Have you ever met someone and within the first few moments of getting to know them you knew you would eventually read about them doing something heinous and disgusting? Some vibe about the person gave you the total impression that they have the capability of committing an evil act?
Meet Shanna Dawn Lanham and her pedophile piece of garbage boyfriend Jason Michael Wells. These two ensured that Shanna’s beautiful 2 year old Addison did not get to open presents under the tree this year, or have a 3rd birthday. Addison will never go to school, ride a bicycle or go to the prom. You see, Addison is dead. And no, she just didn’t die peacefully in her sleep, she died a slow agonizing death drug out for weeks , and was hidden from anyone to tried to stop her mother and new boyfriend from having their fun at Addison’s expense.
Miss Shanna was only 13 years old, but already a lifelong drug addiction to everything under the sun. While other teens thought they were so racy as to take a sip of a wine cooler, Shanna had moved from home by 14, and was snorting cocaine and in love with Ecstasy. By age 20 she was stripping to feed her habit and finding old men who would house her until she robbed them blind.
Then, back out into the streets she would go, looking for love, drugs, and a good time.
She gave birth to a little boy five years ago, but never took the child in as her own, according to court documents. A friend of the family picked up the drug-addicted baby from the hospital and later adopted him as her own.
Lanham was arrested several times on drug and larceny charges. She was branded a felon.
Out of jail and looking for love, she has a very short affair with another drug addict, Raymond May. She quickly gets pregnant with a beautiful daughter Addison. Raymond May, 36, is being held in the Central Prision in Raleigh, NC with a dozen beautiful convictions. The charges include promoting drug sales by a minor, trafficking heroin and conspiring to sell and deliver cocaine, according to arrest records. With Ray in jail, its time to look for a new boyfriend/dealer.
What does a drug addict mother to do all alone with a baby to raise? Get a sex offender boyfriend of course! This was a gem of a man named Jason Michael Wells. She was by his side when he stood trial for taking indecent liberties with a minor.
Wells eventually took a plea of sexual battery and was required to register as a sex offender. Wells inappropriately touched the 12-year-old girl on a chance encounter at a grocery store. Shanna stood by his side and called all the charges lies! The trial was under way when Wells agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge. But child molesters don’t do a very good job paying for Coke, so its back to stripping. Too bad for Shanna, working at strip clubs was not going to work for Shanna anymore-the drugs were ruining her appearance to the point where even the sleaziest club in town would not employ her. NOt even the nasty ones want the girls with the Meth scabs on their faces.
When Wells started coming around and the woman Shanna was living with learned that he was a registered sex offender, she told Lanham she didn’t want the man around her three children .Lanham decided to move out. She was urged to leave Addison with her, but the couple decided to take the little girl with them.
Homeless once again, the couple decide to move in a pay-by-the-week Hotel in Bessemer City, NC. Wells, took odd jobs roofing to pay the weekly hotel rent. Lanham was a “Stay At Motel Mom”.
As the drug abuse got worse, and it looked as if the baby wasn’t being fed. The child was no longer allowed to come out her hotel room. Not even employees had seen Addison for weeks. Family members begged for help. Even several members of the sex offender’s family stepped in , left several messages at the Gaston County Probation and Parole Department in early June, saying they had saw her abusing drugs.
Since the family never received a return phone call, they reached out to Shanna’s probation officer on Facebook, begging for help.On June 13, wrote “I don’t know if that baby is eating. Shanna is strung out on crack and Xanax. She is selling all her pills. Addison, her daughter, doesn’t have any clothes and I’m not sure she is eating. I called DSS on her and her cousin called the cops. Please help Addison.”
The social worker, who has stepped down from DSS because of investigation into Addison’s death, asked for proof. Lanham’s cousin, Stacey Drewery, said she called DSS twice in June and said she was fearful for Addison’s safety. She also said she called police several times.
“I actually called 911 and asked them what would happen if I took Addison out of the hotel room, and they said I could be cited for kidnapping, even though I knew she was being abused. And that’s gotta change,” Drewery said.
A complaint of neglect against Lanham was filed in June. The basis of the claim was because Wells, a convicted sex offender, was reportedly living with the Lanham’s in a hotel. The couple also smoked marijuana and did cocaine around the child, according to the report.
That claim dictated an in-home visit within 24 hours, according to Cheryl Harris, program administrator with Gaston DSS.
On June 9, two social workers visited Lanham at the Express Inn in Bessemer City where she and the child were living.
Lanham denied accusations that Wells was living there, but social workers saw men’s clothes and shoes in the room. Lanham said that the clothing belonged to her brother. The social workers reported “Addison to be appropriately dressed, clean and no apparent well-being issues were observed.”
Social workers told Lanham that Wells was not allowed to live with a child and that they planned to return in a week.
That second visit never happened.
In the weeks to follow, Lanham called DSS and said she and Addison were taking a trip to the beach. She refused to give phone numbers and addresses, saying her phone was broken and that she didn’t have the address of where she was staying. Social workers returned to the hotel where the Lanham’s had been living on two occasions. She had apparently moved out.
Wells told social workers in July that he and Lanham had broken up. Convicted of sexual battery in 2010, Wells was added to the sex offender registry and therefore isn’t legally permitted to live with children. Friends, family and prosecutors say that Lanham and Wells lied about living together.
Lanham told social workers during her June 9 interview that she knew about Wells’ criminal record, but that she didn’t know that meant he couldn’t be around her child. Lanham said that she didn’t believe Wells was guilty of the sex offense and that she planned to marry him right away.
Both Lanham and Wells continually told social workers during follow up phone calls that they were not living together, but police have determined that Wells was living with the Lanham’s.
Wells was babysitting Addison the night she died. Wells, tried wake little Addison up from a nap, but could not get her to stir. When the child wouldn’t wake up, Wells called Lanham who returned to the America’s Best Inn and Suites and ultimately called 911. Lanham called 911 that night from her room at America’s Best Hotel in Bessemer City, frantically describing the injuries on her unresponsive child’s body.
She repeatedly tried to explain away the cuts to the toddler’s private parts as injuries from falling in a bathtub. She would go from uncontrollable sobs to quickly and soberly defending her boyfriend and explaining away any signs of abuse of little Addison.

Addison died of sepsis, an infection that entered her blood stream and overtook her body. She had bruises on her arm and back and a several weeks old broken leg. She was swollen and covered in boils and had been sexually assaulted and sodomized. Her arm and back were bruised; her eyes swollen from infection. Little Addison was covered in boils stemming from MRSA all over her body. Some had burst, exposing her brain and skull. Her hair was falling out.
Again, she was 2 years old.
At trial, it was determined that Lanham and Wells made doctor’s appointments for Addison, but they decided to cancel them and borrow Tylenol from a neighbor in the hotel instead. Who knew Tylenol was such a wonder drug it could heal sepsis, a broken leg, sexual assault, sodomy, and hair loss!
Wells’ bags were packed and he was gone before police arrived. He was picked up a short time later at a nearby gas station and charged with failing to register as a sex offender.

Much of the account of the child’s death came not only from neighbors but from Lanham and Wells. Each of the defendants offered details and agreed to testify against the other. Funny how Shanna put her boyfriend above her child’s life, but not over her precious hide!
Shanna Lanham took a plea for second degree murder-only nine years to 11½ years in prison. Then she is free to breed and kill again.
Jason Wells was sentenced to 10 years to 13 years in prison. His conviction also includes baby-sitting for a child while being a sex offender. His attorney, Cindy Letorney, asked that Wells be kept separate from Addison’s biological father who is also incarcerated at Central Prison in Raleigh. Hopefully, someone will forget about the last part and make them roomies.

10 years is a long time, doesn’t make a real difference in the long run, though I agree that the time should’ve been longer. They’ll live with it the rest of their lives – I bet even McDonald’s wouldn’t hire them now if they ever get out, and making friends isn’t exactly easy when you have publicly viewable records saying you sodomize 2 year olds – they’ll be prisoners wherever they go and have to live in fear – prison would be more merciful, seeing as they’ll be kept out of the general population and fed every day off of taxpayer money.
In my country (UK) she’d have got a lot less -maybe 2 years served.
We all read these stories but the vast vast majority of people are normal. All that is asked in return is we be vigilant – make sure it isn’t happening next door.

I feel sad for Addison’s dad however he was obviously a low life, not paying child suport, and our government was paying for his daughter’s care and IS paying for HIS care. (I do not begrudge Addison getting what she needs from the government..Lord knows resources had to come from SOMEWHERE to take care of this sweet little girl while she was here) What’s really messed up is that I am sure daddy is treated a whole hell of a lot better in prison than his daughter was in the “free” world…With a mother like this I am surprised Addison even made it to her 1st birthday let alone her 2nd. RIP little angel. You are better off where you are!

Hate to break it to you but sterilization only stops sexual predators from using their genitals, most continue abusing with objects.
Sterilization has its place, as it keeps people from breeding and also provides a quick fix to those with aggression stemming from too much testosterone, but in cases like this doncha wish there was a Sex Offender Isle to ship them to?

Annie is right. Sterilization? Whatever drives these people is so foreign to any true human being that it’s difficult to accept; there is no boundary they won’t cross–no walls to keep them in or keep them out. Whatever motivates such atrocities is not of human origin and therefore is not sexual or emotional or physical. Animal or mineral? Neither. I knew a mother of a sexual predator who began at a young age (15) and amused himself by peeping into windows and silently observing another’s private moments. It wasn’t ‘playful’ or harmless–it began no innocently as his mother sighed. It was inhuman from the start and ended with sexual assault on women well beyond his mother’s age. There’s very little difference between rape of the elderly and rape of a child. Both are physically defenseless but a child’s boundaries are not yet developed because nothing in this world prepares a child or us for that matter for that level of evil ? of what does not belong in this world. And with an 85% recidivism rate, we truly need to explore other planets into another universe where unspeakable acts by unspeakable evil (non-humans) can co-exist and thoroughly destroy only each other. Not here. Never here.

That poor baby! That would be a good argument for the death penalty. I guess it’s a good thing they took the plea deal. They could have both gotten off simply by testifying against each other. That happened in Clear Lake, IA in 2000. Poor 2-year-old Shelby Duis was beaten to death by her mom and/or mom’s boyfriend. The boyfriend was aquitted on all charges and the mom was only found guilty of felony child endangerment. The jury stated that they created enought reasonable doubt by accusing the other. They couldn’t find them guilty of murder. Another case where DHS was called multiple times but didn’t do anything.
You know, I have the state Ombudsmen’s. Report on that case. I plan on doing a write up on it once my twin 2 1/2 year olds get a bit older…its so damn hard reading and then retelling all the details in such a horrid case when your own children are the exact same age as poor Shelby.
My mom has worked on the Treatment side of CPS in central and southern Iowa. Because of confidentiality laws, she couldn’t tell me much about cases, but what she could tell me was chilling. Back when Shelby was being abused, there were only 2 investigators for the 4 or 5 county area in northern Iowa. This was during what I call “The Big Meth Boom of the 90′s” and it hit the small towns worse than cities like Des Moines and Davenport. Tweekers+ children+ only two abuse investigators= the perfect storm that contributed to Shelbys death.
My mom had a chance to talk to a current Treatment side worker in northern Iowa a few years back. Jesse Wendelsdorf is still on meth and still shacking up with women who end up having their kids taken away. It burns me to no end that he is free when he obviously killed Shelby. Heidi Watkins was just too wrapped up in meth and Jesse’s penis to care about her kids. I’m glad she is paying for it in prison, but she didn’t kill her. Infact, her case is technically unsolved since noone has been convicted of Shelby’s murder
You know, I think I just seen a few months back, a police blotter about Heidi Watkins..if it wasn’t her, then I apologise, but I live in southeast Iowa…and I was reading through some of Henry county’s finest’s blogs, and there was this story about a meth head who stole a credit card and then later used it to purchase items that cost quite a bit…apparently she had broken into someone’s home while they were sleeping and a little boy seen her…I’m pretty sure her name was Heidi Watkins.
Shelby isn’t the only horrfic case in Iowa…I can’t remember when it happened, I was pretty young, about nine or eight when a registered sex offender kidnapped a five year old little girl, raped, and murdered her, and left her body in a corn field close to where we lived…My mother was so scared that we weren’t even allowed to play outside during the day time…guy wasn’t caught for a few days…but it just angers me that society isn’t doing enough to keep these sickos off the streets because more than likely, they will re-offend, and ruin someone else’s life…prevention is key, and if there isn’t enough room in the prisons, maybe Iowa should into bringing back the death penalty, along with a few other states…inhumane my ass…what those criminals did to get in prison was inhumane and most of them are lost causes…I personally feel that child molesters should be sentenced to death for their crimes, because they sentenced their victims to a lifetime of suffering…and pedophiles don’t care about their victims. However, Heidi is still in prison and I doubt she will be released anytime soon. Last picture I saw of her she put on a lot of weight (some of my friend who are in recovery from meth have the same problem).
Unlike this case, I have a feeling Heidi truely regrets the hell she put Shelby through. I feel that her charge and sentance were fair and just. I just wanna see Jesse Weldelsdorf held accountable for what he did :sexually abuse and kill a toddler.

Okay. Wells in Hell, or Wells as Raymond May’s cellmate? The latter is preferable for me, because at least living people might actually get to see little glimpses of his hell on earth.

Yay Lillith! Finally a punishment that fits the crime. I wish the edict against “cruel and unusual punishment” would not apply in cases where innocents have suffered through the torture and negligence that this poor little baby did.

Amen to that. I feel that if you’re low enough to be like these wastes of flesh, then you no longer classify as a human. A mammal perhaps, but something less than a lab rat. When you commit or permit atrocities of this nature, you should no longer be considered or treated as a human, and you certainly should not have the rights like a human being. especially to right to breath the same air as human beings.

Many people have failed this poor baby and are going to hell for it! And it is a damn shame when family members have to contact the damn social worker through FB to get her to get off her fat ass and help that goddamn baby! This poor little girl was fucked from the moment she arrived on this planet and it just makes me sick!

I’m a social worker and it’s stories like this that make it hard to stay in this profession. All social workers have huge caseloads, it’s a sad reality. And I don’t know if it’s different in the States (I’m Canadian) but up here all social workers need to see the kids on their caseloads once a month. I bust my ass every month to see all my kids, so do my coworkers. Because if we don’t submit the forms (that must be signed by the foster parent saying that yes, we actually did go into the house and see the children) then our Supervisor gets on us to do them. Concerned family should NEVER have to use facebook to get a hold of a social worker.
I know a few social workers, all of whom are overworked and underpaid, and wish they could quit but can’t bring themselves to do that to the children. They know that if they quit there’s a good chance the state won’t fill the position to save money, and the kids will suffer. Children’s safety is not a concern. Who cares if social workers have nearly a double load on their plates?
Thank you for what you do. I don’t think every social worker is lazy, but we only hear about the ones who are because of stories like this.

Yes, yes, I agree: why is it that NO oversight is given to impending parenthood and that the least fit among us (emotionally, financially, humanly) seem to be able to reproduce willy-nilly? And these wastes of skin always seem unable to realize that they are unfit for parenthood, or unwilling to give up their rights. Many, many people would have been willing to give Addison a loving home.

I had MRSA infected boils about almost 3 years ago. That poor little girl was in PAIN and was most likelyvery sick from the infection.
Yes, it must have been awful, especially since they had burst and exposed her skull. Poor little baby.
Actually, she probably felt some relief when the boils opened. The pressure of the infection and pus is gone.
Of course, she would’ve felt much better had these wastes of air took her to a hospital for a perscription of Cipro and a hygenic wound cleaning and packing.

I can’t believe how sick people can be. How can someone hurt an innocent child? This world has no justice. It’s like someone who robs a bank gets a longer sentence than the sick fuck who murders and rapes a child.
Their sentences are a sick joke. These people deserve life in prison to pay for their crime. When will courts take child abuse seriously?
Probably never. Most people are bleeding hearts until they can see and experience the world for what it is, and these judges and lawmakers are more concerned with jail crowding and criminals “rights”.
I still think we could solve everyone’s problems if we just dropped all of these murderers and pedophiles off in a remote part of Siberia, let them take care of each other, and then let God sort out the pieces….
The 911 call is the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever listened to. Shanna pleading that Addison, “her baby” and “her world” is ok and that she doesn’t know what’s wrong, listening to Addison moan and gasp for air – yet, she’s STILL LYING TO THE OPERATOR. She FELL? And “split her bottom”? You COVER for your POS, kid toucher boyfriend??? What a depraved, sick, piece of shit. I’m so nauseous.
Did any of them get charged with the Sodomy that was inflicted on this poor child or were the pieces of crap able to plea bargain that as well. 10 years is nothing, is that all that child’s life was worth a Poxy Ten years. They should be serving life sentence’s. In england they don.t have things like plea bargaining, your either charged with a crime or not. Wow, and thanks. Name-calling really fixed the atrocious writing of the article, congratulations. It really isn’t a lot to ask that an article be written in a readable manner. I’m sure any amateur writer, anywhere, could get a buddy (or fellow writer) to proofread a short write-up. Grammar and spelling, who cares, no one’s asking for perfection, but the narrative and sequence of it are a mess, to put it very nicely. Context matters to frame the events; are you saying this is not the case? What happened first, second, etc., makes a difference. For example, from the article, I have to just ASSUME that the sexual charge relating to his encounter with a 12 year old was prior to his living with little Addi (it was oddly inserted into the middle of the story.) There are plenty more examples. I’m sorry, but it’s a very (very) bad write-up, and no amount of condescension or name-calling will change that. And no amount of defending the writer as an amateur will make it more clear or readable or do better justice to little Addi’s hell on earth.
Wow. While this is a clearly heart-breaking and tragic case, this is one of the worst write-ups I have ever seen. It is so disjoint in narrative, and sequence as to be nearly incomprehensible. I feel little Addi deserved better than this, by far.

Have you seen some of the other crime blogs out there? This is one of the better ones in terms of proofreading. I am one of those who almost always notices errors ( mainly because I am the defacto reader for my blind husband) and I know how hard it can be to pay attention when you see so many errors. The reason this blog was so awesome was because Max was awesome editor.
I really do hope Cleo and Jason take you up on your offer to proofread. I can’t see how it would hurt. If I had the time, I’d offer to do it.

Wow….I was just looking at an old story about a 19 year old kid in California who put his hand down the pants of a 5 year old girl and inserted his fingers in her. He was given 40 years by a judge after pleading guilty.
And then here we have North Carolina. Here we have FAR worse sexual abuse, broken bones, bruises, sores…horrid neglect resulting in DEATH and the maximum sentence was 13 years.
