UPDATE: It Looks Like Jean Pierre Orlewicz May Get A New Trial
JUDGE GRANTS ORLEWICZ A NEW TRIAL

Three days before Christmas, Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Bruce Morrow delivered the present Jean Pierre Orlewicz has been hoping for since his murder conviction last year.
Morrow on Tuesday issued an opinion granting Orlewicz’s motion for a new trial, saying psychiatric evidence ruled inadmissible by the original trial judge, Annette Berry, should have been allowed and granting the defense’s motion for the new trial.
Orlewicz’s appellate attorney, Elizabeth Jacobs, had argued that keeping such testimony out of the original trial was tantamount to denying Orlewicz proper counsel.
On Tuesday, following a hearing that stretched over several months, Morrow agreed.
“The Sixth Amendment guarantees to every person the right to counsel,” Morrow wrote. “The order issued by the court … denying the testimony of Drs. Billings, Speck and
Shiener, denied defendant Orlewicz of the effective assistance of counsel. This denial deprived defendant Orlewicz of his right for a fair trial.
“Therefore, this Court will grant defendant’s motion for a new trial,” Morrow wrote.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has 21 days to appeal the decision.
“We are baffled by the judge’s decision, and believe that it is based upon a profound misunderstanding of the Sixth Amendment, the rules of evidence, and the rules of criminal procedure,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a statement. “We are confident that the Court of Appeals will reverse the decision in relatively short order.”
Jacobs understands that, pending Worthy’s appeal, any new trial is a long way away. But that didn’t dim the defense’s attitude over Morrow’s opinion.
“We’re very pleased the judge understood and found my client’s rights had been violated,” Jacobs said Tuesday. “I believe the judge came to the correct decision. We believe, given the opportunity to present the case completely, a jury will return a verdict more compatible with the evidence.”
The victim’s parents, Jim and Kim Sorensen of Westland, were disappointed in Morrow’s decision.
“I’m not happy, because he’s wrong,” Jim Sorensen said. “This isn’t any more than I expected he would do. He’s basically allowed the defense to do an end-around around the original trial and present a second defense, and I’m not happy with that. I’m comfortable the appellate court will evaluate everything and reverse Judge Morrow’s decision.
“The thing that’s hard is it means it drags on a little bit more,” Sorensen added. “By no means do I think there will be a second trial.”
Orlewicz was convicted last year of killing and beheading 26-year-old Daniel Sorensen of River Rouge, then dumping and burning his torso in a Northville field and disposing of the head in the Rouge River. Co-defendant Alex Letkemann of Westland pleaded guilty and testified against Orlewicz.
But Berry denied the defense’s motion for psychiatric testimony to be heard, setting up the defense’s new motion.
“We know we’re a long way from going to a new trial,” Jacobs said. “But we’re very pleased with (Morrow’s) decision.”
I have to admit I’m not at all surprised by Judge Morrow’s Decision to grant that little weasel J.P. Orlewicz a new trial. I smelled a rat the day, early on in the hearings, when Morrow closed the hearings to the public. Even Jim Sorenson and his wife were barred from attending the proceeding. A good rule of thumb is, if you have to do something in secret, it’s because you have something to hide. Only God and Judge Morrow knows how he came to this decision, but hopefully the Michigan Court Of Appeals quickly corrects his error.
What a new trial means is that Orlewicz’s lawyers get to come up with a new defense strategy to replace the one that failed so miserably the first time around. I suspect that it will involve a lot of psychobabble about Orlewicz’s state of mind at the time of Dan Sorenson’s murder – that he feared for his life because of Dan’s tough-guy reputation. It most likely won’t get him acquitted, in my opinion, but there’s a chance that it might get him a reduced sentence and that’s not right.
J.P. Orlewicz, with the help of Alexander James Letkemann, stabbed Dan Sorenson and slashed his throat. When he was dead, they cut off his head and burned his hands and face with a blowtorch to make his body harder to identify. Then they dumped Dan’s body in the woods like so much fucking garbage, and threw his head in the river. This is the young man that Judge Morrow thinks was so intimidated by Dan Sorenson that he possibly may have acted in self defense. Does the little bastard sound helpless to you?
Sorry, sorry. It’s just that I’m a little worked up over this one. I watched Mr. and Mrs. Sorenson after JP and Alex were convicted, and even after all that the two defendants had done to their son, these two people were most concerned with what was going to happen to Orlewicz and Letkemann in prison, and how much their parents were suffering. They defined the words ‘grace’ and ‘class’, and I’m feeling really protective of them at the moment.

When someone dies, the scene and evidence are looked at very intensly because the victim is not around to testify….. the state, the procescution must make their case, while in cases like assault the victim must do most ofthe work.

Between the parade of witnesses saying JP DID brag about it, before the murder and afterwards, Alex’s testimony, and the brutal way they disposed of Dan’s body, his story of being a victim defending himself sounds like a fucking fairy tale.

You obviously did not watch Orlewicz’s trial, Justin S.. Where it was proved that Orlewicz PLANNED this murder. His friends testified for the prosecution. His friend Alex Mullins was supposed to help Orlewicz with the murder and they laid out a tarp, so the Dan’s blood didn’t get all over the place.. and they blacked out the windows, so no one could see in.
When Sorenson showed up, he was with his girlfriend who was waiting in the car for him.. so they couldn’t do it that day (or they’d leave a witness).. So they rescheduled, but Mullins was busy the day that Orlewicz picked, so then Orlewicz enlisted Alex Letkemann..
It was all premeditated and planned. If you knew anything about this case or actually watched the trial then you would know that.
Tons of friends of Orlewicz testified that they heard him state that he wanted to kill someone and get away with it.. some testified he specified that he wanted to kill Dan.. They thought he was joking.. They were wrong.
Some of the testimony is still on youtube..Or you can google old newspaper articles which outline what Alex Mullins, Letkemann, Isam “Izzy” Ayyash and Levi Webb testified to.. then you might not be so clueless.
Here is what needs to happen…if the little bastard is mentally ill, then the solution is to take him out to a pasture and put him out of his misery! I might get flamed here but oh well! Ya know, at first I had questions about this one. I understand someone being so afraid that they kill and then doing whatever they can to try not to get caught. So the fact that this kid stabbed and then decapitated/burned the fingerprints off of Sorensen’s body doesn’t, unto itself, convince me of malice. Having personally experienced genuine terror, I know people can react violently; BUT, when we start getting info that he BRAGGED about the murder and that he mocked the victim by playing with his head (WTF?!!) then, he is showing an arrogance–not fear–which convinces me of a genuine intent to attack his victim rather than reacting out of extreme fear.
Having a mental illness is not a ‘get out of jail’ card. Let’s get something straight here Lesa., Dan Sorenson was technically guilty of statutory rape – he was 19 and the girl was 17, and the relationship was consensual – but that doesn’t make him a sex offender. Oh, and by the way, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for JP’s new trial to happen – chances are this last ruling will be overturned by the State Court of Appeals. The Judge in the first trial had good reason to disallow the testimony of those two quack psychologists hired by the defense. Defense experts – and especially these guys for some reason – are notorious for taking money to give whatever opinion you need to help your defense strategy.
It took me a moment to understand what you meant in your second paragraph. “Took care of” and “Punked out” caught me.
“Took care of” obviously means to kill in cold blood. I’m sure that’s admirable to the gutter few, but I doubt many of those few will be on any possible future jury for JP.

I disagree with the opinion that he should be raped in prison. I do not condone prison rape, but I do support this site and do support Orlewicz being sentenced to a much harsher penalty. He is an unrepentant murderer, and we cannot allow someone like that to continue in society.

I do hope he’s miserable in there though.. and I do believe in the DP and believe that Orlewicz should be looking at the needle, but since Michigan doesn’t have the DP and Orlewicz was 17 @ the time of the crime… Life in prison without parole is the only suitable punishment for him.
I hope that Orlewicz does NOT get a new trial – it makes me sick to think of Dan’s poor parents having to go through this again.. If you watched interviews w/them – you’d know what a lovely couple they are and it is heartbreaking to know they might have to re-live all of this.

There probably won’t be a retrial. The prosecution has appealed to Michigan Supreme Court, and they are expected to re-affirm the original conviction. Judge Morrow showed a obvious bias towards Orlewicz’s side during the Appellate Court hearings, but I thing the three judge panel on the Supreme Court will see things differently.
But even on the off chance there is a retrial, as you say there is plenty of evidence to convict him once again. If they try to confuse the jury with a bunch of psychiatric “I was afraid of Dan” bullshit, they still have to get past Alex’s testimony and the words of JP himself before he was arrested. Yeah, good luck with that.
I live in Michigan. Let me tell you something. The judicial system in Michigan is pathetic at best. Maybe someday when we get all these liberal nutless so called leaders out of office, and get some hard core conservative leadership we can get the death penalty reinstated in this damn state, and people like this can get whats coming to them.
