How Close To A Clockwork Orange Will We Come?
It’s a stinking world because there’s no law and order anymore! It’s a stinking world because it lets the young get on to the old, like you done. Oh, it’s no world for an old man any longer. What sort of a world is it at all? Men on the moon, and men spinning around the earth, and there’s not no attention paid to earthly law and order no more.
For anyone who has either seen the movie or read the 1962 novel by Anthony Burgess, A Clockwork Orange is an experience not soon forgotten.
Alex, our humble friend and narrator, would be comfortable with the situation in the UK today. I submit exhibit A into evidence.
Two teenage boys break into the beer cellar of a restaurant in the UK. The owner, Sal Miah, who has run the restaurant for 14 years, catches them in the act. They run, he chases them, grabs them and brings them back to the restaurant to wait for the cops that he had his staff call for.
While they’re all waiting for the cops to show up to make everything better, the teenagers’ friends are howling for their cohorts to be released. The gang outside starts to kick in the door to the restaurant, so Mr. Miah locked the door to the restaurant to protect his patrons and went outside to try to stop the damage to his property. Mr. Miah pushes several of the teenagers away from his windows.
The police show up. Mr. Miah tries to explain what happened. The gang claims that Mr. Miah punched several of them.
The police arrest Mr. Miah.
The married father-of-five spent five hours in a police cell and had his DNA, fingerprints and police mugshot taken.
As officers put him in the back of a patrol car, he said the laughing yobs hurled abuse and mocked him with shouts of ‘You’re nicked’. Mr Miah, who has no previous convictions, said: ‘I could not believe it.
Frankly, I can’t believe it either. The whole thing seems like a scenario that some Texans would solve nicely. Maybe we can send a few over there to show the UK how it’s done.
There are a number of questions that people are asking. Good questions. Questions like, “If the UK has so many cameras focused on the streets, can’t they just look at the cameras to see what happened?” Questions like, “Why don’t the local cops know who the local troublemakers are and who the people who are just trying to make a business work are?”
In my eyes the only question is – how far will civilized Western society go before we decide to push back against the elements that seem to enjoy running amok?

That is bloody depressing. There is something seriously wrong when the store owner and staff call to report a burgulary but the cops listen to a bunch of yobs and their lies about assault?! I’d like to know how one is supposed to observe from a safe distance when they are breaking into your home or business, beating on the windows of your business? Are we supposed to run and hide in the loo until the scrawny losers tiny brains find some other form of entertainment?
Feh. Bad job Crowborough police. No bone for you.
What a shame that people can not protect their property and when they do they become the guilty party! Not only does this send the wrong message out to the community, it most certainly sends out the message to criminals to commit their crimes you are protected! We in Texas still do have some of the frontier justice mentality and if someone is caught attempting to steal or harm you woes be to them.
I do not know much about the laws in the U.K. but not having the right to bear arms is part of the problem. How can one defend themselves against several people?
A socialist Hellhole if you ask me.
Worse than you can imagine. It’s a place where PC is completle out of controll. A place where if you are muslim and you commit a crime you will be let out. Not all the time but about 60% of the time.
If you are a normal person who pays your taxes, goes to work and suddendly gets sick you will wait in long lines just to see a doctor. If you need surgery then the wait is long and painful.
I am in the UK about 4 times a year. I do NOT at any point feel safe. I am mostly in Brtstol but I do sometimes have to travel to London. I have been hasseled by little shitheads but when I tell them to leave me the hell alone they notice that I am an American and they leave me be.
I will have to politely disagree about the health care. Nowhere in the world is perfect (I assume you live in the States, where you have a whole different set of problems), but from my experience, NHS is definitely not as bad as it is portrayed to be.
How do you get to the conclusion that if you’re a Muslim and you commit a crime, they will let you walk? I’m really curious about that.
Many people here now believe there is a real agenda to destabilise UK society by wrecking the social contract between State and people. Is it to soften us up for an EU/worldwide Police state we’ll welcome as saviours or is it to provoke us out of our Godless complacency and make us a better society overall. Who knows why?
There are other cases around the world just like this. Some where property owners have been sued while a criminal was hurt in the process of robbing someone’s home or business. The real sad part is these teenage thugs got away with this and eventually will end doing something even worse and will get killed or worse yet kill an innocent person. Probably would be best for everyone if we just take these thugs out now and save civilization the trouble of having to deal with them later.
So many times drug-addict burglars and violent yobs get arrested and let off multiple times because society is meant to be kind and understanding but they fail to get the help or punishment they need and only when they commit some terrible murder do they finally get locked up for decades. Tough love is about getting them before they lose all of their moral bearings.
I just hate to see the day in America when we will no longer be legally able to protect our homes with firearms! The legal system is too goddamn busy coddling criminals!
I’m from texas I have no problem going to show them how handle it.
lol.
By the way those punks would never get away with that shit here in Texas. They just changed what is called the Castle laws, here.
Now we can shot to kill if they (the bad guys) are in our front yard after dark. So come on down to texas scum bags, You will get a bad case of lead poisoning if you mess around with us.
COME GET SOME!
I know in Texas, a person can shoot someone in the back if the intruder is on their property. I know that happened with Joe Horn.
That’s good old fucking England for you a country that has been twisted by political correctness and over zealous health and safety squads.
It really seems like no one in this country can do anything about the gangs of feral youths that roam the inner cities…….All the police seem to do is give Anti Social Behaviour Orders that restrict the places and times a person can go…….But they are almost never adhered to and have become something of a badge of honour among the youths.
As for protecting your own home it’s also a dicey subject with lot of people getting convicted of harming intruders if the courts deem the level of violence unnecessary
Take for example a case two months ago when a home invasion robbery ended with one of the perps getting his head smashed in with a cricket bat…..The home owner ended up getting prison even the though the robbers had tied his family up at knife point…..Because he had chased the men out of his house and the beating happened down the street the courts ruled that he was in no imminent danger and that the act was paramount to vigilante justice rather than self defence …….

But on the flip side if we had guns to protect our homes with it would also mean that the gangs of youths would also be packing and that would probably lead to some very bad scenes…….I thank god in fact that these kids are not armed with guns (even though they are known to carry knives).
Oh and Clockwork Orange is probably on the best books of all time it has a great sense of urgency and raises some issues that are still relevant to this day (in the early 80′s there were a few Clockwork Orange style skinhead gangs that all dressed in white and wore bowler hats…….which was nice to see….street gangs displaying some cinematic/theatrical aesthetic)
@Bill Baker
if my recollection is correct the law in Texas has pretty much always been “Intruder Invites a Bullet” and that anyone is legally fair game if they step on your property uninvited after nightfall.
bad news for the repoman.
this reminds me of several cases in Sacramento where I know some attorneys. basically, what determines if you will be prosecuted for defending yourself depends on if it is close to the DA being re-elected or not:
but here are some incidents:
#1- off duty cop shoots intruder while he is fleeing down the street- no prosecuion as cop stated he thought he saw a knife in the guys hand.
#2- witness sees men in car shoot someone in ass at Burger King and car chases vehicle- exiting a KMart parking lot witness pushes their vehicle from behind into oncoming traffic and the driveris killed- witness is prosecuted .
#3- victim holds two burglers at gunpoint with AK47 in driveway after catching them loading his property into back of truck- victim is prosecuted for unlawful arrest.
#4- victim kills guy stealing his car when he is fleeing in it blowing his ass away with a shotgun firing multiple times- no one prosecuted.
All in same county
#2 obviously should have been prosecuted. Shoving the criminal’s vehicle into traffic put a lot of people at risk of injury or death.
I’m moving to Texas.
me me me……I’ll even try and curl up in a suitcase :)
Part of the problem here in the USA is that we run on precident law – meaning many of our decisions are NOT based on the law, but rather how someone decided to apply the law. Liars – oops lawyers then argue about the relavance of past cases to the current case.
I am 6″2″ – if some 5’6″ punk comes into my house, is my 235 lb body considered excessive force?????????
I had a heart attack in Sept 2008 – am I technically disabled? is a crime against me now a hate crime?
There are too many veriables here under precident law and what it boils down to is how much I pay an attorney – sure there are laws, but are there precidents that override thise laws????
In a court room any where in the country whichever attorney puts on the best show wins. I can tell you this for sure if a burglar enters my house or business with the intent to commit robbery it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that there’s a good chance that if me or my family is at home they will do us harm. Regardless of this PC society and dirtbag lawyers I’ll take my chances with 12 jurors rather than 6 pallbearers carrying me out 10 toes up. If at all possible this burglar is going to end up on the wrong end of a Glock .40. Sure I’ll take the time to call 911 and all that good stuff if possible, but I doubt anyone is going to get there in time to save me. Or we can all just move to Texas with Steph-Ann and Bill Baker. Is everything really bigger in Texas?
Articles like this make me feel irresponsible for not owning a gun. I’ll get around to it.
OK I know I’m going to start something here and I don’t mean too, but by the sounds of it….are the yobos out the front of the store trying to cause a riot known to police? ie: their too scared to go near them? (gang type?) and was it easier to just take the owner in because I’m guessing he “didn’t look english”??? Don’t get me wrong I really am just asking a question or two and don’t want to start a racial debate, but it sounds awfully suss…yes??…no???
