For most decent human beings, children are blessings. After having a child, you may find yourself drawn to other children around, and maybe even have some maternal instinct to want to protect them as your own. I know that’s what happened after I had my son.
I never really liked kids, but after having my own, I had this overwhelming feeling of compassion for all children. Stories about child abuse hit me especially hard after the birth of my son, and I know I am not the only one to feel that way.
Now, maybe this is a far stretch, but all good parents would not want any harm to come to a child, whether it be their own or someone else’s. Agreed?
Clifford Wallach, screen name “FOTOPHIX”, of Fort Meyers, Florida, does not agree. Or perhaps he doesn’t see 14 year old boys as children, but as mature young adults? Or maybe Mr. Wallach sees young teenagers as capable of agreeing to consensual sex with older men and that it’s impossible for a far older man to manipulate them into doing so?
One can only wonder what went on in Clifford Wallach’s head.
In November of 2007, Clifford Wallach lived a comfortable life, complete with a 5 year old son and a loving wife. But for whatever reason, Clifford thought it a good idea to loiter around in some chat rooms for underage users.
What would drive a married parent to do such a thing? Boredom, marriage troubles, being a sex addict? Who knows. Clifford Wallach’s judgment got considerably worse after finding a young “14 year old boy” to have sexually explicit internet and phone chats with.
Now, I put “14 year old boy” in quotations because on the other end of the computer and phone, there was not a high school freshman, but a grown adult member of Perverted Justice acting as a decoy in one of their infamous sting operations used to catch sexual predators.
Both the chat logs and phone conversations contained explicit conversation about 42 year old Wallach having sex with this 14 year old boy. And if Clifford Wallach’s judgment wasn’t bad enough there, he went through with meeting up at the “boy’s” house (which was really a trap house used for the sting operations, complete with cameras to track his every move).
Think Clifford’s lack of morals stopped there? Unfortunately, no, it only got worse. Chris Hansen of Dateline NBC (who hosts To Catch A Predator), Florida police and members of Perverted Justice all waited then watched as Wallach pulled up to the house. They all got in 
position for the sting when suddenly, something sickening and unexpected happened; Clifford Wallach opened the back door of his car to help out a small child, his son.
Perhaps I should spell this out so readers can understand the severity of the issue: This grown man brought HIS SON to a house where he was supposed to meet up and have SEX with another child!
Needless to say, the operation didn’t go as planned, and instead of Chris Hansen going over the chat log and embarrassing the BeJesus out of Mr. Wallace on national television, he was sent out of the house after claiming he was merely there to “take someone out to lunch.”
As he exited, police separated Wallach and his kindergarten son in a careful manner so as not to scare the little boy. Later Clifford Wallach was locked up and the boy’s mother was called to pick up their son.
Wallach thought that he’d go to trial and beat the charges. Wallach, like all predators who think that, was wrong. He hired a defense attorney who was scum enough to defend him and assumed he’d be the first of Perverted Justice’s Hall of Shamer who would be acquitted of the charges. Unfortunately for Wallach, that was only wishful thinking.
His defense attorney and his father, Joel Wallach, tried to make it clear that Clifford was a loving family man who only came to the house to “eat some cookies and take a new friend out to McDonald’s.” I’m sorry, but isn’t a strange old man just “innocently” taking a very young teenage boy out to lunch extremely creepy and wrong in most people’s books? So meeting up with that teenager to have sex with him is even more creepy and wrong, right?
The Judge in his case thought so, and after having his trial postponed, Clifford Wallach was convicted of 1 count of Child Abuse (for bringing his son) and 1 count of Attempted Lewd/Lascivious Act Upon a Child. His sentence fell between 33 months and 10 years in prison. Sadly, Clifford Wallach was only given 5 years. We can only hope he’s learned his lesson.

In case anyone is wondering about the little boy, he was taken from both of his parents’ custody, since his mother stood by her pedophile husband, and was sent to live with more responsible parents. I’m sure everyone who was involved with and has seen/read about Wallach’s capture is glad that Perverted Justice was there instead of a 14 year old boy home alone. God only knows what would have happened.

There are so many what-ifs and only very few ideas that would have kept the boy shielded from what would have happened. Luckily Clifford Wallach walked right into a trap and was put away before any physical harm could be done.

Hi, I found this article after watching the episode and wanted to know if Clifford Wallach was charged and found guilty. I agree totally with your statements here including, worrying about whether or not his own son was at risk for abuse and what would have happened if NBC wasn’t there. What I don’t agree with is the way you worded one simple sentence. “Wallach was clearly not straight and obviously favored too-young boys.” The fact that Wallach was an obvious pedophile has nothing to do with his sexuality. He is obviously straight, he has a wife. If he was gay, he’d have a husband or like sex with MEN, not little boys. A normal gay man does is not a pedophile or goes after little boys. I think you’re reading something into the story that the author wasn’t trying to say. The evidence that he was gay was that his interest was in males, young underage males.

Actually, VCBecky, in this instance you happen to be wrong. A person can be a pedophile and never touch a child, the same way a man can be gay and never have sex with another man. What matters is their thoughts and desires, not what they do. As to how many latent pedophiles there are out there, no one knows and I doubt any of them would own up to it in a survey.

Trying to study pedophilia at that angle is like trying to count the actual number of rapes or molestations with any degree of accuracy. Things go unreported, especially when they’re humiliating or they might cause a rift in a family. I cannot believe any statistics that show specific numbers or percentages when it comes to things that are painful or embarrassing to admit. I just can’t.
If I am biased, and I don’t feel that I am, I don’t think it’s an unfair or unsafe bias. I also don’t like anacondas in my living room. Sure, they’re not necessarily going to eat my cat, but they might. In fact, it’s more probable that they will than they won’t. The risk simply isn’t worth it.
I can’t really think of any other sexual analogy to use besides gayness, though I definitely agree that gayness and pedophilia are worlds apart. Allright, Gabby, I’m going to try to make this issue a little clearer for you. Basically, it’s simple.
Imagine you’re stuck in a traffic jam. You have a sick child in the car and you really need to get him/her to a doctor pronto. Your blood-pressure rises, you feel a throbbing ache in the back of your skull, and for every moan of pain that fills the car, your anger at all the fucking idiots who had to pick this fucking route at this exact fucking point in time, grows exponentially. In order to relieve the stress, you start to imagine what it would be like if you were driving a tank, and soon you can even – in your mind’s eye – see the cars in front of you exploding out of the way, pieces of car and driver flying everywhere, all the idiots in front of you sharing one single thought as their very being is ripped apart: “why, oh why, did I even try to slow Gabby down?”
This goes on until you reach the hospital. Then the anger at the idiots in traffic is replaced by worry, as a bunch of people dressed in white or green (or any neutral colour) grab your child and ask you to do nothing but wait. You hope they know what they are doing, you hope your kid will be allright, and you keep asking yourself if you could have done something differently in order for none of this to have happened. Your desire to kill everyone else on the road has disappeared like a fart in the Saharan desert, and the only thing you can think of is life.
This kind of behaviour is normal. Just because you imagined blowing people up does not make you a murderer. And for the purposes of making my point, the story above could end right there. But just in case you’re wondering, your kid is fine, and there was nothing you could have done differently. Okay?
Now, let’s have a contrasting story starring a paedophile.
Imagine he’s sitting on a park bench in a park near you. He’s looking at the cute little kids playing around. It’s summer, and he can’t help but notice all those exciting flashes of bare skin. He looks around to check if anyone’s paying him any attention, and slowly crosses his legs to hide the expanding bulge in his pants. There’s one girl in particular who catches his eye. She’s swinging back and forth on the swing, really throwing those cute little legs around, trying to get the swing to go as high as possible. She’s wearing a skirt, and for every inch of height gained, he can see deeper into what’s underneath.

A flash of pink underwear!
He tries not to stare, but it’s hard. He shifts his body again, his erection is fully extended, and mixed with the sweet sexual tension filling his body is the fear. He knows what he feels is wrong, he knows all these thoughts and desires filling his senses are wrong, yet at the same time… They’re all so right, so beautiful, so…
He turns his head, enough to make it seem as if he’s looking elsewhere, but his eyes are glued to that little girl. With every flash of underwear his heart beats faster and faster. He wishes he had a camera, wishes he could freeze this moment, and returns to a fantasy he’s had many, many times before, where he stops time so that everyone else but him and the object of his love (because that’s what it is, love, and how can love be wrong?) are stuck in the moment while they are free to explore their love.
Then a woman calls the girl’s name – oh god, this is perfect, now he has a name to fill out the fantasy – and after a minute or so of whining she slows down and jumps off the swing. He tries not to follow her with his gaze, but it’s not easy.
Then he gets the feeling someone is looking at him, and he curses the throbbing in his pants which prevents him from standing up. He knows he’s stretched his luck already and that he should leave, but this is the way it always goes. Fortunately he’s brought with him today’s newspaper, and once again he pretends to read it while waiting for his erection to subside. At the same time he looks around, but doesn’t notice anyone paying him any extra attention. Which is also the way it always goes, and which feeds his feeling of injustice. Why is he the one whose desires are deemed unnatural? Why does he have to hide his sexuality? Sex is a natural part of being a human, and in some parts of the world, this is an accepted truth about life. Why should he be the one to feel shame for something that’s perfectly natural?
The anger at the injustice of it all helps relieve the sexual tension, and soon he’s ready to get up and go home. On the subway he teases himself with thoughts of the little girl with the pink underwear, and as soon as he gets home he locks the door and takes out his private photo album. He keeps it well hidden as he knows what might happen if anyone ever found it, but it has saved him many times. This album – and the disguised files on his computer – are the only things keeping him sane.
He’s accepted his role as a martyr, an outcast, a sexual deviant, and keeps telling himself that as long as he sticks to masturbation, he’s not hurting anyone. As for the pictures he’s collected through the years, they’re anyway available to any- and everyone, so it’s not as if he, personally, is in any way responsible for the lives of the kids shown. Right?
One thought of what that cute little girl might have looked like beneath her pink underwear is enough for ejaculation, and he shudders with delight.
Yet something is missing, and he cannot help but wonder how the real thing would feel like.
Maybe one day society will come around to his way of thinking.
He can only hope.
Now, Gabby, do you see the difference? In the first example, the desire to kill is born in a flash, and died in a flash. It’s a simple survival mechanism, sometimes we need to ventilate. But in the latter example, the desire was there from the beginning, it was present throughout the length of the story, and it continued beyond the end of the story. And that’s the thing with matters of a sexual nature. You can’t just turn it off, you need to satisfy that hunger one way or another. If a paedophile is smart enough not to molest children himself, how do you think he satisfies his urges?

A good writer can put him or herself into the shoes of his or her characters and gain the insight necessary to ‘understand’ them. Homer was able to do that. It takes a lot of empathy and logic. Depending on the subject, it’s really difficult to maintain your emotional center while you do it. I think he did a fantastic job.
Leasha, first off, I am extremely glad you felt my fictional paedophile was a creepy bastard, because that was the whole point of the story. And the fact that my description of a paedophile matches your preconception of one is somewhat flattering, as it means that – in your case, at least – I hit the bullseye.
Still, I can’t help but bitch-slap you a little bit for implying this was something more than a story, as according to your logic, Jeff Lindsay must be a serial killer, since he has such a deep understanding of how a serial killer with a relatively functioning moral compass must think, and Stephen King must be an alien supernatural monster, as he has an inhuman understanding of how fear works. (Not that I am in any way comparing myself with said writers, I’m just making a point.) In case this didn’t clear up your confusion, please read Becky’s comment above. (Thank you, Becky, you rock!)
Secondly, in just about every single article or book regarding criminal human behaviour that I have ever read, the human capacity for self-delusion has come up. If a person really wants something, yet knows it’s wrong or morally reprehensible, he or she will find a way to justify that desire. Stealing isn’t stealing, because you convince yourself you’re one day going to pay it all back. Raping isn’t raping, because you’re only fulfilling the secret desires of all women. And lusting after children isn’t lust, it’s just “misunderstood love”, and as such, cannot be wrong as love is something beautiful.
It’s still just as wrong as ever. But, unfortunately, not in the eyes of the perpetrator. In order to illustrate this, and in order to keep you, the reader, inside the head of a paedophile, I used “love” instead of “lust”. Which is one reason why the story works as well as it does.

Many times these pedophiles are created from their own sexual abuse, they never learn boundaries, knowing the difference between right and wrong does not always fix or stop the individual.
This compulsion exists and despite how often it is sensationalized the fact is the MAJORITY never act on their compulsion but never receive the SERIOUS help they need because people(a lot of you) ostracise(sp?) instead of giving them a forum to actually receive help.
Saying that however i must also direct you to 4chan, much as I do NOT advocate this as an alternative there is a fetish called loli or something(like that famous movie) where DRAWN pictures depict the act, it is my understanding that one can not say there is no victimless release given that. However, please do not use it as an alternative.
Sexual compulsion is a VERY serious mental illness and often stems from VERY serious trauma that enables itself through a very very vicious cycle.
Saying that however I have two things; I dont give a rats ass about fantasy, I just don’t, but if your fantasy involves something that will bring harm to another seek HELP, do not be ashamed, it IS out there and you can learn to deal with the compulsion.
As for those of you who wish hatred and suffering on those who have done no harm, shame on you, I only hope you never feel ostracized and alone when you suffer with your own issues, I only hope you never feel the way some people feel when a whole society will turn their backs on you for seeking help and answers.
For those who feel like pedophiles or sexual compulsives are “waiting” shame on you, don’t band together those twisted monsters at PIE and NAMBLA with the rest of them.
As Dr. Drew put it: PLEASE seek help before you do something because with sexual compulsivity it is NOT something you should deal with alone. Period.

They’re scum because the majority of them will go to any lengths to protect their client, even if it means hurting the victim even more. The system is totally broken, but it wouldn’t be as bad as it is without unscrupulous, heartless attorneys.

Lady, I don’t know you but I can definitely say I think you have some pretty stupid opinions, in my opinion.
My mother is a criminal defense lawyer and has NEVER lied to get her client out of prison. If there is evidence that shows her client didn’t do it, then of course she will point that out in court. But she never slanders the victims in the case. Clearly, you either watch too much Nancy Grace or Law and Order. That or you’ve never actually sat in a court room to watch actual jury trials while they were happening and have no real idea of what happens.
YES, there are lawyers who do that and bring about a bad reputation. You’re enforcing a bad stereotype, because not every single lawyer is that way.
Also, would you believe any person who accused another of sexual assault? This might be hard to believe for you…but…*gasp*…not every person accusing another of a crime is telling the truth. Can you believe that?? People actually lie about this sort of thing! -_-

The majority of criminal defense attorney’s I’ve met *and that’s quite a few* are only interested in winning ‘the game’, as they see it, not in actual justice. They don’t care that their client is guilty, or that they might have the blood of their clients victims on their hands if they continue to defend their client. Of course there’s the rare attorney who has their heart and head in the right place, and it’s stupid to assume otherwise, or to assume that I meant otherwise.
I am aware of the criminals rights. I am also aware that many MANY attorneys will go to any lengths to see that their criminally guilty, bloodthirsty and monstrous client gets off without punishment. There is too much concern for the rights of the criminal, and not enough for protecting the rights and well-being of the victim.
Don’t lecture me about ‘rights’ and ‘fairness’. Most of the time, fairness has nothing to do with how the law is enforced. If you don’t realize that, you need to get out into the real world and actually see what is going on. Our legal system is broken, and no amount of lofty gushing about how people have RIGHTS and things must be FAIR will change that.
For the record, I don’t own a TV, I spent countless hours in court with my dad who was a single parent for a while and didn’t want to leave me with caretakers, and I am well aware of court procedure. I am also well aware that parents will lie to their kids about their profession, if they are ashamed of some aspect of it. Do you sit in on EVERY trial she’s on? You really are very naive.

One thing…as reprehensible as this guy’s actions were, he still had the right to adequate counsel, and calling his lawyer “scum” is over the top. The sick dude needed to serve time and have a close eye on him for the rest of his life but if America is still a free country we’ll always have somebody to defend people at trial.

Defense is one thing. Destruction of already damaged victims in order to defend someone who knows he is guilty, is quite another. I don’t think that’s what Due Process was intended to represent.

I used to love the show ‘To Catch A Predator’ with Chris Hansen. Not sure why they even took it off the air, to make time for silly bullshit that floods the networks these days. To me, this guy deserves more than hell. He is a sick, twisted, selfish bastard who doesn’t see the destruction he has caused to his family or if there was a real 14 year old boy on the other end of that computer. And what the hell was he going to do with his son in tow? Make him watch and/or participate? I shudder to think what would have really happened had Perverted Justice not intervened on this guy. while I’ll admit what he did was terrible, the one thing that bothers me is the comment made about his lawyer being scum. Having a lawyer when being accused of a crime is a basic right in America. No matter how terrible the crime is, you still have the right to a lawyer. Not every lawyer lies to try to get someone out of a lengthy prison sentence. it’s their job to look at the evidence from their client’s case and to get them a FAIR sentence. YOU may feel like he deserves 100 years in jail, but is that lawfully the right punishment? No.
My point is that regardless of the crime, it’s still their right. It’s also your right to say his lawyer is scum. But it’s also my right to say that I think he’s the scum, not his lawyer.
The attorney is scum for defending scum. People choose to be attorneys, darling. They are not forced into it. The law is not infallible, and many times the spirit is what should be followed, and not the letter of the law.

Claire, you’re overreacting, IMHO. Not every lawyer is scum, and I don’t think anyone has suggested that. I think the majority of lawyers on both sides are in it for the sake of justice, whether it’s justice for the victims or justice for the accused. But you know there are attorneys out there who believe in winning at all costs.
Vincent Brother’s defense team is a great example of that – they went so far as to threaten a witness to not come forward in order to try a last minute surprise alibi defense for their client. Brothers, who murdered his wife, three children and mother-in-law, claimed that he was in a car accident in Ohio at the time of the accident and could not have been at the scene of the crime in California. It turned out that his lawyers had found the actual driver of the car (which had hit a young boy on a bicycle) and warned him not to to talk to detectives checking out Brother’s story. Fortunately, the man was not intimidated, told the truth, and Vincent Brothers is now sitting on Death Row.
Do you think any mob lawyer EVER told the truth? How about the guy representing a bigtime drug king pin? These men sold there conscience and their morality for a big payday.
How about Dominic Barbera, the ambulance chaser who’s representing Diane Schuler’s husband Daniel and his family. He behaved so despicably in the early days after it was discovered that Diane was drunk and high when she drove her minivan the wrong way on the northbound lanes of the Taconic State Parkway in New York and slammed into an SUV, killing 4 children in her van and three men in the SUV, that he set a new low for how to handle a tragic mass murder committed by your client’s loved one. In spite of autopsy findings that showed her BAC at .19 and the discovery of 6 grams of unabsorbed vodka in her stomach. She drove drunk and killed much of the next generation of her family, including her own daughter and her brother’s three daughters, plus an father and son and family friend.

Actually, it is not bait nor entrapment. These sick pedos go online in order to find a girl who is UNDER the age of 16. They are not baiting them, they are simply catching the predator, hence the title of the show. Just like when someone murders someone, the cops will play along with the prime suspect until the suspect breaks down and confesses, generally out of frustration and confusion. So I suppose you think that’s entrapment and baiting as well?

Really, you have the skill to bring home the character without losing the reader. Just thinking about a pedo would put most people off, but there is something to be said for the skill to shut off your own personality in order to create the correct “feel” of another character, especially one so removed from your self.

I’m not defending him cause I hope he rots in jail but I did see the To Catch A Predator in which he was featured. He was there to have sex with a teenaged GIRL, not a boy as your article mentions & Hansen was sent out to tell him that b/c he had his kid with him that it was better for him to leave.
They also pointed out in the story that they didn’t know if he brought the kid so that he could abuse him or maybe to put him in another room with some cookies to watch TV while he did his bussiness.
My older sister dated Cliff in high school. For a whole year. No kidding. He was a well-off, spoiled, chubby boy, a show-off, and he had what seemed to me to be a too-close relationship with a younger teen boy. What he did was reprehensible. I am watching a rerun if the episode right now.
Oh, this happened in 2005, not 2007 as stated above. I can’t believe that skinnier guy is him. I had thought that was a mistake too. Yes, he will most likely go to hell.

Actually, To Catch A Predator still comes on Channel 23 MSNBC, on cable.
I have watched Clifford Wallach’s video several times and, there is never a time I watch it that I am not disgusted and very happy — happy that this little boy was not left to listen to, watch or participate in his father’s buggery.
I wonder if he participated in butt-fucking while he was married. Did his wife catch any diseases associated with the rectum or colon? Did he violate any children? We will never know. All we know for now is that his desire to bugger little kids is on public record.
