both sides have had enough, this engagement can't really end.

Snipers are on order by their supervising officer. To compare our soldiers to Nazis death camp guards is downright offensive. It trivializes the Holocaust and the people who died in them. As for going after Bush for the war, that opens a can of worms.
