EX-FIRE OFFICIAL CONVICTED OF FELONY ANIMAL CRUELTY IN BRUTAL ATTACK ON NEIGHBOR’S DOG

Glynn Johnson, a retired Los Angeles County assistant fire chief has been convicted on animal cruelty for beating his neighbor’s 6 month old puppy so severely it had to be euthanized.
The 55-year old former Assistant L.A. County Fire Chief was found guilty Tuesday of felony animal cruelty and a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a deadly weapon in the beating death of Karley, a six-month-old female shepherd mix owned by his neighbors, Jeff and Shelley Toole.
Johnson will be sentenced on March 8th.
He faces up to four years in prison.
The case has drawn wide attention, especially from animal-rights groups.
For weeks leading up to Johnson’s arrest, protesters rallied in front of the district attorney’s office asking that the fire chief be prosecuted.
The Tooles say they are relieved by the verdict and feel justice has finally been done. They are hopeful Johnson will get the maximum sentence allowed.
“It’s very emotional. We knew all along he was guilty, but you have to convince 12 jurors of that and … they were right and justified to come to that verdict,” said Shelly Toole.
“We’re just very happy that this stage is done,” added her husband, Jeff Toole.
“We knew all along what Glynn was guilty of. It won’t bring Karley back, but justice will be served, and our family can move forward,” he told KTLA.
Jurors deliberated for just under three hours over two days before reaching their verdict.
Prosecutors say Johnson willfully and intentionally beat the dog in an unprovoked, violent outburst that was as much directed at the puppy as it was her owners. They claimed the dog’s death was the culmination of a long-standing feud between neighbors.
Karley’s injuries, which included multiple skull fractures, a broken jaw and smashed teeth, were so extensive that a veterinarian recommended putting her down, which the Tooles agreed to do.
Johnson’s defense attorneys, however, painted a very different picture. They emphasized Johnson’s 30 years in public safety as a firefighter, during which time he saved countless dogs, cats and horses. They say the retired fire chief is an upstanding citizen who was subjected to a family that let animals run wild and allowed a son to rev his loud motorcycle in the common driveway that Johnson shares with the Tooles.
During his opening statements Jan. 19, Deputy District Attorney Will Robinson said Glynn Johnson put dog feces in his neighbors’ mailbox with a letter warning them to keep their dogs off his property.
The Tooles are the “neighbors from hell” who routinely take in stray animals and then don’t take care of them, giving them the run of the community, defense attorneys argued. And the Tooles tried to domesticate a stray named Karley, unsuccessfully, the defense added.
Defense attorney John Sweeney said this was clearly a case of self-defense against a vicious animal that nearly severed Johnson’s thumb during an attack. He said Johnson only beat the dog with his fist and with a large rock because he feared for his life.
And Sweeney said all the neighbors who saw the beating simply did not witness the dog’s attack on Johnson first — biting his legs, arms and hands and then locking its jaws on his thumb, eventually leaving it dangling by only a thread of skin.
KTLA reporter Chris Wolfe has seen pictures of the stitched thumb and it appears that only the very tip of the finger was sliced, and successfully “reattached.”
On Thursday, Johnson testified he took the dog from his neighbor, Travis Staggs, to save the man from having to walk around to the Tooles’ residence in the 1700 block of Armintrout Drive.
Johnson said he was walking Karley by the collar when she suddenly stiffened, whipped around and bit him on the wrist, forcing him to the ground.
“I was in a combat situation with this dog,” Johnson said. “I was doing everything I could to kind of hold the animal at bay so it wouldn’t get close to my eyes and face.”
Neighbor Travis Staggs took the stand as the first witness for the prosecution.
Staggs said that on November 3, 2008, Karley wandered into his driveway.
He testified he had the dog by the collar and was walking her back home when Johnson came over from his yard and offered to save Staggs a trip and walk the dog home himself.
Staggs said he had concerns, but gave Johnson the “benefit of the doubt” and handed over Karley. The fire chief would simply take Karley across his front yard and over to the Toole’s house on the other side of his property.
Staggs said once Johnson had Karley by the collar, he only took his eyes off the chief for a split second. He watched Johnson walk the dog a few yards and then erupt in violence, punching her 10 to 15 times in the head with his fist. Then Johnson used a large rock to bash Karley’s head another 10 to 15 times. Staggs says he even saw Johnson trying to pry open her jaws with his bare hands.
Staggs says he kept shouting for the fire chief to stop, even pulling at his shoulders at one point.
But Staggs says Johnson just pushed him away without ever looking at him.
After a day of early testimony, KTLA talked with Jeff Toole’s brother Larry outside.
Larry Toole fought back tears as he explained how Johnson’s actions have changed his brother’s family forever. Larry Toole said Johnson murdered a member of the family, and that he hopes Johnson “rots in hell.”
Toole has said Johnson was antagonistic from the time his family moved next door.
So justice is served for Karley, the poor mutt whose only crime appears to be that Glynn Johnson had a grudge against her owners. We’ve had a couple of anonymous posters leave comments under the original Glynn Johnson story stating that he was a nasty individual – not the selfless public servant originally portrayed in the media.
While I could neither confirm nor deny these accusations, I did find many, many others on other websites which contained similar information. Granted, a man in a position of authority like Glynn Johnson is going to make some enemies, but this “other” Glynn certainly fits in better with his eventual attack on Karley the dog.
Add this to some of the testimony from his trial and you end up with the portrait of a very confrontational, angry, vindictive son of a bitch:
The D.A. questioned Johnson about his violent past, bringing up an incident which is documented in police reports where Glynn attacked his 14 year old daughter Amber in their backyard after an argument. Johnson pushed his daughter to the ground, hitting her with the buckle end of his belt several times. He then dragged his daughter back into the house where he proceeded to beat her again, shouting “I wish you were dead.”
It’s just a shame that a six month old puppy had to sacrifice her life to expose Glynn Johnson as a fraud. In a way, Karley is a hero for taken the hit for the human that surely would have suffered the same fate if Glynn Johnson hadn’t lost it that terrible afternoon in November of 2003.
Note: The second picture is a photo of Karley’s face after Glynn Johnson got through with her. This is the tamest of the ones I had available, and I even debated posting this one. The damage to the dog’s right eye (our left) is especially disturbing. In spite of how graphic the picture was, I felt it was necessary for people to see just how badly Glynn Johnson beat this poor, defenseless animal.
There was also a post made recently that blamed the dog for Johnson’s heinous act, claiming the dog was an 8 months old, not 6, German Sheppard who attacked the retired chief – causing him to defend himself. As you can see from the full body picture of Karley, she was actually a mutt, she was six months old, and according to witnesses, Glynn Johnson attacked the dog without any provocation, and continued to beat the dog even after a neighbor tried to stop him. I’m very glad to be able to put that poster’s lies and half-truths to rest, once and for all.

Hmm…don’t know why I didn’t comment on the first post about this guy. After reading all that was said, I’m inclined to think he really did just kill this dog out of pure meanness but I can’t completely dismiss the possibility that she could have bitten him first.
What I really want to stress here is this:
This case is a stellar example of why is it absolutely critical that the owner of any pet should make sure said pet is *NEVER EVER* allowed to roam free off of their property. Here in SC, all someone has to do is say that an animal they do not own and did not allow on their property was in any way a threat to their own animal, child, guest or self and they have a legal right to kill it. They won’t be charged with a crime and the owner of that animal will not be able to seek any damages whatsoever, they in fact can be held responsible for any injury or loss resulting from their pet’s actions while running loose and can also face fines or other penalties whether the animal was purposely let loose or not. Obviously, if someone were to kill an animal which was on its’ owner’s property or any other place not belonging to the person who killed it, that would be another story entirely.
I’m not saying the Toole family was at fault for what happened to their dog, but Glynn Johnson would have had no chance of getting away with killing her if she had been confined to their yard or house.
I agree with you. Usually when people make threats toward others regarding animals, those warnings should be taken very seriously. So many people are out there just looking for a reason to do things like this. I know people who have had their animals shot, for no reason other than the animals were sniffing around on a neighbor’s property. It is sick, but it is a reality. If you take the responsibility of being a pet owner, you have to protect them by keeping them “on a leash” so to speak. I also agree that the family is not at fault for this bastard’s actions, but by keeping her away from him, he would not have had the pleasure of finding a reason to beat this poor animal.
I really think most of the reason why Johnson was convicted for this was because of the brutal overkill and his position of trust that comes with a career in public service. It’s bad enough for anyone to beat and kill a dog the way he did, but for someone who has the lives of others in his hands on a regular basis it is much worse by many orders of magnitude. His claim that the dog attacked him first would have been much more believable if he’d struck her once or twice instead of a couple dozen times. It’s no different than when someone does harm to another person who is a threat. If you use force to try and stop them but you continue the attack after they retreat, you go from justified self-defense to a criminal act.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve talked to people who were devastated by their pet’s death due to accidents or cruelty but they let it slip that it actually came about because of their own carelessness.
As ugly as it sounds, that’s exactly what happened here.
I have to respectfully disagree with you dooflotchie. While you make a very good point in general, it doesn’t apply to Glynn Johnson’s case, and I’ll tell you why.
Johnson lied about Karley attacking him. There wasn’t nearly enough time for the dog to bite him on the wrist, force him to the ground, and have him get up again before Travis Scaggs turned around again and saw Johnson beating the shit out of the dog. Scaggs testifies it was a split second from the time he handed control of Karley over to Glynn Johnson and he turned to see him beating the puppy.
No, this was a planned, unprovoked attack by a guy with an ax to grind with Karly’s owners.He couldn’t scare then so he took it out on a 6 month old puppy.
Still, though, dooflotchie makes a good point “in general.” My feeling about my cats is that they’re my kids and I protect them as I would kids. I don’t let them roam. I’ve screened their sitters carefully (yes we hire a catsitter when we go out of town). The world is full of bastards. There are those who overreact, and maltreat an animal because of some slight or perceived injury, and there are those like this prick who, as Max, says had an issue to begin with and took it out on the dog. Why take a chance is my motto. But by saying this I certainly don’t fault the puppy’s owners. The owner innocently turned his back for one second. If only we lived in a world where most people were halfway decent, that would be okay.

Oh, I believe you’re right about that. I did say I thought the dog didn’t really bite him first in my OP. The part about not dismissing that possibility should have been worded differently, I guess.
At my job I’m interacting with dozens of dogs every single day and I’ve seen how they sometimes bite without giving a clear signal that they’re getting ready to. Even when they do give a warning, it’s easy to miss it if you’re not paying close enough attention to their body language. The other neighbor that witnessed this horror could have only taken his eyes off the dog for a second, but that’s still enough time for a bite to go unnoticed.

I do not know the whole story of the feud but I know Shepherds and have had them all my life, a puppy of that age is just a big goof with a lot of love to pass around. He grabbed this dog by the collar and I am assuming that it was not in a gentle manner (since he already hates the people)…she is a PUPPY and she may have bit him. SO WHAT?!?! She’s 6 mo. old and he’s a big guy! A 12 lb. rock??? Seriously???!?!!? If he had her by the back of the collar, she couldn’t have bitten him anyway. I am guessing it was a firm grip and he had her collar pulled upward, likely choking her a bit. It’s what a person who is pissed off would do. She probably bite him when he started attacking her too. I bet he provoked her by bashing her head in. God I want to hurt him. I have 3 dogs, 3 cats, and a rabbit. If someone touched them, I would be the one going to jail for murdering or beating someone close to death.
Being a firefighter and saving animals, there is no way in all those years he never encountered a dog or cat that was scared as shit and that probably tried to bite him while getting it out. I wish he tried to save me from a fire. I would knock his ass out and leave him in there to burn a slow and painful death. What a pussy! I understand the need for the photo and do not object to it based on those principles. I had to back away from the article for a day or so. Great job as usual, Max. I read the original story. I see he didn’t confine his brutality to animals, not that that’s ‘better’ or anything. It’s public servants like this who give all the good ones a bad name. Special place in Hell for him, alongside all of the other posers who have soiled the reputations of heroes this way. Bad cops, firefighters, EMT’s, etc. deserve extra penance!
My kids adopted a stray pit bull and I now have to get rid of it as my rental contract says no pets allowed. The dog is a big baby that’s house trained and doesn’t bark or bite. I’m terrified that someone will take it and try to make it into a fighting dog (it already has a large scar on its face from a dog fight) or worse yet, that some freak like Johnson will pick it up and kill it for kicks. So this story made me about ten times more anxious today.
Why would it shock anyone to find out he beats his kids? Bastards like this pick on everyone smaller than them. The whole situation cries out for some big ass dude to whip the shit out of him. But I’ve noticed that bullies never pick on anyone bigger than themselves. They prefer to beat on defenseless children and animals, with a few wife beatings thrown into the mix.
Try pit bull rescue groups, they would love a dog like yours he has a great history with you and your kids and would be able to placed pretty easily. :)

I hear you when you say this dog is a well-behaved teddy bear. I’ve met many, many pit bulls at my job and have fallen in love with the breed as a result. I’m in the same boat as you, I live in a place that doesn’t allow them (but they do allow other breeds!) and I’ve missed out on more than one opportunity to save a pittie. It. REALLY. Sucks.
If you decide to rehome this dog yourself you’ll have to be very, very careful. Some things that will help:
Get him/her neutered or spayed if you haven’t done that already. Dogfighters aren’t interested in a dog they can’t breed. Microchip him and don’t tell the person you choose to adopt him. The chip will get him back to you if he winds up in a shelter later on. Insist on a home visit and vet references. Shady characters with bad intentions aren’t going to want you to see where they are taking the dog.

Well the witnesses all say he tried to break the dog’s jaw by opening his mouth wider than it’s supposed to open. Thank you for the update on this! I remember reading about this horrible act of cruelty a while back, and being so enraged. Its good to know this POS was finally found guilty. This monster should be ASHAMED & socially ostracized for his actions. There really is no excuse for beating a 6 month old dog to death – NONE.

I know everthing about this case. I live down the street from where this took place. I know him and I know them. It was just a way for Mr. Toole to finlly get him back. Why was his dogs and cats just running around all the time. Just waitting for something to happen. I know more then anyone! I was there after it happen. I seen how that dog use to act, it wasn’t trained at all. They found that dog and I think it had some problems be they got it. I know Mr. Toole and Mr. Johnson.

Sure the Tooles were lousy pet owners, but there are laws to deal with that. But you’ve got things all backwards – this was all about Johnson getting back at the Tooles for not controlling their dog. There was lots of testimony about his resentment of the Tooles at Johnson’s trial. One thing it was NOT about was race, at least not until you brought it up. If you want to debate whether or not Glynn Johnson is guilty, feel free to argue your point till you turn blue in the face, but don’t cheapen your argument by using racism as a excuse.

I’m not going to give out too many details about where I work, but I’ll tell you I am around dogs of all breeds all day, every day. I’ve been at this job for more than 5 years and not once has a dog ever successfully bitten me although many have tried. I’ve learned to read their body language very well. I know their behaviors very well also.
It’s really very, very rare for a dog to just suddenly go from friendly to crazy and start viciously attacking people one day out of the blue. Most of the time when that super-rare dog comes along that DOES do that, it’s almost always because of a severe physical illness or injury or another extremely traumatic event.
Now I’m not saying vicious and dangerous dogs are rare. They’re not. BUT…when a dog becomes mean and a threat to people there are signs that is going to happen and lots of times people miss those signs until it’s too late and something tragic happens. If the dog involved in this case really had been turning into a bad dog there would have been others around the neighborhood who would have told stories of things like her chasing kids or other dogs. Aggressive behavior like growling or snapping at people. Starting fights with other dogs. Threatening passers-by like mail carriers and garbage collectors.
There weren’t any people coming forward and saying anything like that about this dog, though, so I don’t believe she attacked Mr. Johnson like he says she did. The eyewitness account of the other man who saw this happen has the ring of truth to it, at least to me anyway. My own experience with dogs over the years has borne that out as well.
I don’t think Glynn Johnson is a cruel, lying dog killer because he is black. I think he’s a cruel, lying dog killer because his story doesn’t even come close to adding up and there you have it.
Why do you keep bringing that up Vin? It was proven in a court of law that Karley the dog did not attack Glynn Johnson first, and that Glynn beat the dog to death without any provocation. That’s what he was convicted of FELONY animal cruelty, and why he’s going to serve real prison time.
