This is 29-year-old Walter Z. Speller III.
There’s something to be said for the natural human inclination to find patterns in everything.
The urgency in the human mind to recognize situations or items, to classify and sort those things and to create some kind of identifiable and predictable pattern – well that’s a drive among many higher thinkers.
Recognizing patterns in human behavior is a large part of law enforcement. By keeping records of misbehavior, we can extrapolate likely future scenarios based on previous behaviors.
Here’s an easy example of the ability to extrapolate future behavior possibilities:
If you put Walter Z. Speller III out in the wild, if you put Walter Speller where he can get his hands on a baby or small child – if you give him a chance – he will seriously fuck that child up.
We can make this prediction and back it with a high degree of probability based on a number of factors. Those factors include three children, two of which are his own flesh-and-blood and all of which have suffered severe brain damage combined with some degree of paralysis.
In December of 2002, Walter Speller was with his 14-month-old son, Isaiah Jones. Nobody but Mr. Speller knows what happened, but somehow Isaiah Jones ended up in the hospital, in intensive care.

Walter Speller was found guilty.
Some of the offered explanations were good – after all the baby could have been given injuries severe enough to put him in a wheelchair for life after he’d been nudged awake after a nap. Or the injuries could have been inflicted from the shaking Isaiah might have suffered as, Walter explained, he had been carried up the street to find a ride to the hospital.
Walter Z. Speller III was sentenced to two years in prison.
Once his time was served, Walter Speller got out and found himself a new baby’s momma.
This baby’s momma brought a girl child into the relationship. Her name is Laniah. Walter, having nothing better to do with his time, started to torture Laniah.
Walter Speller would regularly force the girl to stand in front of him while he held her face in the vise of his hands. As a special treat, Speller would keep his nails long so they dug into the tender skin under Laniah’s ears and around her neck. Walter would slap her face. When the girl fell, Speller would force Laniah to get up.
One time, Speller dragged the child into the bathroom. According to his baby’s momma:
I heard him telling her not to move and to stop screaming because she was crying. Then I heard him telling her to lay down, and he turned the water on her.
Another time, Speller beat Laniah with a belt. He forced the girl to strip and lie on her stomach on a bed, and he thrashed her. When her back was covered with welts and cuts, he turned the girl over and whipped her front with the belt, too.
The abuse continued, getting especially rough after his boy, Ohene Speller arrived.
When the boy was 8 months old, in the month of July, 2008, Walter Speller bit Ohene’s face so hard that Walter’s teeth left indentations. As a result of the bite, the boy’s face turned black and blue. Concerned that his boy’s sudden change of appearance might result in someone possibly calling the cops or child protective services, Walter brought the crying boy to his baby’s momma and told her to put cocoa butter on the wound.
Why did Walter feel the need to bite his son? Well, he explained to his baby’s momma that he did it because he could – which is as good as reason as any, really.
A few days later Ohene Speller got a little sick. The 8-month-old started vomiting and didn’t want to eat his baby cereal. Naturally, Walter Speller took the spoon from his baby’s momma and shoved it into his boy’s mouth. And, just as naturally, that made Ohene cry all the harder.
According to Walter’s baby’s momma:
Walter got upset because he said he was acting like a little girl, acting like a bitch.
And if there’s one thing that 8-month-olds should be concerned with, it’s acting like a bitch.
Walter’s baby’s momma watched as Speller grabbed Ohene by the arm, yanked him out of his car seat, and smacked the baby on the back of the head. That done, Speller threw the baby down on the bed. When Ohene continued to cry, Walter Speller picked the child up again and hit Ohene twice more on the head.
That stopped the baby’s cries, probably because that was the point where the baby started throwing up, turned red and went rigid as it desperately tried to breathe.
According to Walter’s baby’s momma:
He was just, like, lifeless in my arms.
Walter’s baby’s momma told Speller that they needed to go to the hospital, but for some reason he didn’t want to go. According to testimony:
He wanted to know what I was going to tell the doctors about the bite mark he had on his face.
In order to get Walter to take them to the hospital, Walter’s baby’s momma promised Walter Speller she would tell doctors that Laniah accidentally bit Ohene. Satisfied that none of the abuse would come back on him, Speller drove them to the hospital, dropping the pair at the front door of the hospital rather than the emergency department. That done, Walter drove off, with Laniah still in the car, while Campblin tried to find help for her son.
That was the 17th of July in 2008 when doctors treated Ohene for seizures and bleeding in his brain. On the 18th, when Laniah came to visit her brother, hospital staff noticed the bruises covering her body and began to treat her, too.
Photos submitted as evidence at Walter Speller’s trial show bruises and welts covering Laniah’s body. One picture shows a mark in the shape of a belt buckle branded into Laniah’s skin. A forensic pediatrician skilled in assessing cases of child abuse testified that the girl had been repeatedly and severely beaten. No part of the child’s body remained unbruised and Laniah suffered brain damage as a result.
On the 16th of September, 2009, Walter Speller pled guilty to two counts of aggravated malicious wounding.
Speller faces sentencing on those charges in February.
According to the judge, Walter Speller faces a maximum of 21 years under the terms of his plea agreement.
According to authorities, Ohene, now 2, cannot walk or talk. The girl is now 6 and has severe learning disabilities. Both children are in foster care.

As a mother who is thankfull my child is sound in body and mind, how dare this man deliberatley screw up his children who otherwise were born healthy. And how on earth do mothers constantly ignore thier children be beaten and tortured and do nothing about it until it is too late? I divorced my child’s father because he was abusive to me and woud kill any man before he laid a finger on my son.
And some people think monsters like this can be rehabilitated. 21 years is not enough. He basically killed two children. I think he should be lit on fire and left to burn to death.

I tend to find myself more disgusted with the mothers in these cases than the abusers themselves. I am sure that the poor little ones in this story were crying for their mothers, only to be…ignored? If someone raised their hand to my child, I would protect him with my life, and there would NOT be a second swing. The least they could have done was call the cops and have the guy hauled away! It is sickening. Every time I see a case like this, I think about a friend of mine who wants nothing more than to be pregnant, but has not been successful, and has been trying for years. Why are these pieces of shit blessed with the miracle of having a child, and so many good, solid, hard-working, loving people are unable to conceive? It frustrates me to no end, and I know that there would have been many, many women who would tickled pink to be able to take these kids home to a loving environment, but sadly these morons think they should keep their children for themselves to use as punching bags and possibly a welfare check. Please, for the love of God, make these heartless monsters give up their rights if they are not willing to love, feed, clothe, house, and protect their kids the way normal, decent people do. The amount of child killers/abusers that I have read about on this site has made me feel so…well…outraged, saddened, vengeful, disgusted, hateful, nauseated, and frankly a little fearful for my son, and paranoid of others hurting him. Are those marks under his eyes teardrop tattoos? I can’t tell from the picture, but it sure as hell looks like it. Teardrop tattoos represent people that have been murdered don’t they, or am I mistaken? If that’s the case, those and the cross on the forehead should have been a dead give away for these women! Did he get the teardrops to represent what he did to his kids, or did he fuck three additional people up that we haven’t read about yet? Blah blah blah, here I go again.
I’ve heard three distinct meanings behind tear drop tattoos.
1. They represent each person you’ve killed or personally help kill
2. They represent each gang member in your gang who has died while you were in prison and unable to help them.
3. It represents a rank in a gang. One tear is Sergeant, two from one eye is Captain, and a third tear on the other eye represents some rank of distinction. Since some gangs required murder for advancement, 1 and 2 may be a composite.
Some people may just attempt to emulate the significance of 1, in order to find a safer stay in prison and artificially gain significance and credit.

Facial tattoos are a dead giveaway anyway. I mean, what kind of douche bag gets their face tattooed? Mike Tyson? That idiot girl with the stars? The Enigma? Mmmm… good company.
Yeah, I know many bald heavily tattooed guys who are good men, and exceptional fathers. But the facial tattoos just say “I really don’t give a fuck about anything or anyone”. Especially the tear drops.
I know many people with full sleeve tattoos, random scattered tattoos all over their bodies, all sorts of strangeness… I know a guy with a tattoo of Rocky Dennis on his arm and it’s amazing! There’s also a chick with “Speak Friend and Enter” tattooed in an arch over her buttcrack. In Tolkien Elvish. It glows in the dark. I do not judge these people. Well, ‘cept for the buttcrack one. I judge that hysterically funny!
None of these people have facial tattoos because they’re not douche bags. There’s going to be a very strange-looking generation of old wrinkled folk with stretched ear lobes and tattoos and all sorts of stuff. Grandma might look more hardcore than dad. I can’t wait. :)

I know a few guys that have facial tattoos and a few girls as well. They arent perfect, but definetly arent terrible people. Maybe it is the generation. Two of the people give me the feeling that they got the face tattoos because they wanted to hide behind them. Both had terrible childhoods. The girls mainly have it as an accessory, nothing majorly noticable. Alot of people just want to stand out, and instead of finding a posetive way of doing so they do it by inking their face. It is dumb if you ask me, I have 3 tattoos, and most people have no idea I have them. They can be easily shown or hidden depending on the venue!

In my personal experience, anyone I ever met or read about with a facial tattoo as a fashion statement or expression of individualism, especially someone who wants to be treated with any seriousness in any aspect of their life, is a douche bag. I expect Kanye West to get one any day, for instance.

I have no problems with tattoos in general. I have one myself, and probably will get another. (BTW, the “speak friend and enter” is hilarious!!!) The tear drop tattoos are meant to send off a certain message, and it tends to be a clearly negative one. I feel the need to avoid people who are advertising this negativity, and I would think anyone with children, or wanting children, as well as a healthy relationship would do the same. Instead, these mothers thought he would be good father material. Could there be a bigger signal than the definitions of what that tattoo represents listed above? Sheesh!
I don’t have any tattoos, in large part because I’ve met an older veteran who had “Bad Ass” tattooed to his forehead, only a decade before ending up a Baptist pastor. The faded blue mixed with the wrinkles of nearly 80 years on this planet distorted the words significantly, but somehow the lightning bolt clarity of the two S’s made it all too clear.
If I manage to live long enough, and ever end up in a retirement community or God forbid a home, I’ll be the one cackling in the corner whenever anyone with a badly faded and distorted tattoo of a butterfly enters.

I’m only commenting because I believe tattoos are a personal choice, I have over 9, everyone of them means something or resembles something that has happened in my life (ie:plane crash, karma, loved ones). Do I believe they have become the ‘new in thing’ for sure…and most young ones will regret it later in life, me, I won’t I knew when I started that they were here for life…some people forget that…IMO

We need to add a new type of death penalty. Near instantaneous incineration in a blast furnace. There’d be no “pain,” the translation to near plasma would be almost instant, and the build up would insure that those who admonished their victims, not to cry like little bitches, that there are things that even strong men need to be humble around.
While I’d like them to experience pain, the blast furnance sounds good – maybe we could recover the heat as to generate electricity – these bastards need to make some contribution to society.
There’s actually a blast furnace where I live, (worked near/in it )for 14 years….it takes days to cool down for maintence workers are allowed in after 4-5 days 5-10 min in, then 30-45 out..Work boots would melt, the heat gear we wore made it above the normal temp to be in there….which makes me LOVE the idea of the blastfurnace :)

Every time I read about turds with legs like Speller I am thankful for my folks and wish with all my heart they were still around so I could thank them. What a blessing it was, and I didn’t even know it at the time, going through my childhood and doing kid things in complete oblivion that shit like this could even happen. I want to ask God why I was sitting here in my nice comfortable house, with my wife and my big screen HDTV and my computer, instead on in the next room when this asshole began his reign of terror against this family. This website, from what I have read in the past, has put some pressure on judges, has upset the family members of many POS. This website is a reminder that there are people out there who are not going to let things that don’t directly involve them slide – that there is someone in CT (me) that feels that a drunk driver in MI, NY, etc…. will be voting not only for hell for the POS, but also voting for politicians that will make any such POS’s remaning days on Earth hell as well.

To help a kid, an animal, an old person. Tormenting helplessness is just about the worst thing anyone can do. And if it’s animals I rescue then (in heaven) I get to hang out with them between times. No, they don’t. My prison-guard cousin said so, and he worked at all the federal places in California. He also said, once a baby beater is targeted, the other inmates ALWAYS get to him. Sometimes it takes a while, but it happens. They do not give up. Sometimes even when a guy has been separated they get to him.
The lawyers and lawmakers who made the laws where crimes like this and even murdering someone get less than life in prison, or better yet, the death penalty, belong /hopefully are in Hell. I also agree with other placing blame on the mothers. These children were let down by so many people. I dont get why for days we have to watch so much debate on health care, smoking commercial, and other crap when we could be making chilld abuse our major cause. Is it so sad that people dont want to hear about it? Or do people care more about themselves and their own problems to care about kids they dont know? More has to be done, I say let all the pot heads out of jail and fill their spots with child abusers. There has to be some solutions, just not the kind that win elections!

My fiance and I have friends who have facial scarification and/or tattoos and one who has implants on his forehead that he attaches horns to them. They love children and some have their own kids. Yes, it is fuckers like this who give the rest of you a bad name. But there are those of us who understand the difference between a prison tattoo and a piece of body art. The only reason I don’t have a tattoo is that I have yet to see a symbol or image I want on my body forever. I promised myself that if my band ever went anywhere outside of our local scene, I’d get the band logo tattooed on me somewhere. :)
I think I’ve just had really bad experiences with people with facial tattoos. Of course I live in So. Cal, and you can cut the poser pretentiousness here with a knife. Seems the poserhood increases according to the number of facial tattoos/piercings people have, especially in the local music scene which is where I do most of my socializing.
The guy with the Rocky Dennis tattoo is a fantastic father. He has a gorgeous collection of vintage horror film portraits on his back. My bass player has a couple of facial piercings and lots of body art, and one of my good friends owns a tattoo and piercing parlor so I’m really not as prejudice as I sound. He refuses to do hate tattoos but will pierce anything.
The majority of facial tattoos I see are gang brands, Aryan Nation symbols, swastikas and teardrops. In my experience, these are never good people even if they have their moments of gentleness.
I agree with you 100% that tattoos do not signify that you are a bad person or could not care for children. They are a form of expression and are often artistic in nature. Many people get tattoos in honor of their children or someone else important in their lives. I am planning on hooking my son up to a cardiac monitor at work and get his heart rhythm as a wrap tattoo with his name, but I would certainly never abuse him or mistreat him. He is the LAST person on this planet that I would consider harming. On the other hand, I would also never get a tattoo of hate or negativity for all the world to see that will be clearly visible to everyone for the rest of my life. What good can come from a tattoo that screams “murderer” or “gang member”?
