Michael Frederick Schmidt And Tracy L. Schmidt
This is Michael Frederick Schmidt. He, along with his wife, Tracy L. Schmidt, hail from Hastings, Minnesota. This creep owns a spot in hell – he’s earned it.
His wife’s sister gave birth nine months ago to a beautiful baby girl, making Michael and his Missus a newly minted uncle and aunt.
His sister-in-law and her husband, fresh to the parenting game, must have been grateful to have the opportunity to avail themselves of the Schmidts’ offer to babysit their angel.
Ask any parent about the importance of making “couple time” and they’ll likely tell you that it is essential Dad and Mom remember that they were once husband and wife first before the pitter-patter of little feet.
Of course, finding a reliable and trustworthy babysitter isn’t an easy task, especially in today’s world. The news is full of horror stories. It’s enough to make you think of putting “couple time” on hold for eighteen years. And who is more trustworthy than people with whom you share a blood relationship and their spouses.
Those of us with large extended families are familiar with the practice of having our relatives look after our children – it is a way of developing relationships for us and for our children. It is a socialization process as well. The more exposure children have to new faces and new people (that we adults approve of and trust), then the better the chances are that our children will develop strong social skills.
As I said, relatives have an edge on strangers in terms of trust – we assume that those tied to us by blood will have our best interests at heart. By proxy, it is assumed that they will have our child’s best interests.
On April 24, 2010, the nine-month old infant was dropped off at the Schmidts’ abode around 3:00 p.m.. The new parents must have felt secure in leaving their little bundle of joy with the Schmidts.
Too bad they didn’t know of those skeletons rattling around the Schmidts’ collective closet like a Calypso band.
At some point in the evening, Michael Schmidt claimed that the girl “messed” her diaper and he had to change it. Unfortunately, he chose the couch to do the task. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her rolling off the couch. He grabbed for her tumbling form, but the diaper wipes had made her skin slippery, he said, and he believes that while trying to catch her, he must have cut her with his hangnail and caused a scratch which would not stop bleeding.
Michael Schmidt told his wife what happened and at around 10:00 p.m., they decided to take the baby to the local hospital, but first Tracy Schmidt called the father to let him know that his daughter needed stitches and that they were transporting her to the hospital.
To say Tracy Schmidt was economical with the details is an understatement.
The father and mother wasted no time in reaching the hospital.
Once there, the couple were told that a woman (identified as Tracy Schmidt) had arrived with a nine-month old female infant who had extensive vaginal and anal bleeding. The doctors and nurses were utterly shocked at the trauma the infant had sustained.
Due to the severity of her injuries, the doctors felt she needed surgery immediately, so they obtained the necessary permission from the parents and immediately sent the baby to St. Paul Children’s Hospital for surgery. She was transported via ambulance.
At the St. Paul location, the baby was whisked into surgery. Medical staff was outraged at the extent of the damage done to the tiny infant.
Fortunately, the surgeon was able to repair the tears made in her flesh and she will eventually heal. The baby has been released from the hospital into her parents care. She is recovering nicely despite the horrendous nature of the attack.
After he completed the necessary repairs, the surgeon pulled the father aside to tell him that his daughter’s injuries were the result of a brutal sexual assault and included:
“…superficial tears in her anal sphincter, and a tear which gaped widely at the girl’s perineum, and extended through the girl’s hymen, continuing the length of her vagina to her cervix…”
Both the father and the police were told that Michael Schmidt’s account of how she sustained the injures was “highly inconsistent” with the nature and extent of the girl’s injuries – internal and external injuries which added up, in the words of Hastings Police Chief Mike McMenomy, to a ”horrendous” rape.
And not, as so sworn by Michael Schmidt, the result of an errant hangnail.
Chief McMenomy said the attack itself was devastating to the whole department as it was one of the worst cases of sexual assault he had seen in over thirty years on the force – and without a doubt, the youngest victim he had ever encountered.
It is worth noting that when Tracy Schmidt brought the baby to the emergency room, she repeated the twaddle story Michael Schmidt gave regarding the injuries, but she had no more luck in being believed than her lying sack of shit husband did.
Interestingly, Michael Schmidt’s past includes several convictions indicating a pattern of violence that his in-laws were completely unaware of. He has convictions for the following items:
2002 interfering with a 911 call in Dakota County
2002 driving with a canceled license in Dakota County
1999 misdemeanour domestic assault in Dakota County
1995 child endangerment in Red Wing, Goodhue County
1994 fleeing a police officer in Hennepin County
Catch that one for child endangerment? That’s a whole lot interesting and grounds for Tracy Schmidt joining her hubby in the cell block She had to have known what he was doing. The baby’s screams would have been heard throughout the house.
See, back in 1994, Michael Schmidt was charged with an incident regarding an 8-month-old infant he was caring for. The little boy suffered extensive genital bruising and purple, swollen testicles. The boy had large bruises on his inner thighs. The doctors could not determine whether the child was sexually abused. Although the Goodhue prosecutor Carol Lee still thinks about the case, she said her priority was to make sure the boy was safe. The infant was sent away to live with a relative.
The domestic assault convictions involved his wife, Tracy Schmidt – at the time she was just his girlfriend – she was present during the times Michael was abusing the infants, but she refused to cooperate in 1994 and has refused to cooperate again in 2010. The two later married.
The 8-month-old infant was her baby boy and she is the aunt of the nine-month old baby girl. Seems to me Tracy Schmidt is an oxygen-thief and waste of space.
So it seems that once a pedophile, always a pedophile. Although, Michael Schmidt seems to be one notch worse than a pedophile as he has a predilection for infants, making his paraphilia technically nepiophilia (also known as infantophilia). It is when someone has a sexual preference for toddlers and infants, usually ranging from 0 to 3 years of age.

Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom is pushing for the longest possible sentence they can against Michael Schmidt. They have filed a motion to “enhance” the sentence based on key factors:
- vulnerability of the victim
- abuse of a position of trust
- multiple forms of penetration
- suspect’s prior crimes against children
- “particular cruelty”
Michael Frederick Schmidt was booked on charges of sexual assault and bond was set at $200,000 without conditions or $100,000 with conditions, including one that he have no contact with any children except for supervised visits with his own children. Yes, that’s right. This ass-hat has children – plural. I want to puke.
I cannot in any way fathom that any human being would be able to defend this piece of shit, but I’m sure he’s already had an offer or two.
As for his wife, well, I think she should be charged with something – obstruction of justice, contributing to the harm of an infant, failure to warn or inform of a predator, wearing white after Labour Day – anything! Tracy L. Schmidt is his enabler and actually helps him try to evade justice.
The baby girl will heal but one hopes she never again is subjected to her uncle’s perversions.
Schmidt has been remanded for a pre-trial hearing at 1:30 p.m. on November 24, 2010, in Dakota County District Court; currently he is residing in the Dakota County Jail.
Michael Frederick Schmidt is charged with criminal sexual conduct in the first degree (a felony), and, if convicted, Schmidt faces a maximum sentence of thirty years in prison and a $40,000 fine.
It is the least one can hope for.
The criminal complaint states that on or about April 24, 2010, in Dakota County, Minnesota, Michael Frederick Schmidt, engaged in sexual penetration with another person , the complainant is under 13 years of age and the accused is more than 36 months older than the complainant. Victim is 9 months old, perpetrator is 41 years old or 492 months old. Yep, I think he qualifies.

Back in the fiasco of 1994 and with the assistance of his future wife, many of the child abuse and child neglect charges were dropped. As a result, of the one year sentence he received for injuring Tracy Schmidt’s son, he served just fifteen days, with two years spent on probation.
The cover-up and support he has received from Tracy Schmidt is as valuable as money in the bank. When he abused her son, he was 26 years old. When he allegedly raped her sister’s baby, he was 41 years old. There is fifteen years of unknown activity that bears scrutiny. It is not that much of a stretch to assume that there were other actions taken that never came to light due to a perfect cover.
In the words of Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom, child abuse is rampant in our society today, and that in the United States alone, it is estimated that “one in four girls, and one in six boys, will be sexually abused by the time they reach 18.”
Sadly, as Backstrom also indicated, a large percentage of these abuse cases are never reported – for various reasons – shame, guilt, vilification of the victim, family pressures to keep quiet, fear of not being believed, fear of reprisals, and so on.
Cases like Michael Frederick Schmidt’s come to law enforcement’s attention due to the obvious nature and severity of the physical trauma. So in a way, our young victim was a martyr who gave up her body for a higher cause – that cause being the capture of Michael Schmidt.
The fact that people like Michael Frederick Schmidt get away with crimes against the most helpless among us is indeed sad and disturbing. It is only by recognizing abuse when it happens and going forward to prosecute these animals can we reduce the number of damaged adults these self-serving sick mutants create.
If we mean what we say, then it is time to give people like Michael Schmidt the recognition they so richly deserve.
One mother and father did not know what lurked in their own family circle and their little baby girl paid one hell of a price. Physically she will heal, but the trauma is likely to leave some imprint on her subconscious. As for her parents, it is unlikely this betrayal will ever be forgotten.
There are some things that can never be forgiven.
What happened on April 24, 2010 is one such event.

I just can’t wrap my mind around how some one could even conceive to do this sort of thing. It breaks my heart that things like this are happing. I think we need to go back to the Code of Hammurabi.
This solidifies my position of never leaving my daughter in the care of anyone but myself.
At times it is necessary, such as hospitalisation or serious illness of parent/s.
This story is horrible on so many levels and we can only assume the parents didn’t know of Tracy’s then boyfriend’s assault on Tracy’s son.
There are good child care workers still in the world, I promise.

It is a crap shoot, I agree. However, you can still find loving, caring, kind and gentle childcare providers- you just have to really really look and videotape (until you trust) and supervise and be super-careful. I have been a nanny for 6 years- with this family for almost five and I love these children like they were my own. I would lay my life down for them, without question, and you would have to tear me off of anyone that hurt or abused them the same way you would have to tear off their parents. These kids are lucky because they have THREE people that see them everyday and love them every minute of every hour.
I know cases like this make it difficult to trust people or want to leave your children with anyone beside yourself and your partner- but I promise, there are still good childcare providers out there!
I apologize if my comment made it seem as though I think you can’t trust anyone at all. Most people are good people. If they weren’t, society would be vastly different. Some people are born to care for children, and they have nothing evil in their hearts. This is all very unfair, though you can’t help but understand the paranoia.
I am not a parent. One of the MANY reasons is that I don’t want to have to make these kinds of decisions for real. I am a coward, but at least I’m aware of it! ;)
I am certain there are good child care workers… like vcbecky says, I’m not sure I’m willing to take that risk that someone may not be a good person at heart. If I don’t have to, why would I?
It just terrifies me every time I read one of these stories about children, BABIES, being in the care of others and being so horribly abused.
I agree with you about the fear of leaving your child in anyones care. I have a one year old daughter. I was very lucky, when I got pregnant my grandmother retired to care for my child. I could never put her in day care or a babysitter that I did not know. I only leave her with a small # of people and even then I am very vigilant for any injury or change to my child. I know that she does not understand but even now I have already begun telling her that her private parts are hers and no one can touch them!
I am a SAHM, and I am so grateful to have the opportunity to care for my daughter every day, and not have to fear for her safety. My husband, for some unknown, ridiculous reason, wants me to start putting her in day care for a ‘few hours a week’, to get her ‘socialized’ and to ‘give me a break from her’. I don’t get this, not only is it a waste of money (srsly) but why would I take that chance when I clearly don’t have to?
My family visits us from MT enough that I have plenty of chances to take those breaks. Even then, I’m usually a little wary about leaving her alone with others.
Did her sister not know the bitch gave up her own 8 month old son? Maybe she didn’t know the circumstances, but I’m sure she knew the kid existed. If a woman can’t bond with her own baby, I don’t want her watching mine. Sister or not.

This was mom’s sister. she had a child and was taken away..certainly boyfriend spent a night or two in jail and was charged. So exactly how did mom not know at least a smidgen of what happened seeing how she is obviously close enough to sis to allow her near her child?

I have some weird asses in my family and just because their related doesn’t mean I’m gonna hand over my kid to them..hell my mom made some dumb parenting tips that took her right off the sitter list.
My heart breaks for the parents but I have a feeling mom wanted to believe what ever her sister had feed her previously concerning her own child.
I trust my family explicitly with the care of my daughter. She adores them, and I know none of them would do anything to harm her. They also know I ask about every little mark on her, and I check every time I pick her up.
My husband and his family come from an area of the country where they don’t wait for police to handle the situations, and that they wouldn’t mind going to prison if they got to ‘take care’ of the monster who hurt a child like that.
I think that men who commit these horrible crimes against babies and children should be forced to wear a t-shirt describing their crimes around the prison. I doubt the guards would come and help him.

Reading stories like this sickens me to know end. As a child abuse survivor who still hasn’t seen justice done to this day, I have sworn to fight for, and to do whatever I can to protect those who are subjected to abuse like is shown here. This bleeding heart liberal believes in “Needed Killing” laws, but I do not condone torture or brutal punishments. I’m just not there. I think he should be raped with the wrong end of an angle grinder with a wire brush head, but I just think that when I know he shouldn’t be treated so inhumanely. In cases like this though, I think the death penalty is warranted, and that a simple shot to the back of the head is the right choice. I wouldn’t give him the firing squad option, it would be a triple layer 1 inch plywood(3 inches total) box fitted to his head with 3, 45 caliber, hollow point bullets and an electrical trigger(no gun required). He’d be asked to kneel which would start a timer, and 10 seconds later he’d be dead. He’d not have an open coffin, the wooden box and trigger could be burned with his corpse, and the state is out far less, especially in cleaning bills. 3 hollow point bullets would effectively disintegrate his head inside the confines of the box. There’d be no need for a doctor. It would simply be over and there’d be no take backs, no chance of foul up, and no gruesome electricity or botched chemicals. It wouldn’t be like a beheading, because there would simply not be a head anymore.
If it sounds like I’ve thought about this, I have. This would be a cheap, efficient and technically liberal minded way to execute a prisoner who needed killing.

I more or less agree with you on the choice thing, at least in regards to a person’s actions. I won’t condemn someone simply because they have negative urges or impulses, but I do hold them responsible if they act on those impulses.
That being said, I sure as hell wouldn’t leave a child alone with someone who I knew to be a pedophile, even if they’ve never given in to their urges, are adamant about continuing to resist them and have sought therapy to help them fight the impulses. There’s a fine line between cautious idealism and naive, head-in-the-clouds stupidity.

The fact that she went along with his story and refuses to cooperate is what bothers me the most; I know that there are a lot of stupid people out there and it’s not uncommon for one parent to be completely unaware that their partner is a child molester, but even a total moron wouldn’t buy into his lame explanation, particularly in light of the prior incident. I had the same question as a few others……. why in the world didn’t the sister know about her 8 month old nephew?
I have a sister that is 10 years younger than me, when I had back surgery my husband wanted to stay with me at the hospital. So I asked my sister to watch my 2 year old and 12 year old.
She was happy to do it. A day before my surgery date she came over and my husband and I was telling her everything she needed to know…..bedtimes, rules, where things were ect.
Anyway she had a fiance, and she asked where they should both sleep. She had assumed that I trusted him like I did her. To make a long story short I asked him to retrieve his police record from the police station. He laughed and I so NO I’m serious.
So he did and wasn’t mad or anything….however my sister was pissed! LOL! Until she had her own kids.
After her son was six months old she asked me to babysit. I was honored to do so, and she jokingly asked for my criminal background…we both laughed and she thanked me because she understood.
You can not be too careful when it’s your kids! And this Tracy woman was with this PERV for so many years I bet her sister never thought twice…..

I know he has a criminal past and has had violent episodes with my sister, and even tho i am fairly certain my sis would kill for my kids, i don’t know this guy (they got married in Feb and I didn’t go), and would never ever ever ever ever dream of letting them watch my two 5 year olds! NEVER. It’s incredibly sad to say, but it is true. I feel so bad for this poor baby girl and her parents, especially the mother. You would like to think that the one person in the world you could trust would be your own sister! If there is any good thing about this story it’s that the baby will not remember what happened to her. I wouldn’t be surprised if her injuries had last effects though — like, will she ever be able to have kids of her own? How does a man even FIT in there?

I have two children, a two year old daughter and a one year old son, and if any sick son of a bitch ever did that to either of my kids, I would take the law into my own hands. I’d be tempted to not alert police that way I could get to the fucker myself, kidnap them, and hide them in a basement for a while, torturing them until they died a horrible, painful death. I’m not even religious, but I just prayed that this poor baby is too young for this to ruin her life. Check the MN Dept of Corrections website in the next week or two. It was in local papers today – found guilty, though sentencing is not until November. He will be put away for at least 30 yrs. Why we have to feed him is beyond me.
